Overview
OpenNI, short for Open Natural Interaction, was an industry-led, non-profit organization and open-source software project created to improve interoperability between natural user interface devices, applications, and middleware. Its work centered on a common software layer through which developers could access depth cameras, motion sensors, body-tracking systems, gesture-recognition tools, and related natural-interaction hardware without having to build an entirely different integration for every device. The initiative was established in November 2010, with its public website becoming available in December of that year. PrimeSense was one of its principal members and the company whose depth-sensing technology underpinned the reference design used in Microsoft's Kinect for Xbox 360. Other participants and partners included ASUS, Willow Garage, research institutions, middleware developers, and camera specialists. The combination of industry participation and open-source distribution gave OpenNI importance during the early expansion of depth sensing, motion tracking, and natural user interfaces beyond game consoles. OpenNI's central deliverable was a framework of open APIs, sometimes called the OpenNI SDK. The framework was designed to expose common capabilities across compatible hardware and software. Depending on the implementation and connected device, these capabilities included access to image and depth streams, voice and voice-command recognition, hand and gesture recognition, and body-motion or skeleton tracking. The project was closely associated with PrimeSense's software ecosystem. In December 2010, PrimeSense released open-source drivers and its NITE middleware for motion tracking. The framework also supported a wider ecosystem of natural-interaction devices, including the Kinect and ASUS's planned Wavi Xtion, as well as compatible third-party cameras. OpenNI's original organizational life ended after Apple acquired PrimeSense on November 24, 2013. The acquisition led to the discontinuation of the original OpenNI project and, ultimately, the announcement that OpenNI.org would close on April 23, 2014. Documentation, binaries, forums, and source materials were preserved by users and organizations that depended on the platform. The original organization and official project are therefore best treated as defunct, even though the technology continued to influence later open-source work. After the original shutdown, Occipital and other former PrimeSense partners maintained a fork of OpenNI 2. That fork was used primarily in connection with Occipital's Structure SDK and Structure products. This continuation preserved portions of the OpenNI 2 software ecosystem, but it did not restore the original OpenNI organization or its former official web presence. OpenNI's enduring significance lies less in a consumer-facing product line than in its role as an enabling software standard for an early generation of depth sensing, natural user interfaces, and 3D interaction development.

OpenNI emerged during the rapid expansion of depth sensing and natural user interfaces in the early 2010s.
