Overview

NVIDIA is an American fabless semiconductor and computing-platform company headquartered in Santa Clara, California. It designs graphics processing units, central processing units, systems-on-chip, networking processors, application programming interfaces and complete computing systems for gaming, professional visualization, data science, high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, robotics, automotive applications and edge computing. Founded on April 5, 1993, by Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem, the company initially pursued specialized three-dimensional graphics processing for personal computers. Its early strategy treated video games as a demanding commercial application capable of funding advanced graphics research. The first product, NV1, struggled because its quadrilateral-based design did not align with Microsoft DirectX's adoption of triangle primitives, but NVIDIA recovered through subsequent graphics architectures and the GeForce product family. NVIDIA popularized the term GPU in 1999 with the GeForce 256, which integrated transformation and lighting functions into consumer graphics hardware. The company later expanded through contracts and partnerships involving Microsoft Xbox, Sony PlayStation 3 and other platforms. Acquisitions including 3dfx's intellectual property, MediaQ, Ageia and related technology broadened its graphics, mobile and physics capabilities. A decisive strategic change came with CUDA, introduced in 2006. CUDA allowed developers to use NVIDIA GPUs for general-purpose parallel computing rather than limiting them to graphics. This investment created a software and developer ecosystem that later became central to scientific computing, machine learning and generative AI. The 2012 AlexNet result, in which a deep-learning system was trained using NVIDIA GPUs, helped demonstrate the value of GPU acceleration for modern neural networks. NVIDIA subsequently repositioned itself as a full-stack accelerated-computing company. Its portfolio now spans GeForce consumer GPUs, RTX professional graphics, data-center accelerators, Grace CPUs, DGX systems, networking products from the Mellanox acquisition, Jetson edge-computing modules, CUDA libraries, AI Enterprise software, NIM inference software and Omniverse simulation tools. The company also develops platforms for autonomous vehicles, industrial digital twins, robotics and scientific research. The 2020 acquisition of Mellanox strengthened NVIDIA's position in high-performance networking and interconnects, allowing it to offer more integrated data-center architectures. The proposed 2020 acquisition of Arm was abandoned after competition concerns in the United Kingdom and elsewhere. NVIDIA's Blackwell platform, announced in 2024, combined new GPUs with networking, interconnect and software components for large-scale AI training and inference. Blackwell subsequently reached consumer PCs through the GeForce RTX 50 series. NVIDIA's competitive position rests not only on silicon performance but also on CUDA compatibility, libraries, developer tools, networking, systems integration and relationships with cloud providers, enterprises and AI laboratories.

History

NVIDIA was established on April 5, 1993, by Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem. The founders believed that specialized three-dimensional graphics processing could address computational problems that general-purpose processors handled inefficiently, while video games could provide a large commercial market. The company began in Silicon Valley with a small amount of founder capital and later obtained venture funding. Its first graphics product, NV1, used quadrilateral primitives and failed to achieve broad market traction after Microsoft DirectX standardized on triangles. NVIDIA survived the setback by developing new architectures and concentrating on compatible, high-performance 3D graphics. The company became a major supplier to the PC graphics market and secured important console-related work, including graphics technology for Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's PlayStation 3. In 1999, NVIDIA introduced the GeForce 256 and marketed it as a graphics processing unit. The product integrated transformation and lighting functions, helping establish the GPU as a distinct form of programmable computing hardware. NVIDIA went public in January 1999 and expanded through technology acquisitions. Its purchase of 3dfx's intellectual property in the early 2000s strengthened its graphics capabilities, while later acquisitions added mobile, physics and display technologies. NVIDIA's most consequential long-term investment was CUDA, announced in 2006. CUDA supplied a programming model, compiler support, libraries and development tools that enabled GPUs to run general-purpose parallel workloads. Although the initial commercial identity remained strongly associated with gaming, CUDA created foundations for scientific computing and machine learning. The 2012 AlexNet breakthrough demonstrated that NVIDIA GPUs could accelerate deep neural-network training and became a major turning point in the company's business strategy. During the 2010s, NVIDIA expanded into professional visualization, supercomputing, automotive computing, robotics and embedded systems. Jetson addressed edge AI and robotics, while the company developed data-center accelerators, DGX systems and software for enterprise and research users. NVIDIA also promoted Omniverse for three-dimensional collaboration, simulation and digital-twin applications. The acquisition of Mellanox, announced in 2019 and completed in 2020, added InfiniBand, Ethernet and other high-speed networking technologies. This supported NVIDIA's transition from a component supplier to an integrated data-center platform company. NVIDIA announced a proposed acquisition of Arm from SoftBank in 2020, but the deal encountered competition concerns and was not completed. The generative-AI expansion of the 2020s made NVIDIA's data-center GPUs, networking products and software central to many AI infrastructure deployments. The Hopper generation included the H100 and H200 accelerators. In 2024, NVIDIA announced Blackwell, a platform combining GPU, interconnect, networking and software capabilities for large-model training and inference. Blackwell was later extended to consumer PCs through GeForce RTX 50 products. NVIDIA continues to develop accelerated-computing platforms for cloud providers, enterprises, laboratories, supercomputers, vehicles, robots and other physical-AI applications.
