Overview

Ageia was an American semiconductor and software company focused on real-time physics simulation for video games. Its best-known product was the PhysX physics processing unit, or PPU, a dedicated processor intended to accelerate calculations such as rigid-body dynamics, collisions, cloth and particle effects. Ageia also developed the PhysX software development kit, which provided a physics simulation framework for games and other interactive applications. The company introduced the PhysX PPU in 2006 and promoted it through expansion cards and software partnerships. As general-purpose graphics processors gained increasingly powerful parallel-computing capabilities, the market for discrete physics accelerators became more difficult to sustain. NVIDIA announced its acquisition of Ageia in 2008. After the acquisition, Ageia’s PhysX technology and software assets were incorporated into NVIDIA’s developer and hardware ecosystem. The Ageia brand and standalone operations subsequently disappeared, while the PhysX name and technology continued to be used in selected NVIDIA products, development tools and games.

History

Ageia was founded in 2002 with a focus on dedicated hardware and software for physics computation in real-time interactive applications. Its central premise was that increasingly complex video games would create substantial physics workloads that could not easily be handled alongside game logic, artificial intelligence and rendering tasks by a conventional CPU. The company therefore developed PhysX as a combination of a dedicated processor and a software development framework.\n\nIn 2006, Ageia introduced the PhysX physics processor and worked with hardware manufacturers on compatible PCI and PCI Express expansion cards. The product targeted the high-end PC gaming market and was intended to accelerate effects including collisions, rigid bodies, cloth and particles. Ageia also promoted the PhysX SDK to game developers, allowing supported titles to implement hardware-accelerated physics effects. The additional cost of a discrete processor and the increasing general-purpose parallel-computing capability of graphics processors, however, limited the long-term prospects of a standalone physics card.\n\nIn February 2008, NVIDIA announced that it would acquire Ageia. After the transaction, Ageia’s PhysX software and related technology were integrated into NVIDIA’s ecosystem. NVIDIA subsequently extended PhysX across its GPUs, development tools and game-related technologies, rather than maintaining it solely as a separate physics processor. Ageia’s independent operations and brand presence subsequently ended, while PhysX continued as a technology associated with NVIDIA.
