Overview
Nilfisk is a Danish cleaning-equipment manufacturer serving industrial, commercial, professional, and consumer markets. The company traces its origins to 1906, when Peder Andersen Fisker and Hans Marius Nielsen established Fisker & Nielsen in Denmark. Its earliest activities centered on electrical motors and equipment used in products such as ventilators, kitchen elevators, and drilling machines. The company later became associated with the Nimbus motorcycle, but its long-term development was increasingly shaped by vacuum cleaners and other cleaning technologies. Over the course of the twentieth century, Fisker & Nielsen developed into a specialist supplier of cleaning equipment. In 1989, NKT Holding acquired the company. During the 1990s and 2000s, the business expanded through acquisitions and brand integration. These transactions included Advance Machine Company, Euroclean, Kent, CFM, Gerni, ALTO, Ecologica, United States Products, Viper, Hydramaster, Egholm, Plataforma, and Jungo. The expansion broadened Nilfisk's product portfolio across floor-care equipment, vacuum systems, pressure washers, outdoor and municipal equipment, and specialized cleaning applications. In 1998, Fisker & Nielsen's cleaning-equipment business adopted the name Nilfisk-Advance, reflecting the importance of the Advance acquisition and the company's increasingly international scope. The corporate brand was shortened to Nilfisk in 2015. Nilfisk's core business is professional cleaning equipment. Its portfolio includes industrial vacuum cleaners, commercial and industrial floor scrubbers, sweepers, combination machines, high-pressure washers, and specialized machines for demanding environments. The company also sells vacuum cleaners and pressure washers to household consumers in selected markets. Professional users include manufacturers, warehouses, retailers, transportation operators, facility-service companies, public institutions, hospitality businesses, and other organizations that require mechanized cleaning and dust or debris removal. The company operates through sales entities in dozens of countries and a dealer network serving more than 100 countries. Manufacturing has been associated with facilities in several countries, including Denmark, Hungary, Mexico, China, Italy, and the United States. Nilfisk has also invested in autonomous and connected cleaning technologies. Its autonomous floor-cleaning initiatives, including the SC50 platform, reflect the industry's shift toward labor-efficient machines, route automation, data collection, and more consistent cleaning outcomes. Nilfisk remained part of NKT Holding until it was separated in October 2017 and listed independently on Nasdaq Copenhagen. The company participates in the United Nations Global Compact. Its public positioning emphasizes professional performance, innovation, productivity, workplace safety, and more sustainable cleaning operations. The brand is primarily a business-to-business equipment provider, although consumer products remain part of its market offering.
History
Nilfisk began in Denmark in 1906 as Fisker & Nielsen, founded by Peder Andersen Fisker and Hans Marius Nielsen. The original business was not limited to cleaning equipment. It produced electrical motors and incorporated them into ventilators, kitchen elevators, drilling machines, and other machinery. The company also became connected with the Nimbus motorcycle, an important part of its early industrial history. Cleaning products gradually became central to the business. The company developed vacuum-cleaning equipment and built expertise in motors, suction, and mechanical systems that could be applied to professional environments. This specialization provided the foundation for the later Nilfisk brand and its expansion from household appliances into commercial and industrial cleaning machinery. A major ownership change occurred in 1989, when NKT Holding acquired Fisker & Nielsen. Under NKT, the cleaning-equipment operation pursued international expansion. In 1994, Nilfisk A/S acquired Advance Machine Company. The Advance business strengthened Nilfisk's position in professional floor care and helped shape the Nilfisk-Advance identity adopted in 1998. That year, Nilfisk-Advance also merged with Euroclean/Kent, adding further geographic reach and product capabilities. From 2000 through 2011, the company broadened its portfolio through a series of acquisitions. The businesses and brands associated with this expansion included CFM, Gerni, ALTO, Ecologica, United States Products, Viper, Hydramaster, Egholm, Plataforma, and Jungo. Collectively, these additions gave Nilfisk greater coverage in industrial vacuuming, pressure washing, floor maintenance, specialized extraction, outdoor cleaning, and related professional applications. The acquisition program helped establish Nilfisk-Advance as one of the larger global suppliers of professional cleaning equipment. In 2015, the company changed its name from Nilfisk-Advance to Nilfisk. The shorter name re-established the historic Nilfisk identity as the principal corporate and commercial brand. The business continued serving professional users while retaining consumer offerings such as vacuum cleaners and pressure washers in selected markets. Nilfisk's ownership structure changed again in 2017. NKT Holding separated the business, and Nilfisk was spun off in October of that year as an independently listed company on Nasdaq Copenhagen. This created a standalone public company focused on cleaning equipment rather than operating as a division within the broader NKT group. In the following years, automation became an increasingly visible part of Nilfisk's development strategy. The company worked with Thoro.ai in 2020, building on technology associated with Carnegie Robotics, to advance autonomous floor-cleaning capabilities. Products such as the SC50 autonomous scrubber reflect efforts to address labor shortages, improve cleaning consistency, and enable machines to operate with less direct intervention. Nilfisk has maintained a multinational operating structure, with sales entities in approximately 45 countries and dealers serving customers in more than 100 countries. Its manufacturing footprint has included locations in Europe, North America, Asia, and Latin America. In March 2022, a tornado outbreak destroyed the company's Springdale, Arkansas, plant, creating a significant operational disruption. Nilfisk remains an active Danish public company supplying professional, industrial, commercial, and consumer cleaning solutions and participating in the United Nations Global Compact.
