Nespresso
Premium coffee capsule and machine brand operated by Nestlé.
Last updated August 31, 2026
Overview
Nespresso is a premium portioned-coffee brand operated by the Nestlé Group. Its core proposition combines specially prepared coffee, single-use capsules, dedicated brewing machines, and a direct relationship with consumers through boutiques, online ordering, customer service, and membership-style engagement. The system is designed to produce a controlled serving of espresso or coffee by piercing a hermetically sealed capsule and forcing heated water through the ground coffee at high pressure. Nespresso capsules are primarily made from aluminium and are filled with roasted and ground coffee, with selected blends and limited editions offered over time. The concept originated inside Nestlé during the 1970s. Nestlé employee Eric Favre studied the preparation method used by a busy coffee bar in Rome and developed a capsule system intended to improve aeration and crema. Nestlé patented the system in 1976, but the early machines were technically complex and took roughly a decade to become commercially viable. Nespresso first tested the concept in Japan in 1986 and introduced it to consumers in Switzerland, France, Italy, and Japan during the same year. Initial adoption was limited. The business gained momentum in the 1990s under Jean-Paul Gaillard, who helped reposition the product from an office appliance to a premium consumer experience. His initiatives included the Le Club customer community, lower machine prices paired with relatively expensive capsules, broader machine manufacturing partnerships, and a stronger emphasis on exclusivity and service. Nespresso originally developed an integrated system in which its machines and capsules worked together. Manufacturing partnerships with companies including Turmix, Krups, Magimix, Alessi, Philips, Siemens, and De'Longhi expanded the availability of branded and licensed machines. The first Nespresso boutique opened in Paris in 2000, adding a physical retail channel to the company's earlier e-commerce-led model. The brand subsequently built an international boutique network and sells through digital channels and professional coffee distribution. The original system, now generally called Original or OriginalLine, focuses mainly on espresso and lungo servings. In 2014, Nespresso introduced VertuoLine in the United States and Canada to address demand for larger, more American-style cups. Vertuo uses a different capsule design, barcode recognition, and a spinning brewing method marketed as Centrifusion. It supports several serving sizes, from espresso to large coffee formats. The system later expanded into selected European, Australian, and Middle Eastern markets under the Vertuo name. Nespresso's premium positioning has depended not only on coffee and machinery but also on brand presentation, service, product design, celebrity advertising, and a controlled retail environment. George Clooney has been a prominent advertising figure since 2006, appearing in campaigns that often use humor and cinematic presentation to reinforce the brand's sophisticated image. Patent expirations beginning in the early 2010s enabled more compatible and refillable capsules, increasing competitive pressure. Nespresso has responded by emphasizing its coffee sourcing, capsule recycling, proprietary systems, retail experience, and brand community. In 2022 it became a certified B Corporation. Coffee is roasted, ground, and encapsulated at Nestlé facilities in Switzerland, including plants in Avenches, Orbe, and Romont, while the finished systems are sold internationally.
History
Nespresso emerged from Nestlé's effort to industrialize the preparation of espresso in a consistent, convenient format. In 1975, Nestlé engineer Eric Favre examined a busy espresso bar near Rome's Pantheon. He observed that its operators repeatedly pumped the machine piston, a practice that increased the interaction of water and air with the coffee and contributed to crema. Favre applied this insight to a sealed coffee capsule and a brewing mechanism that could pierce the capsule and force pressurized hot water through it. Nestlé patented the system in 1976. The first prototypes required substantial machinery and were not immediately suitable for household use. After approximately a decade of technical development, Nespresso tested the concept in Japan in 1986 and introduced it in Switzerland, France, Italy, and Japan. Early commercial results were modest. During the 1990s, Jean-Paul Gaillard helped reshape the business by lowering the entry price of machines, increasing the relative value of capsules, creating the Le Club customer community, and presenting Nespresso as a luxury consumer brand rather than an office-equipment product. Nestlé also expanded machine availability through licensing and manufacturing relationships with established appliance companies. Nespresso initially operated heavily through direct and relationship-based channels. It later added boutiques, beginning with a Paris concept store in 2000, while retaining online ordering and customer service as important parts of the model. The boutique format gave the company a way to present coffee varieties, machines, accessories, and brand imagery in a controlled setting. Coffee production was concentrated in Switzerland, where Nespresso coffee is roasted, ground, and encapsulated at facilities including Avenches, Orbe, and Romont. The original system became widely associated with small espresso and lungo servings. To address North American demand for larger cups, Nespresso launched VertuoLine in the United States and Canada in 2014. Vertuo uses a distinct capsule format, barcode-based brewing parameters, and centrifugal spinning of the capsule during extraction. It offers multiple serving sizes and was subsequently introduced in additional markets, including France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, and selected Middle Eastern countries. Nespresso's original patents helped protect the integrated machine-and-capsule model, but patents began expiring from 2012 onward. Compatible capsule manufacturers, refillable products, and competing branded systems consequently became more visible. The company increasingly relied on coffee quality, design, service, boutiques, sustainability programs, and advertising to defend its premium position. George Clooney became a recurring global advertising ambassador from 2006, with later campaigns pairing him with other actors. Nespresso also developed the AAA Sustainable Quality Program for coffee sourcing and capsule-recycling initiatives. In 2022, it became a certified B Corporation, adding an externally assessed social and environmental framework to its corporate commitments. The business remains an operating unit of Nestlé and sells consumer and professional coffee systems internationally.

Products and positioning
Premium, design-led, convenient coffee experience combining curated coffee, dedicated machines, capsule consistency, hospitality-style service, and sustainability initiatives.
Original systemCoffee capsules and machines1986
The Original system is Nespresso's traditional capsule platform for espresso and lungo preparation. Capsules generally contain a single serving of roasted and ground coffee in an aluminium body. Dedicated machines pierce the capsule and force hot water through it under pressure, producing a concentrated coffee with crema. The platform includes compact household machines, higher-specification models, and milk-coffee variants manufactured or licensed through appliance partners.
Vertuo systemCoffee capsules and machines2014
Vertuo is a separate capsule and machine platform created initially for North American consumers seeking larger servings. Its capsules carry a machine-readable barcode that controls brewing parameters, while the machine spins the capsule during extraction using Nespresso's Centrifusion process. The system supports espresso, double espresso, gran lungo, mug, and larger coffee formats, depending on market and machine model.
Nespresso capsulesPortioned coffee1986
Nespresso sells a broad assortment of capsule coffees based on different origins, roast profiles, intensities, serving formats, and seasonal or limited-edition releases. Original capsules are commonly designed for espresso or lungo servings, while Vertuo capsules support a wider range of volumes. Nespresso capsules primarily use aluminium with an internal food-grade lining; compatible third-party capsules may use other materials.
Nespresso machinesCoffee machines1986
The machine range includes compact entry-level products and more elaborate models with automatic milk preparation and additional beverage controls. Machines have been sold under the Nespresso name and through licensed appliance partners such as Krups, Magimix, Philips, Siemens, Breville, and De'Longhi. Many models are manufactured by specialist original-equipment producers, while selected lines such as Lattissima are associated with De'Longhi production.
Professional systemProfessional coffee service
Nespresso offers a separate professional capsule and machine format for workplaces, hospitality businesses, restaurants, and other commercial environments. Professional pods are not interchangeable with consumer Original or Vertuo capsules. The offering extends the brand's portion-control and service model beyond the home while adapting equipment and formats to higher-use settings.
