Overview
MS Eurodam is a Signature-class cruise ship operated by Holland America Line. It entered service in 2008 as the 80th ship in Holland America's history and became the first vessel in the line's Signature class. The ship was built as a large premium-cruise vessel with design characteristics related to Holland America's Vista-class ships, while adding an extra deck and incorporating changes to the interior arrangement. At approximately 86,700 gross tons, Eurodam was designed to accommodate about 2,104 passengers and is slightly smaller than its newer Signature-class sister ship, MS Nieuw Amsterdam. Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands christened Eurodam in Rotterdam on 1 July 2008. The ship began its official maiden voyage from Copenhagen four days later, embarking on a 10-day itinerary. Its early deployment pattern reflected Holland America's broad international cruise program: Eurodam operated in the Mediterranean and Western Europe during part of the spring, visited the Baltic, Norway and the British Isles during the summer, and sailed to Canada and New England in the autumn. During the winter season, the ship alternated between eastern and western Caribbean itineraries. From 2017, Eurodam adopted a more regular seasonal pattern, sailing Alaska's Inside Passage from Seattle during the northern-hemisphere summer and operating Caribbean cruises from Fort Lauderdale during the winter. The ship has also been scheduled for repositioning voyages and itineraries covering Mexico, Hawaii and French Polynesia. Its deployment has therefore combined regional repeat cruising with longer repositioning and destination-focused voyages. The vessel's onboard proposition combines traditional Holland America dining and cultural design with entertainment and wellness facilities. It has five principal dining venues, including Pinnacle Grill, which has operated in partnership with Le Cirque. The atrium was designed by Vincent Jansen, and the ship's public areas include reproductions associated with major Dutch artists. Its main theater seats approximately 890 people. The ship also has dynamic-positioning capability supported by three bow thrusters and two aft Azipod propulsion units. Six diesel generators provide total electrical-generation capacity of about 64 megawatts. Eurodam has undergone several major dry-dock periods. It received its first refit in Freeport, Bahamas, in April 2011. A further 14-day dry dock took place in December 2015, and the ship returned to service after another Freeport dry dock in March 2023. The vessel has also been used for branded partnership programming. In July 2017, Oprah Winfrey launched Holland America's inaugural Share the Adventure cruise aboard Eurodam in collaboration with O, The Oprah Magazine. The program included meditation, tai chi, healthy-cooking demonstrations and an onboard book-club format. The ship's operational reputation was reinforced by a United States Public Health inspection result in January 2017, when it received a score of 100 for the 11th consecutive inspection. Eurodam remains part of Holland America Line's active fleet and represents the line's premium, destination-oriented cruise offering rather than a separately incorporated consumer brand.
History
MS Eurodam was developed for Holland America Line as the first ship in the company's Signature class. The class was positioned between the line's established Vista-class ships and larger future vessels, retaining recognizable Holland America design elements while adding capacity, a further deck and revised public-space arrangements. At roughly 86,700 gross tons and with accommodation for approximately 2,104 passengers, Eurodam was built as a premium ocean-going cruise ship rather than as a mass-market mega-ship. Eurodam entered Holland America service in 2008. Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands performed the christening ceremony in Rotterdam on 1 July, an event that emphasized the company's Dutch heritage. The ship then began its official maiden voyage from Copenhagen on 5 July, sailing a 10-day itinerary. Its initial service plan covered several European cruise regions. In spring, Eurodam operated in the Mediterranean and Western Europe; through the summer, it visited the Baltic, Norway and the British Isles; and in September and October it operated voyages to Canada and New England. From late autumn through early spring, the vessel alternated between eastern and western Caribbean cruises. The ship's propulsion and maneuvering systems were designed for operation across varied cruise regions. Eurodam has dynamic-positioning capability using three bow thrusters rated at approximately 1.9 megawatts each and two aft-mounted Azipod units rated at approximately 17.6 megawatts each. Six diesel generators provide reported total electrical-generation capacity of 64 megawatts. Its public areas include five dining rooms, Pinnacle Grill, a large atrium featuring work designed by Vincent Jansen, displays and reproductions connected with Dutch art, and a main theater seating about 890 guests. Eurodam's first reported dry dock after construction occurred at Freeport, Bahamas, in April 2011 and lasted ten days. The ship returned to the same region for a 14-day dry dock in December 2015. Beginning in 2017, its seasonal deployment changed toward a more consistent North American pattern: Alaska Inside Passage cruises operated from Seattle between May and September, while Caribbean itineraries generally departed from Fort Lauderdale between late October and early April. Planned repositioning also included service from San Diego and voyages to Mexico, Hawaii and French Polynesia. The ship became a platform for partnership-led programming in 2017, when Oprah Winfrey launched Holland America's Share the Adventure cruise aboard Eurodam in collaboration with O, The Oprah Magazine. The program used the ship's leisure and enrichment facilities for wellness sessions, meditation, tai chi, book-club activities and cooking demonstrations. Eurodam also recorded a notable public-health compliance result: a United States Public Health inspection at Port Everglades in January 2017 produced a perfect score of 100, reported as the ship's 11th consecutive perfect inspection score. Eurodam later underwent another Freeport dry dock from 18 February to 4 March 2023. It remains an active Holland America Line vessel, with its identity tied to the operating line's premium service, destination variety, Dutch-influenced design and onboard cultural and culinary programming.
