Overview
AIDAnova is a cruise ship operated by AIDA Cruises, the German-market cruise brand within Carnival Corporation & plc. Constructed by Meyer Werft at its Papenburg shipyard in Germany, the vessel was the first ship in AIDA Cruises' Excellence class and became one of the most visible early applications of liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion in the large-cruise sector. Rather than representing a standalone consumer company, AIDAnova is an individual ship whose name functions as a product and hospitality identity within AIDA's fleet. The vessel was ordered under contract from Carnival Corporation and built as part of a broader expansion of AIDA Cruises' capacity. Its principal technical distinction is a four-engine dual-fuel power plant capable of using LNG or conventional fuel oil. In normal LNG operation, the ship can run without relying exclusively on traditional marine fuel, while its dual-fuel configuration provides operational flexibility. AIDAnova can also connect to shore-side electricity in port, an arrangement commonly known as cold ironing, allowing its engines to be switched off when suitable port infrastructure is available. AIDAnova was launched on 21 August 2018 and delivered on 12 December 2018. The project encountered schedule pressure during construction and commissioning because the propulsion and engineering configuration was among the first of its scale. A small fire at the Meyer Werft shipyard and additional work associated with sea trials contributed to delays. In October 2018, AIDA announced that scheduled preview cruises would be cancelled. A further postponement was announced in November, moving the ship's operational debut beyond its initially planned early-December itinerary. The ship eventually began its maiden voyage on 19 December 2018, departing Santa Cruz de Tenerife for a seven-day cruise visiting the Canary Islands and Madeira. Its launch positioned AIDAnova as both a new flagship-scale vessel for AIDA Cruises and a public demonstration of LNG's role in cruise shipping. The ship was followed by its sister ship, AIDAcosma, which was delivered in December 2021, extending the Excellence-class concept within the AIDA fleet. AIDAnova has operated in several European cruise regions. By September 2019 it was sailing Mediterranean and Canary Islands itineraries. In 2022, the vessel was reported to be operating in Northern Europe, including regular calls at Nordfjordeid in Norway. Its route portfolio has therefore combined warm-weather island cruises with seasonal Northern European voyages. The ship's identity is closely associated with contemporary resort-style cruising, large-ship amenities, and the environmental positioning implied by LNG propulsion, although LNG remains a fossil fuel and does not eliminate all environmental impacts associated with cruise operations.
History
AIDAnova was developed for AIDA Cruises as the first ship in the cruise line's Excellence class. The project formed part of Carnival Corporation's broader fleet investment program and was intended to add a large, modern vessel to AIDA's European cruise offering. Meyer Werft built the ship at its Papenburg, Germany, facility under contract from Carnival Corporation. The ship's most important design feature was its LNG-capable propulsion system. AIDAnova uses four dual-fuel hybrid engines that can operate with liquefied natural gas or conventional fuel oil. This made the vessel the first cruise ship described as capable of operating completely on LNG. The design also includes the ability to connect to shore-side electrical power while in port. When compatible infrastructure is available, this cold-ironing capability allows the ship to shut down its onboard engines during port stays. AIDAnova was launched on 21 August 2018. The build and commissioning process subsequently experienced delays. Engineering the LNG system and related equipment at the scale required for a large cruise ship created additional technical and testing demands. A small fire occurred during construction at the shipyard, and the ship's sea-trial schedule was affected. In October 2018, AIDA cancelled the planned preview cruises. A second postponement followed in November, despite a plan for sea trials to begin on 16 November and for the remaining work to be completed by the end of that month. The vessel was finally delivered on 12 December 2018. Its maiden voyage began on 19 December from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, consisting of a seven-day cruise around the Canary Islands and Madeira. The debut brought the ship's LNG propulsion concept into regular passenger service and established AIDAnova as a prominent technology and fleet milestone for AIDA Cruises. Following its launch, AIDAnova operated across several European cruise markets. By September 2019, its routes included the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands. In 2022, the ship was reported to be sailing in Northern Europe, with Nordfjordeid in Norway included on every cruise in the relevant itinerary pattern. The vessel's sister ship, AIDAcosma, was delivered on 21 December 2021, continuing the Excellence-class design and LNG-capable fleet strategy. AIDAnova's historical importance lies in the combination of large-scale cruise accommodation and alternative marine fuel capability. Its LNG system was promoted as a way to reduce local air pollutants relative to conventional marine fuels, while its dual-fuel architecture retained the ability to use fuel oil when necessary. The ship should nevertheless be understood as a cruise vessel rather than an independent corporate brand, and its operations remain part of AIDA Cruises' wider commercial and fleet network.
