Corporate ownership changed around the brand over time. Morgan Construction Company became part of Siemens after Siemens acquired all of Morgan’s shares in 2008. History
MORGOIL Bearings developed within the engineering tradition of Morgan Construction Company, a manufacturer and service provider for rolling mills and associated handling equipment. Morgan had been building continuous two-high hot mills since 1888 for products including wire rod, merchant bars, small angles, skelp, sheet, bars, and billets. As rolling mills increased in speed, throughput, and operating load, the performance of roll-neck bearings became increasingly important. Existing bearing solutions could limit the development of faster and more powerful mills because they faced problems involving load capacity, heat, wear, friction, and service life. MORGOIL bearings were introduced in 1932 as a response to those constraints. The system used a fully enclosed journal-bearing arrangement operating on a continuous oil film. A precision sleeve, mounted on the tapered neck of a mill roll, rotates inside a fixed bushing held in a chock. The oil film generated by the rotating journal supports the load and separates the metal surfaces. This produces a bearing with high load capacity, low friction, comparatively low power consumption, high stiffness, and limited wear under correct operating conditions. The early design used a long keyed sleeve and a threaded-ring lock. Through the 1950s, this was the characteristic MORGOIL arrangement. The quick-change mechanical lock was later introduced to improve maintenance and changeover operations. In the late 1970s, short-key and keyless KL designs were developed to reduce roll-force variation and help mill operators achieve improved product quality. These changes illustrate that the brand’s development was not limited to the bearing’s load-carrying surfaces; the mounting and locking system was also treated as a critical part of mill performance. Hydraulic locking technology became another important stage in the product’s history. HB, or hydraulic-bayonet, locking was introduced in 1980 and provided a safer and more repeatable method of mounting and removing bearings. Later RM and CB systems continued this approach, using hydraulic functions to support installation and removal while adapting the locking arrangement to different mill and maintenance requirements. During the 1990s, Morgan Construction Company built a full-size, fully instrumented mill-bearing test stand. Research conducted from 1999 to 2001 examined the actual behavior of mill bearings and challenged the assumption that their performance could be described adequately by basic hydrodynamic theory alone. The research indicated that elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication was significant: small elastic deflections in the sleeve and bearing structure affected the shape of the pressure field, redistributed load, and produced a larger oil-film thickness than simpler calculations predicted. The results contributed to the MORGOIL KLX bearing, introduced in 2001. KLX used a thinner sleeve to increase the available radial load-bearing area within a similar physical envelope. Its axial assembly was also upgraded for the higher loads supported by the revised radial design. The concept combined material and geometric changes with a more accurate understanding of how the bearing behaves under operating load. Morgan’s corporate ownership subsequently changed. Siemens acquired 100 percent of Morgan Construction Company in 2008. In 2015, Primetals Technologies was established through the combination of Siemens VAI Metals Technologies and Mitsubishi Hitachi Metals Machinery.
