Metaswitch is a United Kingdom telecommunications software business whose roots extend to Data Connection Ltd, a company founded in 1981 by seven former IBM employees led by Ian Ferguson. The company initially worked in areas including IBM Systems Network Architecture and retail point-of-sale systems. During the 1990s, it shifted toward network-protocol software, building technical capabilities that later supported its move into carrier communications infrastructure. The Metaswitch brand was introduced in 2000. Its early focus was on softswitches and network-management systems that enabled telephone companies to move from traditional circuit-switched networks toward Voice over Internet Protocol while continuing to support legacy technologies. This positioned the business at the intersection of telecom equipment and software: rather than selling consumer communications services, Metaswitch supplied the platforms used by communications service providers to operate voice, signaling, mobile, and related network functions. By 2008, the Metaswitch division accounted for 78% of the parent company's revenue, reflecting the growing importance of the telecom software business. In 2009, Data Connection announced plans to bring its products and operations together under the Metaswitch name, organized around Carrier Systems and Network Protocol activities. The company adopted the corporate name Metaswitch Networks in October 2009 and formally changed its legal name from Data Connection Ltd to Metaswitch Networks Ltd in August 2011. Calico was later separated into an independent company, Tigera, with former Metaswitch networking executive Andy Randall becoming its chief executive. This represented a notable extension of Metaswitch's technology activity beyond traditional carrier voice systems. Microsoft completed its acquisition of Metaswitch Networks on 15 July 2020 after announcing a definitive agreement two months earlier. Most of the business subsequently became associated with Microsoft's Azure for Operators activities. Microsoft made substantial reductions in that business in June 2024. In December 2024, Alianza announced an agreement to acquire Metaswitch from Microsoft, and the transaction was completed on 4 March 2025. Metaswitch is therefore now part of Alianza, although its historical identity and product heritage remain associated with carrier-grade telecommunications software.

Calico was subsequently separated from Metaswitch and became the basis of Tigera, an independent startup led by Andy Randall, a former general manager of Metaswitch's Networking Business Unit. Microsoft announced a definitive agreement to acquire Metaswitch in May 2020 and completed the purchase on 15 July 2020. After the transaction, the business was integrated largely into Microsoft's Azure for Operators operations. Microsoft undertook major cuts in that area in June 2024. Alianza announced in December 2024 that it had agreed to purchase Metaswitch from Microsoft, and completed the transaction on 4 March 2025. Metaswitch is now owned by Alianza, while its historic product and engineering heritage continues as part of the broader carrier-software market.
