Overview
Metalloinvest Management Company LLC is a Russian mining and metallurgical group whose core business is the extraction and processing of iron ore and the production of iron and steel products. Founded in 1999, the company developed an integrated operating model that links mining assets, beneficiation and pelletizing facilities, direct-reduction and hot-briquetted-iron production, steelmaking, logistics, and related engineering activities. This structure enables Metalloinvest to control a substantial part of the value chain between iron-ore extraction and the manufacture of metallic feedstock and finished steel. The group’s mining division is centered on Lebedinsky GOK in Belgorod Oblast and Mikhailovsky GOK in Kursk Oblast. These assets produce iron ore and processed products, including concentrates and pellets. Its metallurgical division has included the Oskol Electrometallurgical Plant, known for electric-furnace steelmaking and products based on direct-reduced iron, as well as Ural Steel in Orenburg Oblast. Ural Steel was sold to the Zagorsky Pipe Plant in February 2022, reducing the group’s direct ownership of conventional steelmaking capacity while leaving its mining, ironmaking, and specialized metallurgical operations at the center of the business. Metalloinvest’s product portfolio is particularly associated with iron-ore pellets, direct-reduced iron, hot-briquetted iron, iron-ore concentrate, and steel products. These materials serve steelmakers and industrial customers that require consistent metallic input and lower-impurity iron units. The company also operates or has operated supporting businesses, including Metalloinvesttrans, which provides transportation and logistics services with an emphasis on rail operations, and ORMETO–YUMZ, an engineering and machinery enterprise in Orsk. The group acquired the Safisa events venue in 2022, an activity outside its traditional mining and metallurgy base. Metalloinvest is wholly owned by USM Holdings and forms part of the holding company’s Steel & Mining division. Alisher Usmanov has been identified as the principal beneficiary of USM Holdings, while historical ownership descriptions have also associated interests with structures linked to Andrei Skoch and Farhad Moshiri. The company remains privately held. Bloomberg reported in 2021 that Metalloinvest was considering a possible initial public offering, but no listing had occurred by 2025. The company is one of Russia’s significant iron-ore and steel producers. Its competitive position rests on the scale of its mining reserves and processing assets, its integrated production chain, and its emphasis on pellets and direct-reduced or hot-briquetted iron. Domestic competitors identified in reference material include Evraz and Novolipetsk Steel. Metalloinvest’s operations and corporate planning have also been shaped by ownership decisions, portfolio restructuring, leadership changes, and the sale of Ural Steel.
History
Metalloinvest was established in 1999 as a Russian mining and metallurgical company. Its development was based on combining major iron-ore extraction and processing assets with metallurgical facilities, allowing the group to participate in several stages of iron and steel production rather than operating solely as a mine owner or steelmaker. The company’s mining base consists principally of Lebedinsky GOK in Gubkin, Belgorod Oblast, and Mikhailovsky GOK in Zheleznogorsk, Kursk Oblast. Lebedinsky GOK is described as one of Russia’s largest iron-ore producers, while Mikhailovsky GOK adds a second major mining and processing center. The two operations supply iron-ore products for further processing and form the resource foundation of the group. Metalloinvest’s production chain includes extraction, beneficiation, pelletizing, and the preparation of iron units for steelmaking. The metallurgical side of the group has included the Oskol Electrometallurgical Plant, or OEMK, in Stary Oskol, Belgorod Oblast. OEMK is associated with a production route based on direct-reduced iron and electric steelmaking. This configuration supports the manufacture of direct-reduced iron, hot-briquetted iron, and steel products from the company’s own iron-ore feedstock. Metalloinvest also owned Ural Steel in Novotroitsk, Orenburg Oblast, but sold that operation to the Zagorsky Pipe Plant in February 2022. The transaction changed the composition of the metallurgical portfolio and left the group more concentrated on its iron-ore, pellet, direct-reduction, and remaining steel assets. Supporting businesses have extended the group beyond mines and furnaces. Metalloinvesttrans has handled transportation and logistics, including rail operations, which are important for moving ore and finished products across Russia. ORMETO–YUMZ in Orsk has represented an engineering and machinery capability connected with industrial production. In 2022, the group also acquired Safisa, an events venue, adding an asset outside its principal industrial activities. Metalloinvest is wholly owned by USM Holdings and belongs to the holding company’s USM Steel & Mining division. Historical descriptions of the corporate structure used several Cyprus-registered entities, including USM Steel & Mining Group Limited, Metalloinvest Limited, Seropaem Holdings Limited, and USM Investments Limited. Alisher Usmanov has been described as the principal beneficiary of USM Holdings, with historical interests also attributed to structures associated with Andrei Skoch and Farhad Moshiri. Leadership changed during the 2020s. Andrey Varichev, a long-serving chief executive, died on 27 April 2020 from complications related to bilateral pneumonia. Nazim Efendiev served as chief executive from 2020 until December 2023, when he became chairman of the board and Oleg Krestinin was appointed chief executive. Metalloinvest has remained privately held. A possible IPO was reportedly under evaluation in 2021, but the company had not become publicly listed by 2025. Its principal domestic competitors include Evraz and Novolipetsk Steel. The company’s overall identity remains that of a vertically integrated Russian iron-ore and metallurgical producer, with particular strength in pellets and direct-reduced or hot-briquetted iron.

Products and positioning
Vertically integrated producer focused on iron ore, high-value ironmaking feedstock, and steel
Iron-ore concentrateIron ore
Beneficiated iron ore produced from the group’s mining operations, principally Lebedinsky GOK and Mikhailovsky GOK. Concentrate is an intermediate ironmaking material used in pellet production and other metallurgical processes.
Iron-ore pelletsIronmaking feedstock
Agglomerated iron-ore products made for use as a consistent feedstock in direct-reduction and steelmaking processes. Pellets are one of Metalloinvest’s principal commercial products and reflect the company’s integration of mining and processing.
Direct-reduced ironDirect-reduced iron
Iron produced by removing oxygen from iron ore without melting it. Metalloinvest produces direct-reduced iron through its integrated mining and metallurgical operations, supplying metallic input for electric steelmaking.
Hot-briquetted ironIronmaking feedstock
A compacted form of direct-reduced iron designed for more efficient handling, storage, and transport. Hot-briquetted iron is a flagship product associated with Metalloinvest’s higher-value ironmaking portfolio.
