Metal Storm was an Australian defence-technology research and development company based in Brisbane. Its name referred both to the company and to the electronically controlled weapons technology developed around the inventions of Australian engineer J. Mike O'Dwyer. History
Metal Storm developed from J. Mike O'Dwyer’s work on electronically controlled superposed-load ammunition. Superposed loading places several projectiles in sequence within one barrel, with propellant charges between them. Although related principles had appeared in earlier firearms experiments, historical systems were generally impractical because of expense, complexity and the risk of unintended ignition. O'Dwyer’s early-1990s patents addressed the blow-by problem by using projectile deformation and pressure to create a seal inside the barrel. Later designs used skirted projectiles, in which the projectile structure helped contain the propellant and the nose of the following projectile provided a rear seal.
