Overview
Mercedes-Benz is a German luxury automotive brand operated principally through Mercedes-Benz AG, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz Group AG. It is the principal passenger-vehicle brand of Mercedes-Benz Group AG and one of the most recognizable names in the global premium automobile market. Based in Stuttgart, Germany, the brand traces its identity to the early development of the automobile by Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler, while the Mercedes-Benz name itself emerged from the combination of Daimler and Benz interests in the 1920s. Its corporate and technological ancestry reaches back to Carl Benz’s 1886 Patent-Motorwagen and to Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach’s early petrol-engine vehicles. The Mercedes name itself emerged from Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft’s 1901 Mercedes automobile, named after Mercédès Jellinek, the daughter of automobile entrepreneur and distributor Emil Jellinek. Daimler registered Mercedes as a trademark in 1902. The 1926 merger of Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft and Benz & Cie. created Daimler-Benz AG and established the three-pointed star as the central visual mark of the combined business. The present brand was created after the June 1926 merger of Benz & Cie. and Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft, which formed Daimler-Benz AG. The three-pointed-star marque became associated with engineering ambition, formal luxury, high-speed touring and, increasingly, occupant and vehicle safety. During the 1930s and the Second World War, Daimler-Benz produced both civilian vehicles and military equipment and used forced labour; that history remains an important part of the company’s institutional record. After the war, Mercedes-Benz rebuilt its passenger-car business and expanded internationally, developing a reputation for durable executive cars, grand touring models, buses and commercial vehicles. The brand sells a broad hierarchy of vehicles. Its core range includes compact cars, executive sedans, luxury sedans, station wagons, coupés, convertibles, and sport utility vehicles. The C-Class serves as a major entry point into the traditional sedan range, while the E-Class occupies the executive segment and the S-Class represents the flagship luxury sedan. SUV lines such as the GLC, GLE, and GLS extend the same hierarchy into higher-riding vehicles. The G-Class, with its distinctive boxy design and military-derived origins, has developed into a global luxury and lifestyle icon. Mercedes-Benz also operates specialized performance and ultra-luxury extensions through Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Maybach. The brand’s portfolio has traditionally covered compact cars, executive sedans, estate cars, coupes, convertibles, sports cars, luxury limousines and off-road vehicles. Important nameplates include the C-Class, E-Class and S-Class sedans; G-Class, GLA, GLB, GLC, GLE and GLS sport-utility vehicles; the SL and AMG GT sports-car families; and the Sprinter, Vito and Citan vans. Mercedes-AMG provides high-performance derivatives and dedicated performance vehicles, while Mercedes-Maybach occupies the ultra-luxury end of the range. The G-Class, introduced in 1979, has become one of the brand’s most recognizable products because of its boxy design, military-derived origins and off-road capability. Electrification is a central part of the brand's current product strategy. Vehicles carrying the EQ designation, including the EQC, EQA, EQB, EQE, and EQS, helped establish a dedicated electric range, while newer products increasingly integrate electric technology directly into established model families. The company has emphasized long-range battery vehicles, charging convenience, software, advanced driver-assistance systems, and digital cockpit technologies such as MBUX. The Concept CLA Class has been presented as an important indication of the next generation of Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles and technology architecture. Mercedes-Benz sells pure battery-electric vehicles under the EQ name, including the EQA, EQB, EQE, EQS and related SUVs, vans and high-performance versions, while continuing to sell combustion and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The company uses concept cars such as the VISION EQXX to demonstrate efficiency and long-distance electric driving technology. Digital interfaces, driver-assistance systems, connected services and software-defined vehicle platforms are increasingly important in the brand's product planning. Mercedes-Benz sells and manufactures in major global markets through wholly owned operations, joint ventures, contractual arrangements and local production. In China, Beijing Benz produces Mercedes-Benz vehicles with BAIC Group. The company also has a long-standing presence in the United States and numerous European and Asian markets. The Mercedes-Benz brand's heavy trucks and buses transferred to Daimler Truck when that business was separated from the former Daimler group at the end of 2021; the core operational focus of the Mercedes-Benz brand is now passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. Daimler AG was renamed Mercedes-Benz Group AG in February 2022. The brand's long-standing slogan is "The Best or Nothing" (唯有最好). Mercedes-Benz positions itself around luxury, engineering, safety, comfort, advanced technology, design, performance, and increasingly electric mobility. Mercedes-Benz positions itself around luxury, engineering, safety, innovation, design, and performance. Its communication frequently combines historical heritage with future-oriented technology, using the brand's long automotive history to support a premium price and a sense of continuity. The slogan “The Best or Nothing” has been strongly associated with this positioning, although campaigns have also sought to make the brand more contemporary, emotionally accessible, and relevant to younger customers. The brand reaches customers through a global network of dealers, direct digital channels, financial and mobility services, experiential marketing, motorsport, cultural partnerships, social media, and traditional advertising. It competes principally with BMW, Audi, Lexus, Porsche, Jaguar Land Rover, Tesla, and other premium and luxury manufacturers. Mercedes-Benz remains active internationally, but its corporate structure, model mix, electric-vehicle transition, and regional performance are managed by Mercedes-Benz Group AG rather than by a separately listed company called Mercedes.
History
Mercedes-Benz’s history combines two pioneering German engineering lineages. Carl Benz patented the Patent-Motorwagen in January 1886, generally regarded as the first practical automobile powered by an internal-combustion engine. Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach developed a separate petrol-engine vehicle tradition in the same period. Benz later introduced the Benz Velo, while Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft developed increasingly sophisticated automobiles for wealthy customers and sporting events. Carl Benz developed and patented a practical motor vehicle in the 1880s, while Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach pursued compact internal-combustion engines and motor vehicles through Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft. These parallel German engineering traditions became the historical foundations of the later brand. The Mercedes identity was established in 1901 when DMG marketed the Mercedes 35 hp, associated with Emil Jellinek and named for his daughter Mercédès. Jellinek promoted the cars among affluent European and American buyers and helped shape the brand’s commercial identity. The Mercedes name was associated with Daimler automobiles through Emil Jellinek, an important early customer and promoter who entered cars in competition under the name of his daughter, Mercedes Jellinek. The name gained commercial importance in the early twentieth century. Mercedes became a protected trademark in 1902. In 1909, Daimler introduced the three-pointed star, which later became the defining emblem of Mercedes-Benz. The star was intended to symbolize the use of Daimler engines on land, at sea, and in the air. The modern Mercedes-Benz name followed the 1926 merger of DMG and Benz & Cie. into Daimler-Benz AG. The new company adopted the Mercedes-Benz name and a combined star-and-laurel-ring emblem. The merger enabled the businesses to coordinate engineering, manufacturing, sales, and research during a period of economic pressure and industrial consolidation. Mercedes-Benz subsequently developed a reputation for technically advanced and relatively high-status vehicles, with the brand's model range expanding across passenger cars and commercial vehicles. The company expanded through luxury cars, racing, commercial vehicles, engines and buses. Its 770 model became prominent in the 1930s, including during Nazi rule. From the late 1930s, Daimler-Benz increasingly served Germany’s military economy, producing trucks and aircraft engines. During the Second World War, the company used forced labourers, prisoners of war and concentration-camp detainees. The company later acknowledged this history and contributed to compensation efforts. Postwar Mercedes-Benz rebuilt its passenger-car operations and developed a broad international distribution network. The 1950s and 1960s brought influential models such as the 300 SL and the 600 limousine, while the company expanded in North America through a distribution partnership with Studebaker. Its engineering reputation was reinforced by innovations in braking, restraint systems, vehicle dynamics and body construction. The S-Class became a recurring platform for introducing safety and comfort technologies that later spread through the wider industry. After the Second World War, Mercedes-Benz rebuilt its manufacturing base and progressively broadened its international presence. The company became particularly associated with robust engineering, occupant protection, long-distance comfort, and formal executive cars. The S-Class established a flagship role in the range, while smaller models allowed the company to compete in additional segments. The brand also developed a strong motorsport identity, including participation in Grand Prix racing, sports-car competition, touring cars, and later Formula One. The G-Class arrived in 1979 as a robust four-wheel-drive vehicle and subsequently became both a specialist off-road model and a luxury icon. Mercedes-Benz also developed a broad commercial-vehicle business, although heavy trucks and buses moved to Daimler Truck after the 2021 corporate separation. AMG, originally an independent performance engineering company, became majority owned by Mercedes-Benz in 1999 and was integrated into the group. Maybach was later revived as Mercedes-Maybach, a luxury sub-brand based on selected Mercedes-Benz vehicles. During the late twentieth century and early twenty-first century, Mercedes-Benz expanded beyond traditional sedans. The company introduced smaller premium models, SUVs, convertibles, coupes, and performance products. Mercedes-AMG became the principal high-performance extension, while Mercedes-Maybach served the ultra-luxury segment. The G-Class evolved from a rugged off-road vehicle into a luxury model with a distinctive global following. Corporate changes also shaped the brand. In 1998, Daimler-Benz merged with Chrysler Corporation to form DaimlerChrysler. The transaction was described by management as a merger of equals but became controversial among investors, leading to litigation and a later settlement. Daimler subsequently separated from Chrysler and continued operating Mercedes-Benz as its central passenger-vehicle brand. In the twenty-first century, the brand has balanced traditional combustion-powered luxury vehicles with electrification, hybridization, connected services and automated-driving research. Mercedes-Benz created Mercedes-Benz AG in 2019 for cars and vans, while Daimler Truck assumed responsibility for branded heavy commercial vehicles. In 2021, Daimler Truck was separated from the group, and Daimler AG changed its name to Mercedes-Benz Group AG in 2022, reinforcing the focus on premium passenger cars, vans, and mobility-related activities. The parent company’s renaming as Mercedes-Benz Group AG in 2022 completed the new corporate positioning. Today the brand remains active globally, with passenger cars, performance and ultra-luxury derivatives, SUVs, electric models and light commercial vans. Electrification has become one of the defining developments of the modern brand. Mercedes-Benz introduced the EQ sub-brand for battery-electric and electrified products, including the EQC, EQA, EQB, EQE, and EQS. Alongside dedicated electric models, the company has increasingly integrated electric drivetrains, digital services, connected-car features, and advanced driver assistance into its established product families. The Concept CLA Class has been used to preview a future electric generation intended to combine efficiency, long driving range, software, and the brand's design language. Today, Mercedes-Benz operates globally as the main luxury passenger-vehicle brand of Mercedes-Benz Group AG. It combines a large model hierarchy with specialized AMG and Maybach derivatives, electric vehicles, customer financing and mobility services, digital sales and service channels, and extensive brand partnerships. Its continuing challenge is to preserve a heritage-based luxury identity while responding to electrification, software-defined vehicles, changing ownership patterns, stricter regulation, and increasingly competitive premium markets.
