Overview
Leggett & Platt is a diversified American manufacturer headquartered in Carthage, Missouri. Founded in 1883 by Joseph P. Leggett and Cornelius B. Platt, the company began with an improved steel-coil bedspring designed to support cotton, feather, and horsehair mattresses. Its early commercial challenge was the limited size of the Carthage market, so the founders and their relatives traveled by horse-drawn wagon to nearby communities, selling and assembling bedsprings for local merchants. The partnership was incorporated in 1901. For much of its early history, Leggett & Platt concentrated on bedsprings and related bedding hardware. It added innerspring units in 1933 and subsequently expanded into bed frames, bed rails, rollaway beds, folding cots, and other metal components. Manufacturing capacity grew from the original Carthage operation to plants in Louisville, Kentucky; Winchester, Kentucky; Ennis, Texas; and other locations. During the Second World War, the company also supported defense-related production. A major strategic transition began in 1960, when Harry M. Cornell Jr., a grandson of Joseph P. Leggett, became president and chief executive officer. Cornell and his management team concluded that the company could grow more effectively by becoming a broad component supplier rather than remaining primarily a finished bedding manufacturer. The resulting strategy combined internal product development, geographic expansion, direct relationships with furniture and bedding manufacturers, and acquisitions. This approach gradually made Leggett & Platt a supplier of engineered components across several industries and led to the company’s long-running description as “the components people.” The company entered public markets in 1967, moved to Nasdaq in 1971, and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol LEG in 1979. It exceeded $1 billion in revenue in 1990 and joined the S&P 500 Index in 1999. Its later portfolio included bedding components, adjustable bed mechanisms, furniture hardware, flooring underlayment and related products, automotive seating and structural components, aerospace and other specialized products, and textile-related products. The 2019 acquisition of Elite Comfort Solutions was a major expansion of the bedding business. The transaction added specialty-foam and private-label finished-mattress capabilities and was described as the largest acquisition in Leggett & Platt’s history at the time. By the 2020s, the company operated through multiple business units and maintained manufacturing facilities in numerous countries, serving manufacturers and distributors rather than relying principally on a consumer-facing retail brand. Its products are often embedded in other companies’ mattresses, furniture, vehicles, flooring systems, and industrial goods. Leggett & Platt’s identity is therefore primarily that of a business-to-business engineered-components company. Bedding remains central to its heritage and portfolio, but the company’s diversification gives it exposure to furniture, flooring, automotive, aerospace, and other industrial markets. In 2021 it reported a 50th consecutive annual dividend increase, while its later financial and portfolio decisions reflected changing conditions in bedding demand and the broader manufacturing cycle.
History
Joseph P. Leggett developed a spiral steel-coil bedspring in Carthage, Missouri, in 1883. The design used single-cone coils formed from wire, interlaced, and attached to a wooden slat base. Leggett partnered with Cornelius B. Platt, a blacksmith associated with the Platt Plow Works, to manufacture the product. Improvements were patented in 1885, and production initially took place at the plow works. Because the local market was small, the partners used traveling sales methods. Bedsprings and wooden slats were transported separately by horse-drawn wagon and assembled at stores or nearby sidewalks. The business built its first dedicated factory and offices in Carthage in 1890 and was incorporated in 1901 as Leggett & Platt Spring Bed & Manufacturing Company. Additional plants followed, including a Louisville facility and later factories in Kentucky and Texas. By 1947, the company had four plants and approximately 500 employees. Bedding remained the company’s principal activity until it began producing innerspring units in 1933. It later broadened its bedding range with rollaway beds, folding metal cots, bed frames, and bed rails. Wartime defense contracts helped sustain the business during the Second World War. The decisive change in corporate direction came in 1960, when Harry M. Cornell Jr., Joseph P. Leggett’s grandson, became president and chief executive officer. Under Cornell, Leggett & Platt pursued a component-manufacturing strategy, seeking growth through new products, national and international distribution, and acquisitions. Rather than focusing only on finished bedsprings, the company supplied specialized components to furniture, bedding, automotive, flooring, aerospace, and other manufacturers. Leggett & Platt became publicly traded over the counter in 1967, was quoted on Nasdaq in 1971, and joined the New York Stock Exchange in 1979 under the symbol LEG. It surpassed $1 billion in revenue in 1990 and entered the S&P 500 in 1999. In later decades, the company continued to combine organic product development with acquisitions. Its purchase of Elite Comfort Solutions in 2019 strengthened its specialty-foam and private-label mattress activities. By the 2020s, Leggett & Platt described its global organization as comprising 15 business units, approximately 20,000 employee-partners, and 135 manufacturing facilities in 18 countries.
