KTRE

KTRE is a full-power television station licensed to Lufkin, Texas, and serving the southern portion of the Tyler–Longview–Lufkin–Nacogdoches television market. The station broadcasts on virtual channel 9 and is affiliated with ABC on its primary service and Telemundo on digital subchannel 9.2. Its facilities and transmitter are located on TV Road near U.S. 69 in the Pollok area, while some operational functions, including master control, are coordinated with sister station KLTV in Tyler. KTRE began broadcasting on August 31, 1955. It was established by the owners of the former KTRE radio station and initially operated as a satellite of KPRC-TV, Houston's NBC affiliate. During its early years, however, the station sometimes departed from KPRC's schedule to carry programs from ABC and CBS. The Federal Communications Commission's 1964 decision to place Lufkin and Nacogdoches in the Tyler–Longview television market helped shape the station's subsequent structure. Soon afterward, the Buford family, which owned KLTV, acquired KTRE and developed it as a semi-satellite of KLTV. KTRE has historically combined network affiliation with local identity. Until 1984, it maintained a joint-primary arrangement involving ABC, CBS, and NBC, with a modest emphasis on ABC programming. The launch of KLMG-TV in 1984 removed CBS programming from KTRE and KLTV, while NBC remained available on a secondary basis until KETK-TV began broadcasting in 1987. KTRE and KLTV were sold to Civic Communications in 1989. Civic later became part of Liberty Corporation through a 2002 merger, and Liberty subsequently merged with Raycom Media in 2006. In 2019, KTRE became part of Gray Television, now known as Gray Media, following Gray's acquisition of Raycom Media. The transaction also placed KTRE and KLTV within a larger Gray-owned regional television group that included stations such as KXII, KBTX-TV, and KWTX-TV. KTRE continues to operate as a distinct station and maintains its own website, commercial inventory, legal identifications, selected local programming, and weeknight newscasts, but it is treated as a semi-satellite of KLTV for much of its network, syndicated, and news output. The station's current local news operation produces approximately five hours of locally originated newscasts each week, consisting of one hour on each weekday. At other major news periods, KTRE carries simulcasts of KLTV's programming, including weekday morning, midday, afternoon, evening, and weekend newscasts. This arrangement lets the two stations cover complementary geographic areas while sharing substantial newsroom and technical resources. KTRE's broadcast identity therefore combines local reporting for Deep East Texas with the programming, infrastructure, and regional reach of the KLTV operation.

KTRE signed on August 31, 1955, as a television station serving Lufkin, Texas. Its original owners were associated with the former KTRE radio station. The television outlet initially functioned as a satellite of KPRC-TV in Houston, an NBC affiliate, but its schedule was not completely exclusive to NBC: it periodically carried programs from ABC and CBS. A major structural change came in 1964, when the FCC placed Lufkin and Nacogdoches in the Tyler–Longview television market. The Buford family, owners of Tyler station KLTV, acquired KTRE soon afterward and repositioned it as a semi-satellite of KLTV. This arrangement allowed the two stations to share much of their network and syndicated programming while preserving separate local identities, facilities, advertising operations, legal identifications, and selected newscasts. For much of the period before 1984, KTRE and KLTV operated with a joint-primary affiliation arrangement involving ABC, CBS, and NBC. ABC received a slight preference, but the stations carried programming from all three major networks. The launch of KLMG-TV in September 1984 led KTRE and KLTV to drop CBS programming, although they continued to carry NBC on a secondary basis until KETK-TV began operation in March 1987. KTRE and KLTV were sold to Civic Communications in 1989. Civic later merged with Liberty Corporation in 2002, and Liberty merged with Raycom Media in 2006. These ownership changes preserved the close operational relationship between the Lufkin and Tyler stations. The station's technical history included power and antenna changes. For many years, KTRE transmitted at 26,000 watts from a relatively short tower. Its facilities were subject to spacing limitations intended to reduce interference with stations including WAFB in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and KETG in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. In the early 1980s, KTRE installed a new antenna and transmitter and increased its authorized technical capability, although the station remained subject to restrictions associated with those spacing concerns. The directional design of the new antenna also helped limit signal overlap with KLTV under the ownership rules then applicable to stations in adjacent markets. KTRE ended analog broadcasting on June 12, 2009, as part of the nationwide United States transition to digital television. Its digital operation ultimately moved to VHF channel 9, corresponding to its familiar virtual channel identity. The station later added Telemundo to digital subchannel 9.2. In June 2018, Gray Television announced its planned merger with Raycom Media. The FCC and U.S. Department of Justice approved the transaction, and the merger closed on January 2, 2019. KTRE consequently became a Gray-owned station and a sister station to KLTV and several other stations in nearby Texas markets. Today, KTRE remains a distinct Lufkin-licensed station but operates as a semi-satellite of KLTV. It produces approximately five hours of local news each week, including a one-hour weekday local newscast, and simulcasts additional KLTV news programs at other times. The station serves the southern portion of the shared market, while KLTV concentrates on the northern area. The two stations are generally treated as one ratings unit despite their separate brands and broadcast facilities.
