Kongsberg Gruppen ASA is a Norwegian multinational technology group headquartered in Kongsberg. The company traces its institutional origins to Kongsberg Våpenfabrikk, founded in 1814 as Norway sought a domestic industrial and military capability after the end of the Danish-Norwegian union. The Krag–Jørgensen rifle provided an important international breakthrough in the late nineteenth century, including adoption by the United States Army and other foreign customers. The company underwent a major restructuring in 1987 after the Toshiba–Kongsberg scandal, in which technology supplied through a Toshiba subsidiary and Kongsberg Våpenfabrikk was used in an alleged breach of CoCom restrictions on exports to the Soviet Union. Kongsberg Maritime consolidated marine automation, navigation, propulsion, underwater, and offshore capabilities. Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace developed missiles, remote weapon stations, surveillance, command-and-control, communications, and space-related systems. Kongsberg Digital brought together industrial software, digital twins, operational data, simulation, and solutions for maritime, energy, renewables, and utilities markets. History
Kongsberg Gruppen's history begins with Norway's effort to create a domestic industrial and defence capability. Silver mining had made Kongsberg an important centre of technical expertise, but the decline of the mines created unemployment and economic hardship. In the aftermath of the political changes surrounding Norway's constitution and separation from Denmark, the country also sought greater self-sufficiency in military production. Poul Steenstrup founded Kongsberg Våpenfabrikk on 20 March 1814. The factory initially produced firearms for the Norwegian armed forces. Its mining-derived engineering skills supported increasingly sophisticated manufacturing, and the organisation's most important nineteenth-century export success came from the Krag–Jørgensen rifle. Developed by Ole Herman Johannes Krag and Erik Jørgensen, the rifle was adopted by Denmark, Norway, and the United States. The American adoption created one of Norway's earliest major industrial export relationships with the US defence establishment. After the First World War, military orders declined. Kongsberg responded by producing civilian firearms, tools, shipping and whaling components, bicycle parts, forgings, shafts, and other engineered goods. It received international recognition for some civilian products, including awards at the 1929 Barcelona world exposition. During the German occupation in the Second World War, the factory was placed under German control, although production did not reach the levels sought by the occupation authorities. Following the war, Kongsberg became one of Norway's principal industrial-development institutions. A parliamentary modernisation programme in 1953 sought to create a national high-technology defence supplier serving Norway and NATO. Cooperation with the Defence Research Establishment contributed to later developments in missiles, air defence, naval systems, underwater technology, and communications. An agreement with Volvo in 1957 also expanded production of automotive components, a business that was later reorganised separately as Kongsberg Automotive. From the 1960s to the 1980s, Kongsberg pursued international growth and diversified rapidly. It entered gas turbines, submarine systems, aerospace, maritime electronics, offshore technology, and petroleum-related systems. The discovery and development of North Sea oil accelerated demand for dynamic positioning and subsea technology. Businesses such as Simrad and Norcontrol added sonar, navigation, automation, and marine-control expertise. By the early 1980s, civilian operations represented most of the company's activity, but the expanded group had also become financially and organisationally complex. The 1987 Toshiba–Kongsberg scandal became the decisive break with the old structure. Kongsberg and a Toshiba subsidiary were associated with the transfer of restricted technology to the Soviet Union, technology that could assist the manufacture of quieter submarine propellers. The resulting political and commercial crisis led the Norwegian state to divide Kongsberg Våpenfabrikk. Civilian operations were sold or separated, while defence operations continued as Norsk Forsvarsteknologi from 1987 to 1995. The reorganised company restored financial stability and later rebuilt its civilian and maritime portfolio. It launched an aerospace business in 1990, became publicly listed in 1993, and adopted the Kongsberg Gruppen name in 1995. In 1997, operations were organised principally around Kongsberg Maritime and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace. Subsequent development included the HUGIN autonomous underwater vehicle, Protector remote weapon stations, NASAMS, the Naval Strike Missile, the Joint Strike Missile, industrial simulation, digital services, and space-related activities. The group created and reorganised business areas several times in response to technology and market changes. Kongsberg Protech Systems was merged into Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace in 2017. Oil and gas technology activities were consolidated as market conditions changed, contributing to the formation and growth of Kongsberg Digital. The modern group is organised around Kongsberg Discovery, Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, and Kongsberg Digital, serving government, maritime, offshore, energy, industrial, renewables, utilities, and aerospace customers.
