History
Kobe Steel began in 1905 when Suzuki Shoten acquired Kobayashi Seikosho, a steel business in Wakinohama, Kobe, and renamed it Kobe Seikosho. In 1911, Suzuki Shoten separated the operation into Kobe Steel Works, Ltd. The business expanded during Japan's industrialization, receiving technical guidance and orders connected with naval arsenals after the Russo-Japanese War. This relationship helped the company increase its production capacity and technical capabilities. During the 1910s, Kobe Steel added machinery manufacturing to its steel activities. The First World War and the associated shipbuilding boom supported growth, while the company also began producing machinery for naval vessels.
