Overview
KGNS-TV is a broadcast television station serving Laredo, Texas, and the neighboring cross-border market around Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. The station broadcasts on virtual channel 8 and has maintained a primary affiliation with NBC since it first signed on. It also carries ABC programming, while sister low-power stations in the same market provide CBS, CW+, and Telemundo services. The station's programming and news operation therefore combine national network content with locally focused English-language journalism and, through a related Telemundo service, Spanish-language programming. The station began broadcasting on January 4, 1956, under the call sign KHAD-TV. It was established as an NBC affiliate but initially carried programming from CBS and ABC as secondary affiliations. Donrey Media Group acquired the station in 1958 and organized a call-letter contest involving students from communities on both sides of the Rio Grande. The winning identity, KGNS, was understood as an abbreviation for “Good Neighbor Station,” reflecting the station's role in a bilingual and binational region. Under subsequent ownership, the station gradually became more specialized: CBS programming moved to KVTV in 1973, and ABC programming moved to KLDO-TV in 1984, leaving KGNS as an exclusive NBC affiliate for a period. KGNS expanded its local programming over time. It launched a Spanish-language newscast in 1990, temporarily discontinued that service after the Spanish-language news staff resigned in 2002, and later restored local Spanish-language news through a Telemundo-associated digital service in 2010. The station also experimented with secondary network affiliations and digital-channel programming, including UPN and later CW-related services. In 2008, it began producing a 9 p.m. newscast for its second digital subchannel, targeting younger adult viewers and creating an additional prime-time local news outlet in the Laredo market. Ownership changed several times. Century Development Corporation acquired KGNS in 1987, SagamoreHill Broadcasting purchased it in 2004, and Yellowstone Holdings acquired it in a transaction involving several stations in 2013. Gray Television announced its acquisition of Yellowstone Holdings that same year, completing the transaction on December 31, 2013. Gray later became the station's parent company; the company is now known as Gray Media. The ABC affiliation was announced in 2013 and began on July 1, 2014, initially using a KGNS digital subchannel. The transition expanded KGNS's role from a longstanding NBC outlet into a multi-network local television operation. KGNS operates the principal English-language television news department in the Laredo market following the closure of KVTV's news operation in 2006. Its schedule includes weekday and weekend newscasts, with the station competing for local audiences against Spanish-language broadcaster KLDO and other market outlets. The station also operates alongside Gray-owned or affiliated low-power stations that carry additional network brands. KGNS moved from its longtime Del Mar Boulevard studios to a facility on Loop 20 in November 2023. Its studio and transmitter infrastructure support coverage of Laredo and the surrounding South Texas border region, an area where English- and Spanish-language media serve closely connected audiences.
History
KGNS-TV signed on in Laredo, Texas, on January 4, 1956, as KHAD-TV. From its launch, the station was primarily affiliated with NBC, but it also carried selected CBS and ABC programming. Donrey Media Group purchased the station on September 1, 1958. Soon after taking control, Donrey held a call-letter contest for elementary and middle-school students from communities on both sides of the Rio Grande. The resulting KGNS identity was associated with “Good Neighbor Station,” a name that suited the station's role in a border community. The station's network configuration changed as other broadcasters developed in the market. CBS programming moved to KVTV in December 1973. ABC programming moved to KLDO-TV in December 1984, leaving KGNS as an NBC-only affiliate. Century Development Corporation acquired the station in 1987. In 1990, KGNS added a Spanish-language newscast, Noticias en Español, anchored by Hector Lerma. That service later faced an interruption: in April 2002, the Spanish-language news staff resigned, and the station replaced the news program with a sitcom. KGNS subsequently shifted the time period back to English-language news in March 2003. SagamoreHill Broadcasting bought KGNS in 2004, with the Federal Communications Commission approving the transaction on December 1, 2005. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, the station also carried UPN programming for a period. After the planned merger of The WB and UPN into The CW was announced in 2006, KGNS used a digital subchannel for CW-related programming. The station began carrying a local 9 p.m. newscast on its second digital subchannel on June 21, 2008. The program, Laredo's First News at 9, was designed in part to reach younger adult viewers. Digital expansion also enabled KGNS to restore Spanish-language local programming. In 2010, a Telemundo-associated service began carrying local Spanish-language content, initially through a Sunday morning program and later through a weeknight 10 p.m. newscast. This complemented the station's English-language news operation and reflected the bilingual character of the Laredo–Nuevo Laredo market. In May 2013, SagamoreHill reached an agreement to sell KGNS, together with KGWN-TV and KSTF, to Yellowstone Holdings, a Frontier Radio Management subsidiary. Gray Television announced an agreement to acquire Yellowstone Holdings for $23 million on November 4, 2013, and completed the purchase on December 31. Gray remains the station's parent company through its evolution into Gray Media. KGNS expanded its network role again in the mid-2010s. On November 6, 2013, it announced an agreement with ABC. ABC programming began on July 1, 2014, on channel 8.2. The change ended a long period in which Laredo viewers had relied on cable carriage of stations from San Antonio or Corpus Christi for ABC programming. CW service later became available through a separate low-power operation, while KGNS continued its NBC service and local news production. The station's news department became especially important after CBS affiliate KVTV closed its news operation in 2006. KGNS thereafter operated the market's principal English-language television news department, broadcasting several hours of weekday news and regular weekend newscasts. It competes with Spanish-language outlets including KLDO and with other local television services. KGNS completed a studio relocation in November 2023, moving from Del Mar Boulevard to Loop 20, a facility previously associated with KLDO-TV. Its current operation combines network television, local news, digital broadcasting, advertising, and community-oriented programming for the South Texas border region.
