Overview
KCJO-CD is a low-power, Class A television station serving St. Joseph, Missouri, with CBS as its primary network affiliation. The station is owned and operated by the locally based News-Press & Gazette Company, commonly known as NPG, which also owns the St. Joseph News-Press, the News-Press NOW local news and weather service, and the market's other NPG television outlets: NBC/CW+ affiliate KNPG-CD and Fox affiliate KNPN-CD. The station's present identity developed through several ownership, call-sign, and affiliation changes. Its technical lineage reaches back to K30ND-D, a low-power digital license acquired by NPG from DTV America 1, LLC in December 2012. After the acquisition, the callsign became KNPG-LD. The station began broadcasting on January 1, 2014, initially carrying Telemundo programming. At that stage, Telemundo content was also made available in high definition through a digital subchannel of KNPN-LD, partly compensating for KNPG-LD's smaller low-power coverage area and limited carriage position. In 2016, NPG reorganized its St. Joseph television portfolio. The KNPG callsign moved to the company's channel 21 operation, which was converted into the market's locally based NBC affiliate. The channel 30 facility received the KBJO-LD callsign and continued operating as a Telemundo outlet. On February 24, 2017, NPG announced that channel 30 would become a CBS affiliate. The transition took place at 12:01 a.m. on June 1, 2017, when KBJO-LD became KCJO-LD and CBS returned to the St. Joseph market as a local in-market affiliation for the first time since 1967. Telemundo programming moved to a subchannel of KNPG-LD, while KCJO's CBS feed was simulcast on KNPN-LD's second digital subchannel to expand its practical availability. KCJO's CBS launch also expanded NPG's local news footprint. Rather than maintaining an entirely separate news department, KCJO shares the group's St. Joseph news operation with KNPN-CD, KNPG-CD, the St. Joseph News-Press, and News-Press NOW. Programming is produced at NPG's downtown St. Joseph facilities on Edmond Street, while the KCJO transmitter is located on South 16th Street near U.S. Route 36, southeast of downtown. The station's news schedule has included simulcasts of sister-station morning, early-evening, and late-evening newscasts, together with local reporting resources supplied by the newspaper and the News-Press NOW operation. To mark the CBS conversion, NPG worked with the Walter Cronkite Memorial at Missouri Western State University. Selected News-Press NOW editions were broadcast from the memorial, linking the station's relaunch with Cronkite's St. Joseph background and national broadcasting career. Through NPG's collection of local affiliations, the KCJO conversion helped give St. Joseph local affiliates for CBS, NBC, Fox, and CW+, while Telemundo remained available through the company's digital-subchannel arrangement. The station's integrated website and news infrastructure reflect its role as one component of NPG's broader local media operation rather than a separately branded digital publisher.
History
KCJO-CD's history is tied to News-Press & Gazette Company's expansion into over-the-air television in St. Joseph, Missouri. NPG first entered the local television market with the launch of KNPN-LD as a Fox affiliate on June 2, 2012. The company also used one of KNPN's digital subchannels to distribute Telemundo programming, providing the market with a local Spanish-language network outlet. On December 19, 2012, NPG completed its acquisition of the K30ND-D low-power digital television license from DTV America 1, LLC. The callsign was changed to KNPG-LD. The facility began broadcasting on January 1, 2014. Its main signal carried Telemundo programming, while a high-definition version was also available through a digital subchannel of KNPN-LD. Because low-power stations generally do not receive the same must-carry and retransmission-consent protections as full-power stations, the channel's distribution beyond certain cable and satellite outlets was not guaranteed. NPG subsequently reshaped its St. Joseph station group. In 2016, the KNPG-LD callsign was transferred to the company's channel 21 station, formerly KBJO-LD, as that operation prepared to become the area's first locally based NBC affiliate. The channel 21 operation joined NBC on November 1, 2016, with CW Plus programming moved to a new digital subchannel. The channel 30 station then adopted the KBJO-LD callsign and remained associated with Telemundo. On February 24, 2017, NPG announced another major change: KBJO-LD would become a CBS affiliate on June 1. The station took the KCJO-LD callsign to reflect the new affiliation and switched to CBS at 12:01 a.m. on the announced date. Telemundo was moved to a new digital subchannel of KNPG-LD, while KCJO's primary programming was simulcast in high definition on KNPN-LD's second digital subchannel. This arrangement helped address the smaller coverage footprint of the low-power channel 30 facility. The CBS conversion also changed the station's local-news role. During its Telemundo period, channel 30 did not produce a dedicated local newscast. After becoming KCJO, it began carrying simulcasts from the shared NPG news operation, including portions of KNPN's weekday morning newscast and the group's early-evening and late-evening newscasts. Reporting and production resources are shared with KNPN-CD, KNPG-CD, the St. Joseph News-Press, and News-Press NOW. The stations operate from NPG's corporate headquarters on Edmond Street in downtown St. Joseph, while KCJO's transmitter is situated on South 16th Street near U.S. 36. The relaunch was promoted through a partnership with the Walter Cronkite Memorial at Missouri Western State University. News-Press NOW editions were broadcast from the memorial to recognize Cronkite's connection with St. Joseph and his career in broadcast journalism. The affiliation change gave NPG local control of CBS, NBC, Fox, and CW+ outlets in the market, with Telemundo continuing through a digital-subchannel arrangement. KCJO's current identity therefore reflects both its CBS network role and its integration into NPG's consolidated local-media infrastructure.
