Junkers, formally Junkers Flugzeug- und Motorenwerke AG, was a major German manufacturer of aircraft and aircraft engines founded by engineer and inventor Hugo Junkers in Dessau in 1895. The business began outside aviation, producing boilers, radiators and related industrial equipment, but gradually became associated with advanced metalworking, aircraft structures and engines. Its importance in aviation history rests particularly on the use of duralumin and corrugated metal skins in aircraft construction. These techniques helped establish the practical foundations of the modern all-metal monoplane. During the First World War, Junkers developed a series of experimental and military aircraft, including the J 1, widely recognized as the first aircraft built with an all-metal structure, and the J 4, an armored close-support aircraft. The company continued its technical work despite the postwar restrictions imposed on Germany by the Treaty of Versailles. Its J 8 layout was developed into the F 13, which first flew in June 1919 and became the world's first all-metal airliner. The F 13 was sold internationally, including in North America through the Junkers-Larsen affiliate, and helped establish Junkers as a civil-aircraft pioneer. In the 1920s the company expanded its aircraft portfolio and international activities. A partial manufacturing operation was established near Moscow in 1922, where aircraft were produced and developed for Soviet use. Civil types such as the G 24, G 31, W 33 and W 34 served passenger, freight, postal, training and military roles. The W 33 and W 34 achieved substantial commercial and operational success and were associated with numerous aviation records. Larger designs culminated in aircraft such as the G 38, a four-engine transport that was among the largest landplanes of its era and used an unusual passenger arrangement extending into the wing roots. Junkers also pursued engines, aerial photography, transport concepts and experimental designs. Its portfolio included diesel and piston engines, and the company later became involved in jet-engine development. Financial difficulties in the early 1930s weakened the wider Junkers group. Hugo Junkers was pressured to surrender control of parts of his industrial interests and was removed from the company by the Nazi authorities in 1934. The firm was subsequently integrated into Germany's rearmament economy and became an important supplier to the Luftwaffe during the Second World War. Its aircraft included the Ju 52 transport, Ju 86, Ju 87 Stuka dive-bomber, Ju 88 bomber and reconnaissance aircraft, and a succession of transport, patrol, night-fighter and experimental jet projects. This wartime role tied the brand to German military production and the Nazi state, while its founder was absent from the organization. Junkers facilities suffered extensive wartime damage, but the corporate and technical remnants survived into the postwar period. In West Germany, Junkers GmbH participated in aerospace research and future-transport studies and employed Austrian engineer Eugen Sänger. The company was connected with the Flugzeug-Union-Süd joint venture involving Heinkel and Messerschmitt, later came under Messerschmitt control, and was absorbed into Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm. The Junkers name disappeared as an independent aerospace-company identity in 1969. The brand remains historically significant for all-metal aircraft construction, early air transport and the development of German military aircraft and engines.
History
Hugo Junkers founded the original industrial enterprise in Dessau in 1895. Its first products were boilers, radiators and other thermal equipment rather than aircraft. Junkers's engineering work nevertheless created capabilities in lightweight metal fabrication and patented technologies that later became central to aviation. The company's movement into aircraft manufacturing occurred during the First World War, when Junkers and his collaborators explored metal airframes as an alternative to the wood-and-fabric construction then dominant. The J 1 of 1915 demonstrated the feasibility of a full-metal aircraft structure, while later designs refined metal skins, internal bracing and aerodynamic layouts. The wartime J 4, known in military service as the J.I, combined an armored fuselage with an all-metal structure for close-support operations. The J 7, J 8, J 9 and related designs continued the company's monoplane research. After the war, the Treaty of Versailles temporarily restricted German aircraft construction. Junkers responded by concentrating on civil designs and by creating a production presence in the Soviet Union. The J 8 concept became the F 13, which flew on 25 June 1919 and was certified soon afterward. Its enclosed metal structure, low-wing layout and passenger cabin made it a landmark in commercial aviation. Through European sales and the Junkers-Larsen relationship, the aircraft also reached North American operators. The 1920s brought a varied range of transports, airliners, trainers, reconnaissance aircraft and engines. The G 23 and G 24 established a larger three-engine transport line, while the G 31 increased capacity. The W 33 and W 34 became particularly successful utility aircraft, serving civilian and military operators and participating in long-distance, endurance, altitude and other record attempts. The G 38 extended Junkers's structural ideas to a very large four-engine transport, with passenger accommodation in the wing-root areas. The company also studied ambitious concepts such as the J.1000 transatlantic aircraft and operated an aerial-photography division. The wider Junkers group experienced severe financial pressure around 1931. Corporate restructuring separated or sold parts of the industrial portfolio, including the thermal-equipment business, while Hugo Junkers's patent position became a central issue in efforts to stabilize the enterprise. In the political environment of Nazi Germany, control was taken from Junkers in 1934. The company was then redirected toward the state's rearmament program. During the Second World War it produced aircraft and engines for the Luftwaffe, including the Ju 52/3m transport, Ju 86, Ju 87 dive-bomber and Ju 88 bomber and reconnaissance family. It also worked on later transports, patrol aircraft, night fighters and pioneering jet-powered projects. This period made Junkers a substantial military contractor but also embedded the company in the industrial system of the Nazi regime. Bombing damaged Junkers facilities, yet the company survived the war and the establishment of East and West Germany in fragmented form. In West Germany, Junkers GmbH pursued aerospace research, including studies of advanced transport and orbital-flight concepts, and employed Eugen Sänger. Corporate ties led from Flugzeug-Union-Süd to Messerschmitt control and ultimately to absorption into MBB. The independent Junkers identity ended in 1969. Its historical legacy is therefore divided between pioneering civil aviation and all-metal construction, major contributions to aircraft-engineering practice, and extensive wartime production for Nazi Germany.
