Overview
Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) is a state-owned Israeli aerospace, aviation and defense company headquartered in Lod. It develops, manufactures, upgrades and maintains systems for military, government and commercial customers. Its portfolio spans combat aircraft modernization, unmanned aerial vehicles, loitering munitions, missile and air-defense technologies, airborne intelligence and early-warning systems, satellite platforms, space launch systems, avionics, electronic warfare, naval craft, ground systems and commercial aircraft conversions. The company began in 1953 as Bedek Aviation Company, an aircraft-maintenance organization created to support the young Israel Defense Forces and its air arm. Under the leadership of aviation entrepreneur Al Schwimmer, Bedek expanded from maintenance into aircraft manufacturing, systems integration and indigenous aerospace engineering. Its early manufacturing work included licensed production of the Fouga Magister trainer, known in Israel as the Tzukit, followed by the Arava short-takeoff-and-landing transport aircraft. The company subsequently developed the Nesher and Kfir fighter families, giving Israel greater control over combat-aircraft supply after France imposed an arms embargo. IAI diversified heavily from the 1960s onward. It entered anti-ship missiles, patrol boats, radar and avionics, business aircraft, aircraft overhaul and conversion, unmanned aircraft and space systems. Its maintenance, repair and overhaul activities became a major business, including structural, engine, avionics and passenger-to-freighter work on multiple commercial aircraft types. The business-aircraft activities produced the Westwind and Astra families and later contributed to the development and production of Gulfstream aircraft, including the G280. The Lavi fighter program was the company's most ambitious indigenous aircraft project. Although the prototype flew successfully in 1986, the Israeli government canceled the program in 1987 after a political and economic debate over its cost and strategic implications. The cancellation led to substantial restructuring and workforce reductions, but the program also generated technologies that were later applied to avionics, flight controls and other defense products. During the 1990s, IAI became increasingly export-oriented and expanded into satellites, launch vehicles and sophisticated airborne surveillance. Its Phalcon and related airborne early-warning systems, ELTA radars, Heron unmanned aircraft, Harop loitering munition and space products became important international offerings. In 2006, the company changed its corporate name from Israel Aircraft Industries to Israel Aerospace Industries to reflect its broader activities beyond aircraft. IAI remains closely connected to Israel's defense establishment while operating internationally through government-to-government agreements, commercial sales, joint ventures, industrial cooperation and long-term support contracts. It serves the Israel Defense Forces and foreign militaries, civil aviation operators, airports, space organizations and other government customers. History
Israel Aerospace Industries originated in 1953 as Bedek Aviation Company, established to maintain and repair aircraft operated by the Israel Defense Forces. The initiative was associated with Shimon Peres, then a senior Ministry of Defense official, while American-born aviation specialist Al Schwimmer became the company's founding president and helped build its engineering and industrial capabilities. The original workforce numbered approximately 70 employees. Bedek initially concentrated on aircraft maintenance, overhaul and modification. In 1959 it began licensed production of the Fouga CM.170 Magister trainer, locally designated Tzukit. The type served the Israeli Air Force for decades and was also used in combat during the 1967 war. IAI's first fully indigenous aircraft design was the Arava, a twin-engine short-takeoff-and-landing transport aircraft that first flew in 1969. The company also converted former Boeing 377 airliners into heavy-lift military transports after Israel could not obtain the desired American C-130 aircraft. France's arms embargo accelerated the development of indigenous combat aircraft. IAI produced the Nesher, derived from the Mirage 5, beginning in the late 1960s, and then developed the Kfir, which combined the Mirage-derived airframe with an American engine and Israeli systems. The Kfir entered Israeli service in 1975 and was later exported or leased to several foreign operators, including Colombia, Ecuador, Sri Lanka and the United States for adversary-aircraft training. The company broadened its portfolio during the 1960s and 1970s. It developed the Gabriel anti-ship missile, supported radar and avionics development through the ELTA business, built Dabur patrol boats and entered unmanned aviation with the Scout. IAI's maintenance operations grew into a large international overhaul business capable of handling airframes, engines, interiors and avionics across military and civil aircraft types. By the 1980s, it was performing major commercial programs, including Boeing 747 passenger-to-freighter conversions. IAI's Lavi program represented an attempt to create a modern indigenous multirole fighter for the Israeli Air Force. The aircraft rolled out in 1986 and made its first flight later that year. The government canceled the program in 1987 after a closely divided political decision, citing the financial and strategic burden of competing with established U.S. fighter programs. The cancellation triggered a major corporate reorganization and significant workforce reductions. Nevertheless, Lavi-derived knowledge strengthened IAI's capabilities in digital flight controls, avionics, systems engineering and aerodynamic design. IAI also entered the business-jet sector. The acquisition of North American Rockwell's Jet Commander activities provided the foundation for the Westwind family. Later Astra aircraft introduced revised fuselages, swept wings and upgraded systems. The business subsequently developed the Galaxy, which became associated with Gulfstream, and contributed to the G100, G150, G200 and G280 programs. General Dynamics' Gulfstream Aerospace acquired Galaxy Aerospace in 2001, while IAI continued to perform important development and manufacturing work. From the 1990s onward, IAI expanded into space and high-end mission systems. The company developed Ofek observation satellites, AMOS communications satellites and the Shavit launch vehicle. Its ELTA subsidiary became a major radar and electronic-systems supplier. IAI's Phalcon family and later EL/W-2085 and EL/W-2090 systems adapted advanced radar, communications and command functions to airborne early-warning platforms, including modified Gulfstream and Ilyushin aircraft. Unmanned systems became another central growth area. IAI developed the Scout, Searcher, Heron, Eitan, Bird-Eye and Panther families, as well as the Harpy and Harop loitering-munition systems. The company also expanded into ground robotics, electronic warfare, naval patrol boats, air defense, missile systems and counter-drone technology. These products serve Israeli requirements but are also sold through international defense contracts and industrial partnerships. In 2006, the company changed its name from Israel Aircraft Industries to Israel Aerospace Industries, formally recognizing its broader aerospace and defense scope. In the following years it continued to combine aircraft upgrades, MRO, satellite and missile development, UAV exports, radar, intelligence and integrated defense solutions. It remains owned by the Government of Israel and is one of the country's principal defense manufacturers and technology exporters.
