Overview

InterContinental Budapest is a luxury hotel on the Pest bank of the Danube in central Budapest, Hungary. Its location places it beside the Chain Bridge and opposite the Buda Castle district, making the property particularly associated with river views, historic city scenery, and access to central Budapest. The hotel operates under the InterContinental Hotels & Resorts brand, part of InterContinental Hotels Group, now commonly known as IHG Hotels & Resorts. The property opened on 28 November 1981 as the Forum Hotel. Its development was enabled by a favorable credit arrangement connected with an agreement between the Austrian and Hungarian governments. Construction began in July 1979, using plans by architect József Finta and interior design by László Király. The hotel was owned by HungarHotels, a Hungarian state-owned company, and was described as the second hotel in the country operating under a franchise agreement after the nearby Duna Inter-Continental, the hotel now known as Budapest Marriott. The Forum became an important Budapest hotel during the late socialist period and the transition that followed. Its operating performance was strong enough for the original 15-year loan, including interest, to be repaid during the seventh year of operation. In 1994, during the second phase of Hungary's privatization process, the property was transferred into the ownership of ÁPV Rt. in preparation for sale. A multi-stage tender followed. A bid by Daewoo initially succeeded in the second round but was later invalidated on formal grounds; in the third round, InterContinental was selected as the successful bidder. InterContinental acquired a 95 percent stake effective 1 November 1996 and purchased the remaining employee-held shares approximately six months later. The transaction included an obligation to renovate the hotel and a commitment not to make redundancies during the first year. The Forum name was replaced by InterContinental Budapest on 6 May 1997. Renovation work carried out between 1998 and 2000 helped establish the property as a five-star hotel. The site also has a wider hotel and wartime history. Before the Second World War, the Danube riverfront contained a row of prominent hotels, including the Carlton, Bristol, Grand Hotel Hungaria, and Dunapalota-Ritz. The Portuguese Consulate in Budapest operated from the Dunapalota-Ritz during the war. Portuguese diplomats Carlos de Sampayo Garrido and Alberto Teixeira Branquinho issued entry visas to persecuted people, helping approximately 1,000 Jewish refugees reach Portugal and escape Nazi persecution and the violence of Hungary's wartime allies. The earlier hotel row was largely destroyed during the war. The riverfront's postwar hotel revival began in the late 1960s with construction of the Duna Inter-Continental in 1968. Today, InterContinental Budapest is positioned as an upscale full-service city hotel. Its principal offer combines guest accommodation, Danube-facing rooms and suites, food and beverage services, meetings and events, and business and leisure facilities. The property is marketed as a base for visiting Budapest's historic center and as a venue for conferences, receptions, and social events. The hotel is also notable in local accounts for hosting international entertainers, athletes, public figures, and other visitors during the 1980s and 1990s.

History

InterContinental Budapest originated as the Forum Hotel, a major Danube-side hotel development in late socialist Budapest. Construction began in July 1979 according to designs by architect József Finta and interior designer László Király. The project was supported by a favorable credit arrangement following an Austrian-Hungarian governmental agreement. The completed hotel opened on 28 November 1981 under the ownership of HungarHotels, a state-owned Hungarian hotel company. The Forum was one of the country's early hotels to operate under a franchise arrangement. It followed the nearby Duna Inter-Continental, which opened in 1968 and is now known as the Budapest Marriott. The Forum's commercial performance was considered successful: the 15-year development loan, including interest, was repaid in the seventh year of operation. The property's setting predates the current building. In the early twentieth century, the Danube bank contained a continuous group of hotels, including the Carlton, Bristol, Grand Hotel Hungaria, and Dunapalota-Ritz. During the Second World War, the Portuguese Consulate was located in the Dunapalota-Ritz on the site of the present hotel. Diplomats Carlos de Sampayo Garrido and Alberto Teixeira Branquinho granted Portuguese entry visas to people threatened by Nazi persecution and Hungary's wartime fascist authorities. Historical accounts attribute the rescue of roughly 1,000 Jewish refugees to their actions, which provided a route to safety in Portugal. Much of the prewar hotel district was destroyed during the war. The Forum remained state-owned until Hungary's privatization process. In 1994, the hotel was transferred to ÁPV Rt., the state asset-management organization, to prepare it for disposal. The sale was conducted through three tender rounds. The first was declared invalid. Daewoo won the second round, but the result was subsequently annulled because of formal defects. InterContinental won the third tender. It acquired 95 percent of the property effective 1 November 1996 and bought the remaining 5 percent, held in employee shares, roughly six months later. The privatization agreement required a renovation and included a restriction against redundancies during the first year after the transaction. On 6 May 1997, the Forum Hotel formally adopted the name InterContinental Budapest. Renovation undertaken from 1998 through 2000 upgraded the hotel to five-star status and completed its transition into the InterContinental network. The hotel's location, architecture, and international brand made it a prominent hospitality venue in post-socialist Budapest. It hosted numerous well-known international guests, including sports figures, musicians, actors, racing drivers, and public personalities. Documented visitors from the 1980s and 1990s include FIFA president João Havelange, performer Amanda Lear, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, swimmer Mark Spitz, actor Larry Hagman, athlete Edwin Moses, singers Cliff Richard and Joe Cocker, tennis player Ivan Lendl, racing drivers Nigel Mansell, Michael Schumacher, and Damon Hill, footballer Ferenc Puskás, tenor Plácido Domingo, singer Diana Ross, and tennis player Gabriela Sabatini. These guest records illustrate the hotel's role as an international accommodation and events venue, but do not constitute ownership or endorsement relationships. The property continues to operate as InterContinental Budapest within the InterContinental Hotels & Resorts portfolio. Its core business remains full-service luxury lodging, supported by restaurants and bars, meeting rooms, event and banquet facilities, and views across the Danube toward the Chain Bridge and Buda Castle.
