Overview
Indonesian Aerospace, legally PT Dirgantara Indonesia, is Indonesia's principal state-owned aircraft manufacturer and one of the country's most important aerospace industrial institutions. History
Indonesia's aerospace industry developed from post-independence aviation initiatives connected to the Indonesian Air Force. In 1946, a planning and construction bureau was established in Yogyakarta, and Wiweko Soepono, Nurtanio Pringgoadisurjo, and J. Sumarsono worked on basic gliders and experimental aircraft. A motorized aircraft known as WEL-X, registered as RI-X, was built in 1948 using a Harley-Davidson engine. The independence struggle interrupted these activities, but experimental work resumed in 1953 with a small group operating at Andir Airport in Bandung.
