History
Indian Express Limited originated in the newspaper enterprise established by Ramnath Goenka in 1932. The business developed into one of India’s prominent newspaper groups, with a portfolio that eventually covered English, Hindi and Marathi journalism as well as specialist publications. Its central English-language properties became The Indian Express and The Financial Express, while Loksatta served Marathi readers and Jansatta served Hindi-speaking audiences in northern India. The group’s expansion was not limited to general-interest dailies. In 1990, it established a Business Publications Division serving professional and corporate audiences through business-to-business publications and events. The division addressed sectors including information technology, hospitality and travel, and pharmaceuticals and healthcare. This broadened the organization’s activities beyond consumer newspaper circulation and advertising. The company also developed a substantial geographic publishing footprint. Its newspapers have been published from more than a dozen Indian cities, including New Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Pune, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Kochi, Lucknow, Jaipur, Nagpur, Vadodara and Chennai. The network allowed the group to combine national editorial brands with regional editions and language-specific publications. Alongside its newspapers, the group operated periodicals such as the Sunday Express, Lokprabha and Screen. Screen focused on Indian cinema and entertainment and became a recognized part of the group’s magazine portfolio. These publications gave Indian Express Limited access to readership segments interested in weekend news, regional culture and the film industry. As the Indian media market moved toward online distribution, the group extended its publishing operations through Express Online. This digital operation hosted or supported websites associated with the group’s major brands, including IndianExpress.com, FinancialExpress.com, ScreenIndia.com, Jansatta.com, Loksatta.com and Lokprabha.com. It also supported specialist digital properties covering cricket and regional news. The company pursued content relationships beyond India’s domestic publishing operations. On 2 November 2006, the Indian Express Group signed a print-syndication agreement with The Economist. The arrangement covered selected surveys, reports and other content from The Economist, subject to the terms of the agreement, and represented an effort to supplement the group’s journalism and analysis with licensed international material. Indian Express Limited also had an association with Express Towers, a 25-storey building at Marine Drive in Mumbai. The property was sold in 2018 to Pune-based Panchshील for a reported ₹900 crore. The transaction marked a change in the group’s relationship with a prominent Mumbai commercial property. The group remains identified primarily with newspaper publishing and digital news. Its portfolio illustrates the diversification of Indian newspaper companies across languages, geographies, specialist magazines, online platforms, business publishing and events. Public reference material does not provide sufficient current information to document the company’s present executive roster, detailed ownership structure, financial results or exact corporate organization, so those matters are not stated here as facts.
