IMI Systems

IMI Systems, formerly Israel Military Industries and commonly associated with the Hebrew name Ta'as, was an Israeli defense manufacturer that developed and produced weapons, ammunition, missile systems, armored vehicles, protection technologies, and other military equipment. Its principal domestic customer was the Israeli security establishment, particularly the Israel Defense Forces, while several of its products and technologies were also marketed or exported internationally. The company's portfolio covered a wide range of defense categories. In small arms, products associated with the IMI name included the Uzi submachine gun, Galil family of rifles, Negev light machine gun, Tavor rifle, Jericho 941 pistol, and Desert Eagle pistol. Some of these products became internationally recognized firearms brands in their own right. The Desert Eagle originated through a design and manufacturing arrangement involving the American firearms company Magnum Research and IMI, which produced the pistol in several magnum calibers. IMI also operated beyond conventional firearms. Its systems portfolio included guided and unguided missiles, rocket artillery and launchers, tank guns, bombs, grenades, artillery and mortar ammunition, armored-vehicle solutions, bulldozer protection kits, explosive reactive armor, and active protection technology. Listed systems included MAPATS, Delilah, LAR-160, ACCULAR, EXTRA, Predator Hawk, and the Iron Fist active protection system. The company also produced or supported armored platforms such as the Wildcat APC/MRAP and CombatGuard. The small-arms business was separated from the wider IMI organization in 2005. IMI sold its Magen division, which covered small arms, to the Israeli privately held SK Group; the division was subsequently renamed Israel Weapon Industries. A major corporate transition occurred in November 2018, when Elbit Systems completed its acquisition of IMI Systems. A significant organizational change took place in 2005, when IMI sold its Magen division to the Israeli SK Group. Magen was the small-arms division, and after the transaction it became Israel Weapon Industries. This separated the firearms operation responsible for many of the best-known IMI-branded weapons from the remaining IMI defense-systems activities. The decisive change came in 2018. Elbit Systems completed its acquisition of IMI Systems on 25 November 2018. After the acquisition, the business was renamed Elbit Systems Land. The transaction integrated IMI's land-systems, weapons, ammunition, and related defense capabilities into Elbit Systems and brought the IMI Systems corporate identity to an end. IMI Systems is consequently a defunct standalone brand, although its technologies, product families, and organizational legacy continue through successor businesses and brands.
