Huawei Honor 8
A 2016 flagship smartphone introduced by Huawei's Honor sub-brand.
Last updated August 24, 2026
Overview
The Honor 8 is a smartphone introduced in 2016 as the first flagship model developed under Huawei's Honor sub-brand. It followed the Huawei Honor 7 and was positioned as a stylish, relatively affordable alternative to premium smartphones from Samsung and Apple. The device combined a glass-and-metal design with hardware that, at launch, was intended to deliver near-flagship performance at a lower price. The phone used Huawei's HiSilicon Kirin 950 system-on-chip, an eight-core processor paired with a Mali-T880 MP4 graphics processor. It was sold with 4 GB of LPDDR4 memory and either 32 GB or 64 GB of internal storage. Its 5.2-inch 1080p LCD used curved 2.5D glass and a multilayer optical finish designed to create reflective patterns on the rear panel. The chassis measured 145.5 by 71 by 7.45 millimetres and weighed 153 grams. An aluminium frame and glass back were offered in several colors, including black, blue, gold, pink and white, with availability varying by market. Photography was a central part of the product's positioning. The rear camera system used two 12-megapixel sensors: one focused on image detail and the other on color information. Software combined data from both cameras, while a Wide Aperture mode allowed users to alter the apparent focus and depth of field after capture. An 8-megapixel front camera supported selfies and video calls. The design placed the rear cameras flush with the glass back rather than using a prominent raised module. Other features included a rear fingerprint sensor, an infrared port for remote-control functions, USB Type-C connectivity, Quick Charge support, and dual-SIM capability on selected versions. The fingerprint reader also operated as a configurable smart button that could launch applications or perform scrolling actions. Huawei and Honor added gesture features such as knuckle-based screenshots and screen recordings through the device software. The Honor 8 launched in China in July 2016 and subsequently reached the United States, Europe and the Middle East. In the United States, it was sold unlocked through Honor and selected online retailers rather than through wireless carriers. Honor used the phone to expand its international profile, emphasizing design, camera capability, component quality and price while targeting younger consumers. The company reported more than five million registrations in China before sales began and more than 1.5 million units sold worldwide during the first two months, although these figures represented company-reported launch performance rather than audited financial results. The phone shipped with Android Marshmallow and Huawei's EMUI 4.0 interface. Honor began distributing an Android Nougat-based EMUI 5 update in February 2017. Although an Oreo update was initially considered unlikely because of hardware constraints, Huawei later confirmed support, and the final Android Oreo firmware was released in September 2018. The Honor 8 is now a legacy product rather than a current smartphone offering.
History
The Honor 8 emerged during Huawei's effort to establish Honor as a youth-oriented and digitally distributed smartphone brand distinct from Huawei's more conventional flagship line. It succeeded the Honor 7 and was presented as the first flagship smartphone made under the Honor name. Rather than competing solely through specifications, the product emphasized a visually distinctive glass exterior, dual-camera imaging and a price intended to undercut premium competitors. Honor launched the device in China in July 2016. Registrations opened before retail availability, and the company reported more than five million registrations within four days. Sales started on July 19. The reported response gave Honor a strong launch narrative in its home market and supported the brand's plan to use the model as an international showcase. International expansion followed quickly. Honor presented the phone in San Francisco and Paris in August 2016. In the United States, it became the brand's first flagship model marketed there and followed the earlier Honor 5X. The handset was sold unlocked through Honor's own website and selected retailers, including Amazon and Best Buy, rather than being distributed primarily through mobile operators. A blue version was initially a Best Buy exclusive for a limited period. Pre-orders were also opened in the Middle East in August, with retail sales beginning in September. The hardware strategy combined a 5.2-inch full-HD LCD, a Kirin 950 processor, 4 GB of RAM, a 3,000 mAh battery and 32 GB or 64 GB of storage. Its rear dual-camera design separated detail capture from color capture and used software processing to combine the results. A rear fingerprint reader, infrared transmitter, USB Type-C port and configurable smart-button functions gave the device features beyond basic biometric authentication. The reflective glass back was a major part of the phone's visual identity, although reviewers also noted that it readily showed fingerprints. Honor's promotional approach targeted millennials and highlighted what George Zhao described as the combination of attractive design, serious components and accessible pricing. Launch offers included gift-card rebates for qualifying United States pre-orders, limited protection for glass damage and a stated commitment to software updates. In Sweden, Honor staged a record attempt involving a smartphone carried by weather balloon from the Esrange Space Center. The resulting livestream reached 18,425 metres and was recognized by Guinness World Records as the highest smartphone livestream, despite the balloon not reaching its planned altitude. Reviews generally praised the phone's appearance, camera system and value. Comparisons with the Samsung Galaxy S7 and iPhone framed the Honor 8 as a lower-priced challenger to better-known premium devices. It received editors' choice recognition from Android Central and Tom's Guide, and was included in several 2016 midrange-phone rankings. Honor reported worldwide sales above 1.5 million units within the first two months, indicating substantial early momentum, though no independently sourced financial performance is established here. The phone shipped with Android Marshmallow and EMUI 4.0. An EMUI 5 update based on Android Nougat began in February 2017. Honor and Huawei initially indicated that Android Oreo might not be available because of hardware limitations, but later reversed course and confirmed the update. The final Oreo-based firmware appeared in September 2018. The Honor 8 is now a discontinued legacy model, and the available reference material does not establish a current support or sales status.
