HCLTech, formally HCL Technologies Limited, is an India-headquartered multinational technology company providing IT services, engineering and research-and-development services, cloud and digital transformation, cybersecurity, enterprise application work, infrastructure management, and software products. Its headquarters are in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, and its operations extend across roughly 60 countries through delivery centers, innovation laboratories, offices, and client-facing teams. The company emerged from the wider HCL enterprise founded by Shiv Nadar and a group of engineers in 1976. The original business concentrated on computing hardware and related technologies. HCL developed an indigenous microcomputer in 1978 and later worked on database, networking, and client-server technologies. HCL Technologies began as the research-and-development and software-services side of that enterprise and was incorporated separately in 1991 as HCL Overseas Limited. The business subsequently changed its name to HCL Consulting and, in 1999, to HCL Technologies, reflecting its increasingly broad software and technology-services activities. During the 1990s and 2000s, HCL expanded from software development into infrastructure management, enterprise applications, engineering services, and international delivery. It supported the establishment of India’s first floorless electronic stock exchange for the National Stock Exchange and built delivery capabilities in the United States, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region. HCLTech’s present business is generally organized into three principal areas: IT and Business Services, Engineering and R&D Services, and HCLSoftware. IT and Business Services covers digital transformation, cloud, infrastructure, applications, data, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and managed services. Engineering and R&D Services supports product engineering, embedded systems, industrial and automotive engineering, telecommunications, semiconductor-related work, and other technology-intensive industries. HCLSoftware develops and commercializes enterprise products acquired or built through the company’s software portfolio, including application security, endpoint management, collaboration, commerce, digital experience, automation, and data-management products. A major strategic turning point came in 2017–2019, when HCLTech entered a partnership with IBM and acquired a group of IBM software products. These transactions created HCLSoftware and gave HCL a larger recurring software-product business alongside its services operations. The portfolio included products such as AppScan, BigFix, Commerce, Connections, Digital Experience, Notes, Domino, Sametime, and Unica. HCL also expanded its data and analytics capabilities through Actian, acquired with Sumeru Equity Partners in 2018 and later brought fully under HCL ownership. The company serves enterprises and public-sector organizations in sectors including financial services, telecommunications and media, manufacturing, automotive, life sciences and healthcare, retail and consumer goods, energy and utilities, and technology. Its positioning combines large-scale offshore and nearshore delivery with consulting, engineering depth, proprietary software, and long-term managed-services relationships. In 2022, the company adopted HCLTech as its principal brand name. Subsequent expansion has included the acquisition of German automotive engineering company ASAP Group and the purchase of selected communications-technology assets from Hewlett Packard Enterprise. HCLTech is the flagship operating company of the broader HCL Group, while HCLFoundation functions as its corporate social responsibility arm in India.

HCLTech traces its roots to 1976, when Shiv Nadar and a group of engineers who had previously worked at Delhi Cloth & General Mills established a computing venture. The business was initially floated as Microcomp Limited and sold teledigital calculators to raise capital for a planned computer business. It was renamed Hindustan Computers Limited, or HCL, in August 1976. The early enterprise concentrated on indigenous computing hardware and technology development. HCL produced a microcomputer in 1978 and subsequently worked on relational database, networking operating-system, and client-server technologies. HCL Technologies developed from the software and research side of the HCL enterprise. On 12 November 1991, it was incorporated as HCL Overseas Limited as a separate provider of software development and technology services. In 1993, it entered enterprise infrastructure management and won work connected with the creation of India’s first floorless electronic stock exchange for the National Stock Exchange. The company was renamed HCL Consulting Limited in 1994 and HCL Technologies Limited in 1999 as its activities broadened. Throughout the 1990s, HCL expanded software-development capacity and built a presence across the United States, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region. The company went public in January 2000. In the early 2000s, its infrastructure arm expanded from VSAT connectivity into network security and broader IT infrastructure services. HCL formed a joint venture with Deutsche Bank in 2001 by acquiring a majority stake in Deutsche Software’s Indian subsidiary, later taking full ownership in 2004. It also developed specialized engineering credentials, including embedded software work for the Airbus A340 flight-warning system. In 2003, HCL sold its stake in HCL Perot Systems to its joint-venture partner, Perot Systems. International expansion continued during the middle of the decade, including expanded operations in Northern Ireland. The largest strategic acquisition of the period was Axon Group in 2008. Axon brought enterprise application consulting capabilities, particularly around SAP, and was integrated with HCL’s enterprise application services operations. The acquisition materially increased the scale of HCL’s enterprise applications business. A second major transformation took place between 2017 and 2019. HCL and IBM formed a strategic partnership covering a number of IBM collaboration products. HCL subsequently acquired a broader group of IBM software products, creating the foundation of HCLSoftware. These assets included application security, endpoint management, commerce, digital experience, collaboration, and marketing-automation technologies. In 2018, HCL and Sumeru Equity Partners acquired Actian, giving HCL a stronger data and analytics portfolio. HCL acquired the remaining minority interest in Actian in 2021. By 2021, HCL had reached reported annual revenue of $10 billion. In 2022, it rebranded as HCLTech, seeking to present its services, engineering, cloud, artificial-intelligence, and software activities under a more concise identity. The company continued to expand in specialist engineering and communications markets. In 2023, it acquired ASAP Group in Germany, an automotive engineering business, and announced a substantial managed network services agreement with Verizon Business. In 2024, it announced the acquisition of selected communications technology assets from Hewlett Packard Enterprise. HCLTech now operates as the flagship company of the HCL Group. Its main business divisions are IT and Business Services, Engineering and R&D Services, and HCLSoftware. The company supports clients through global delivery operations and serves industries ranging from financial services and telecommunications to automotive, manufacturing, healthcare, retail, energy, and technology. HCLFoundation is the company’s corporate social responsibility arm in India, while other HCL Group entities operate separately from HCLTech.
