Overview
Halogen Software was a Canadian enterprise software company focused on cloud-based talent management solutions. Its products were designed primarily for organizations employing between approximately 100 and 10,000 people, placing the company in the mid-market segment of the human-resources technology industry. The business was headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario, and developed a suite intended to help employers manage employee performance, development, communication, and related talent processes through hosted software. The company began in 1996 under the name Manta Corporation. In June 2001, it adopted the Halogen Software name, establishing the brand under which it became known in the human-capital-management market. Paul Loucks served as president and chief executive officer from 2000 until July 2015. During his tenure, the company expanded from roughly 25 employees to more than 500 and grew its customer base to more than 2,000 companies, according to the company's historical account summarized in Wikipedia. Halogen pursued an international expansion strategy during the 2010s. It opened a United Kingdom office in September 2011 and established its first Australian office in 2012. Between 2013 and 2015, it added offices in San Jose, North Carolina, Amsterdam, and Dubai. These locations supported the company's effort to serve customers beyond Canada and the United States and reinforced its positioning as a provider of internationally deployable human-resources software. The company also attracted institutional backing. JMI Equity had supported Halogen since 2008. In May 2013, Halogen became a publicly traded company on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol HGN. Its shares rose 17 percent on the first trading day, marking a significant financing and visibility milestone for the business. In September of that year, the company introduced two software modules aimed at improving manager-employee interaction. The announced capabilities included support for one-on-one meetings and the incorporation of the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator into employee communication and talent-management processes. Leadership changed in 2015. Les Rechan became president and chief executive officer after serving as interim CEO and as a member of Halogen's board beginning in May of that year. The transition occurred as the company continued international expansion and broadened its cloud software offering. Halogen's principal competitive identity was as a specialized talent-management platform rather than a general-purpose enterprise-resource-planning provider. Halogen remained an independent brand until May 2017, when Saba Software acquired the company for $293 million. The transaction ended Halogen's independent public-company status and moved its products and operations into Saba's software portfolio. Following the acquisition, Halogen no longer operated as an independent publicly traded company. Its history is therefore best understood as that of a Canadian cloud-HR software company that grew from a small domestic operation into an international mid-market talent-management vendor before being absorbed by a larger enterprise software provider.
History
Halogen Software originated in 1996 as Manta Corporation. The company changed its name to Halogen Software Inc. in June 2001, beginning the development of the identity associated with its cloud-based talent management business. Its software was aimed at organizations with roughly 100 to 10,000 employees, a segment that often required more structured human-resources processes than small businesses but did not necessarily want the complexity of very large enterprise suites. Paul Loucks became president and chief executive officer in 2000 and remained in that role until July 2015. During those years, Halogen expanded substantially, growing from approximately 25 employees to more than 500 and building a customer base of over 2,000 companies. JMI Equity had backed the company since 2008, providing private-equity support during a period of product and geographic expansion. Halogen began establishing an international operating footprint in the early 2010s. It opened an office in the United Kingdom in September 2011 and its first Australian office in 2012. From 2013 through 2015, it added offices in San Jose, North Carolina, Amsterdam, and Dubai. The locations reflected an effort to support customers across North America, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East rather than operate solely from its Canadian base. In May 2013, Halogen listed its shares on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the ticker HGN. The stock reportedly gained 17 percent on its first trading day. Later that year, the company expanded its software capabilities with two modules intended to support one-on-one discussions between managers and employees and to improve workforce communication. The product initiative also incorporated the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator into the company's talent-management approach. Leadership transitioned in 2015. Les Rechan had joined Halogen's board and served as interim chief executive officer beginning in May of that year, then became president and CEO after Loucks's departure in July. Rechan led the company during its final period as an independent business. In May 2017, Saba Software acquired Halogen for $293 million. The acquisition brought Halogen's cloud talent-management products into Saba's portfolio and ended Halogen's independent existence as a listed company. As a result, Halogen Software is now a defunct standalone corporate brand, although its business and technology form part of the company's acquisition history.
