Overview
Hallmark Media is the entertainment and television subsidiary of Hallmark Cards. Based in Studio City, California, it operates a group of U.S. cable and streaming properties centered on family-oriented entertainment, romantic television movies, seasonal programming, and adaptations connected with the broader Hallmark brand. Its principal services are Hallmark Channel, Hallmark Mystery, Hallmark Family, and Hallmark+, while the company also manages Hallmark Hall of Fame, the long-running anthology brand associated with Hallmark Cards. The company developed from Hallmark Cards' increasingly broad involvement in filmed entertainment. Hallmark had owned Hallmark Hall of Fame since 1951 and expanded its production interests through Signboard Hill Productions and the 1992 acquisition of RHI Entertainment. Those assets were combined under Hallmark Entertainment in the mid-1990s. Hallmark also explored cable-system ownership and international television ventures, but later shifted its emphasis from infrastructure and general film production toward branded television channels and programming. The direct corporate predecessor of Hallmark Media was Crown Media Holdings. Crown was organized in 2000 through the restructuring of Odyssey Network, a religious cable channel in which Hallmark Entertainment and other investors held interests. Hallmark retained voting control, and Crown Media completed an initial public offering in May 2000. Odyssey was relaunched as Hallmark Channel in August 2001, establishing the central television outlet around which the business would be built. The network gradually became known for original made-for-television movies, family programming, and a large annual holiday schedule. Crown Media added Hallmark Movie Channel in 2004. The service was later renamed Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, broadening the portfolio with mystery, drama, and movie programming. Hallmark Drama launched in 2017, and Hallmark Movies Now, a subscription streaming service, launched the same year. The company also formed Crown Media Productions in 2015 to finance and produce telefilms and brought Hallmark Hall of Fame under its control in 2016. Hallmark Publishing was established in 2017 as a related publishing operation for books and electronic titles connected with the company's entertainment themes. Hallmark's business has been shaped by programming partnerships and distribution agreements. Its productions have been licensed to broadcasters and platforms in markets including Canada, and a Hallmark content hub was added to Peacock for premium subscribers in 2022. The company also pursued promotional extensions such as Hallmark Channel Radio and connections between entertainment programming, Hallmark Cards, and the company's retail and loyalty ecosystem. In 2016, Hallmark Cards acquired the remaining publicly traded shares of Crown Media Holdings and took the company private. Crown Media adopted the Hallmark Media name in 2022, reflecting the consolidation of the television and streaming business under the better-known consumer brand. In 2024, Hallmark Movies Now was announced for rebranding as Hallmark+, with plans for original series and movies and benefits linked to Hallmark Cards and retail offerings. Hallmark Media remains primarily a U.S.-focused producer and distributor of comfort-oriented, relationship-centered, and seasonal entertainment.
History
Hallmark Media's origins lie in Hallmark Cards' long-standing investment in filmed entertainment. Since 1951, Hallmark Cards had owned and presented Hallmark Hall of Fame, an anthology television series that became one of the company's most recognizable entertainment properties. Hallmark later created production entities and expanded its library through the 1992 purchase of RHI Entertainment. In the mid-1990s, RHI and Signboard Hill Productions were brought together under Hallmark Entertainment, which also explored home video, international television, animation, and family-oriented pay television ventures. Hallmark entered the cable-system business through Crown Media, formed in 1991 as an investment vehicle for cable operators. The company acquired several systems but ultimately exited infrastructure ownership after reassessing the business. Its holdings, serving more than 800,000 customers, were sold to other cable operators. The retreat allowed Hallmark to concentrate on content production and television networks rather than physical cable distribution. The corporate structure that became Crown Media Holdings was created in 2000 through the reorganization of Odyssey Network. Hallmark, Liberty Media, Chase Equity Associates, and the National Interfaith Cable Coalition transferred interests into the new company. Hallmark received high-vote shares and retained control. Crown Media went public in May 2000, although its early international and network ventures were unprofitable and required restructuring. The company later acquired programming assets from Hallmark Entertainment and assumed substantial obligations associated with those assets. In August 2001, Odyssey Network was relaunched as Hallmark Channel. This was the decisive transition from a general media holding company into a branded television business. Hallmark Channel developed a schedule emphasizing original movies, family viewing, romance, and holiday programming. Hallmark Movie Channel followed in 2004 and was renamed Hallmark Movies & Mysteries in 2014. During the 2000s, Crown Media also sold international Hallmark channel operations and reduced or disposed of several production and library assets, including the Filmation library and the production arm that returned to the RHI Entertainment name. Management under Henry Schleiff and later Bill Abbott focused on improving distribution, carriage, advertising, and programming economics. Hallmark Channel expanded its household reach and gradually moved toward a lifestyle and original-programming model. The company considered additional partnerships, including a possible Hallmark Home channel with Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, although that proposal did not become a major operating network. Crown Media created Crown Media Productions in 2015 to support original telefilm production and assumed control of Hallmark Hall of Fame in 2016. Hallmark Cards acquired the remaining public shares of Crown Media Holdings in 2016, taking the company private. Crown Media subsequently expanded its branded portfolio with Hallmark Drama and Hallmark Movies Now in 2017. It also established Hallmark Publishing and developed distribution relationships with broadcasters, radio operators, and streaming platforms. In 2019, the company ended its relationship with Lori Loughlin after her arrest in the college-admissions investigation, a highly visible reputational and programming decision. Bill Abbott left in 2020, and Wonya Lucas became chief executive later that year. Crown Media was renamed Hallmark Media in 2022. The new identity emphasized the relationship between the entertainment operations and Hallmark Cards. Hallmark Media also pursued wider digital distribution, including a Peacock content hub. In 2024, Hallmark announced that Hallmark Movies Now would become Hallmark+, adding new original programming and benefits tied to Hallmark's cards and retail ecosystem. The company remains an active, privately held media business whose central strategy is to monetize a distinctive, family-oriented entertainment brand across linear television, streaming, production, licensing, and publishing.
