Overview

Globe Telecom, Inc., generally known as Globe, is one of the Philippines' principal telecommunications operators. Based in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, the company serves consumer, business, and enterprise customers through mobile communications, fixed broadband, fixed-line connectivity, digital products, and technology-enabled services. Its principal shareholders are Ayala Corporation and Singapore Telecommunications, commonly known as Singtel, and its shares trade on the Philippine Stock Exchange under the symbol GLO. The company traces its corporate lineage to Globe Wireless Limited, which was incorporated in the Philippines in 1935 after a legislative franchise for wireless long-distance messaging was transferred from the Robert Dollar Company. It later combined with Mackay Radio & Telegraph Company and Philippine Press Wireless to form Globe-Mackay Cable and Radio Corporation. Ayala began investing in the business in 1974, and Globe-Mackay became the first Philippine telecommunications company to offer shares to the public in 1975. A 1991 merger with Clavecilla Radio Corporation broadened the company’s domestic telecommunications capabilities, while a partnership with Singtel in the 1990s established the ownership and strategic structure that remains central to the business. Globe expanded from international wireless and cable communications into a full-service telecommunications provider. Its mobile network has progressed through 2G, 3G, HSPA+, 4G LTE, LTE-Advanced, and 5G technologies. The company also operates large fixed-line and broadband networks through affiliated entities, including Innove Communications. Its consumer portfolio includes postpaid and prepaid mobile services, home broadband, digital-only mobile offerings, and related content and lifestyle products. Its enterprise activities cover connectivity, managed services, information technology, cloud-related services, and other communications solutions. Globe has also pursued businesses adjacent to connectivity. G-Xchange developed the GCash mobile-payment and remittance service, which later became associated with Mynt and evolved into one of the Philippines' most prominent digital-finance platforms. The company has supported technology entrepreneurship through Kickstart Ventures, developed content and entertainment activities through Anima and LiveMNL, and established or invested in technology and systems-integration businesses. Its digital strategy was further represented by the launch of GOMO PH in 2020, promoted as a fully digital telecommunications brand. The Philippine market is highly competitive. Globe competes with the PLDT group and its wireless brand Smart Communications, newer operator Dito Telecommunity, and fixed-broadband specialist Converge ICT. Subscriber rankings have shifted over time because of network competition, SIM registration requirements, and the deactivation of unregistered SIM cards. Globe has nevertheless remained one of the country's largest operators and has continued deploying 5G in major population centers and other locations. Its positioning combines broad network reach with digital services, customer experience, mobile data, home connectivity, and enterprise technology capabilities.

History

Globe Telecom's history begins with the development of wireless communications franchises in the Philippines. In 1928, the Philippine Legislature granted the Robert Dollar Company a franchise to operate wireless long-distance message services. The franchise was transferred in 1934 to Globe Wireless Limited, a Philippine corporation incorporated on January 15, 1935. In 1965, Globe Wireless Limited merged with Mackay Radio & Telegraph Company and Philippine Press Wireless, creating Globe-Mackay Cable and Radio Corporation. Legislative action expanded the company's authority to operate international communications systems. Ayala Corporation began investing in Globe-Mackay in 1974. The company offered shares to the public in August 1975, becoming the first Philippine telecommunications company to do so. A new 50-year franchise was granted in 1980. In 1991, Globe-Mackay merged with Clavecilla Radio Corporation, a domestic telecommunications pioneer, and became GMCR, Inc. The combination expanded its ability to serve both international and domestic communications requirements. A strategic relationship with Singapore Telecom was established in 1993, bringing Singtel into the company's long-term ownership structure. GMCR adopted the name Globe Telecom, Inc. in 1998. The company broadened its mobile and fixed-line operations in the following decade. In 2001, it acquired Isla Communications Company, or Islacom, initially in a joint venture involving Deutsche Telekom. Islacom later became wholly owned by Globe, and its fixed-line assets and subscribers were consolidated under the subsidiary. Islacom was subsequently renamed Innove Communications. Innove received a nationwide fixed-line franchise in 2005, supporting the expansion of local exchange and broadband infrastructure. Globe also received spectrum for 3G services in 2005 and later integrated Touch Mobile prepaid operations into its wireless business in 2008. Globe's strategy increasingly extended beyond basic connectivity. In 2004, it invested in G-Xchange, the entity that operated the GCash mobile-payment and remittance service using Globe's network. GCash later developed within the Mynt structure and became a major Philippine digital-finance platform. Globe also joined other Asian telecommunications operators in forming Bridge Alliance in 2004, seeking shared regional infrastructure and services. In 2008, Globe acquired mobile-content company Entertainment Gateway Group, later renamed Yondu. The company formed or supported investment and technology ventures, including GTI Business Holdings and Kickstart Ventures, which was launched in 2012 as a technology-business incubator. Globe pursued additional fixed-line and enterprise opportunities during the 2010s. It entered arrangements connected with ABS-CBNmobile, provided network capacity to the service, and sought greater control of Bayan Telecommunications through debt conversion and rehabilitation proceedings. The BayanTel transaction faced regulatory and court-related complications. Globe also acquired Asticom, a systems integrator and information-technology services provider associated with Ayala and Singtel interests. Its broader portfolio included financial-services initiatives such as BPI Globe BanKO, although ownership of BanKO was later transferred to BPI. The brand expanded its consumer and entertainment presence in 2016 with Globe Lifestyle, Anima, and LiveMNL. Innove received a renewed legislative franchise in 2018. In 2020, Globe introduced GOMO PH, a fully digital mobile brand aimed at customers seeking app-based service interactions and data-oriented offers. Network development progressed from earlier 2G, 3G, HSPA+, and 4G LTE systems toward LTE-Advanced and 5G deployment. By the 2020s, Globe was competing across mobile, fixed broadband, enterprise communications, digital finance, and technology services against PLDT and Smart, Dito Telecommunity, and Converge ICT. SIM registration and the resulting deactivation of unregistered cards materially changed reported subscriber totals, but Globe remained one of the Philippines' largest telecommunications operators.
