GATC Biotech was a German genomics and biotechnology services company that provided DNA and RNA sequencing, genome analysis, and bioinformatics for academic and industrial customers. Founded in 1990, it initially worked on the commercialization of a nonradioactive sequencing technology platform patented by Prof. Pohl, one of the company's founders. History
GATC Biotech was established in 1990 in Germany with an initial emphasis on commercializing a nonradioactive sequencing technology platform patented by Prof. Pohl, one of its founders. During this early period, the company developed technology and instrumentation rather than operating solely as a sequencing contractor. Its direct blotting electrophoresis system, the GATC 1500, was used in the European Saccharomyces cerevisiae genome project, linking the company to one of Europe's important early large-scale genomics programs.
