Overview
Fox Corporation is an American multinational media company created in March 2019 through the separation of the television broadcasting, news, and sports assets retained by 21st Century Fox after The Walt Disney Company acquired most of that company. The new company preserved the Fox name and began trading publicly as an independent business, with Lachlan Murdoch serving as executive chairman and chief executive officer. Rupert Murdoch later became chairman emeritus and announced his retirement as Fox Corporation chairman effective November 2023. Fox operates a concentrated portfolio rather than the diversified film, theme-park, and international entertainment structure acquired by Disney. Its principal businesses include the Fox broadcast network, Fox Television Stations, Fox News Media, Fox Sports, the free ad-supported streaming service Tubi, Fox Business, Fox Entertainment, and digital media activities organized through Tubi Media Group. The company’s programming emphasis is live and appointment-based content, particularly national and local news, sports, political coverage, reality and entertainment programming, and broadcast television. The company’s formation was shaped by regulatory and strategic considerations surrounding Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox. Disney already owned ABC, and the United States dual-network rule prevented it from acquiring another major broadcast network. As a result, the Fox broadcast network, Fox-owned stations, Fox News, Fox Sports’ national operations, and related assets were separated into the independent company. Regional sports networks were not retained and were ultimately transferred to a consortium led by Sinclair Broadcast Group. Since its launch, Fox has expanded selectively into digital video, sports betting partnerships, production, podcasting, and international sports media. It acquired Tubi in 2020, purchased TMZ and MarVista Entertainment in 2021, created Fox Entertainment Studios and Fox Entertainment Global in 2022, and formed Tubi Media Group in 2023 to coordinate digital properties including Tubi, Credible Labs, Blockchain Creative Labs, and other news, sports, and entertainment platforms. Fox also announced Fox One, a streaming service combining the Fox broadcast network with the company’s cable channels, as part of its response to cord-cutting and changing television consumption. Fox’s brand positioning is built around nationally recognized news and sports franchises, a broad broadcast distribution footprint, and a politically distinctive news identity. Its revenue model combines advertising, affiliate and retransmission fees, programming and distribution arrangements, digital advertising, and other media-related activities. The company remains closely associated with the Murdoch family, while its corporate strategy has emphasized maintaining a comparatively focused portfolio of live content and scalable digital extensions.
History
Fox Corporation emerged from the restructuring of 21st Century Fox associated with The Walt Disney Company’s proposed acquisition of the company’s film, television production, cable entertainment, and satellite-broadcasting assets. Disney announced the transaction in December 2017. The assets left outside the transaction were intended to form a more focused company, informally described as New Fox, retaining the Fox broadcast network, Fox-owned stations, Fox News, Fox Business, and national Fox Sports operations. Regional sports networks were separated from the transaction after United States antitrust concerns involving Disney’s ownership of ESPN. Lachlan Murdoch was selected to lead the successor company rather than his brother James Murdoch. Fox filed its registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission in January 2019 and began operating independently on March 19, 2019, the same period in which it replaced 21st Century Fox in the S&P 500. Disney completed its acquisition of the other 21st Century Fox assets the following day. Under the transaction arrangements, Disney was expected to phase out use of the Fox brand in certain acquired businesses to distinguish them from the newly independent Fox Corporation. Fox’s early strategy was to remain concentrated in broadcast, news, sports, and live programming. It did not pursue the former regional sports networks, which were sold to a Sinclair-led consortium and later rebranded. In 2019, Fox Sports expanded into sports betting through its investment and commercial relationship with The Stars Group, producing the Fox Bet brand. Fox also experimented with new content development through SideCar, although that unit was closed in 2020. The company broadened its digital and production capabilities through a series of acquisitions. It purchased a majority interest in Credible Labs and acquired animation studio Bento Box Entertainment in 2019. In 2020, it acquired Tubi, giving Fox a substantial free ad-supported streaming platform. TMZ joined Fox in 2021, followed later that year by MarVista Entertainment, a television and film production company. These moves extended Fox beyond linear television while preserving its emphasis on advertising-supported distribution. In 2022, Fox announced Fox Entertainment Studios, its first effort to build a wholly in-house television production operation, and introduced Fox Entertainment Global as an international distribution unit. Monarch was identified as the studio’s first series. In 2023, Fox organized Tubi, Credible Labs, Blockchain Creative Labs, and other digital properties into Tubi Media Group under Paul Cheesbrough. The same year, Fox and News Corp considered reuniting after having been separated in 2013, but the proposal was abandoned following resistance from shareholders and James Murdoch. Rupert Murdoch announced in 2023 that he would retire as Fox Corporation chairman, becoming chairman emeritus while Lachlan Murdoch continued as chairman and chief executive. A later Nevada probate dispute concerned control of voting rights under the Murdoch family trust and attracted attention because of its implications for the governance and editorial direction of the family’s media assets. Fox continued pursuing digital audio, streaming, and sports expansion. It acquired Red Seat Ventures in 2025 and announced Fox One, a streaming product intended to aggregate the Fox broadcast network and cable channels for audiences moving away from traditional pay television. It also announced expansion into Mexican sports broadcasting through Caliente TV and a proposed minority investment in Penske Entertainment, the owner of the IndyCar Series and Indianapolis Motor Speedway. These developments reflect Fox’s continuing effort to use recognizable news and sports brands across broadcast, cable, streaming, and digital platforms.
