Flemings Food Stores

Flemings was an Australian supermarket chain that operated primarily in Sydney and nearby parts of New South Wales. The business began in 1930, when Jim Fleming Sr. and George Fleming opened its first stores under the trading name E.L. Lakin. The early business developed as a grocery retailer and later adopted the name Fleming's Fabulous Food Stores after the Second World War. By that period, the chain had expanded substantially and was reported to have reached approximately 100 stores. The most important change in Flemings' corporate history occurred in June 1960, when Jim Fleming Jr. and his father sold 55 Flemings stores to Woolworths Limited for $10 million. The transaction brought the chain into the Woolworths corporate group while allowing Flemings to continue operating as a distinct store brand for many years. Flemings occupied the discount end of the grocery market, a positioning that was later echoed in the development of other Woolworths-related retail formats. Jim Fleming Jr. remained active in grocery retailing after the sale. In the early 1970s, he acquired Warman's Stores in New South Wales and renamed the business Jewel Food Stores. Jewel was directed toward a similar discount-oriented segment of grocery retailing, making it a related part of the broader history of value-focused supermarket competition in New South Wales. From the late 1990s, Woolworths progressively integrated Flemings stores into its own operating model. During the late 2000s and afterward, individual locations were closed, refurbished, or converted to Woolworths supermarkets and, in some cases, Woolworths Metro stores. The transition was completed over a number of years rather than through one single closure event. The Pendle Hill store was refurbished and rebranded as Woolworths in late 2009. The Umina Beach store closed on 17 June 2010 and was replaced by a Woolworths store across from the former Flemings location. The Bexley North site later became a Woolworths Metro store in 2017. The final Flemings-branded store, at Jannali, closed on 19 May 2020 and was replaced by Woolworths Metro. Flemings is therefore a defunct supermarket brand whose locations and operating heritage were absorbed into Woolworths' retail network.

The external Flemings signs and identity remained in place for some time, but the stores increasingly functioned as part of the Woolworths retail system. The final phase involved site-by-site conversion, closure, or replacement. The Pendle Hill store was refurbished and changed to Woolworths in late 2009. The Umina Beach store closed on 17 June 2010 and was replaced by a Woolworths location opposite the former Flemings premises. The Bexley North store was later converted to Woolworths Metro in 2017. The last Flemings store, at Jannali, closed on 19 May 2020 and was replaced by Woolworths Metro. Flemings consequently ceased to exist as an active retail brand, although its former stores and operating history remain part of Woolworths' supermarket network in Australia.
