Overview
Firth Brown Steels was a major British steel and engineering business rooted in Sheffield, England. Its corporate identity emerged from the long industrial histories of two neighbouring Sheffield companies: Thomas Firth & Sons and John Brown & Company. The companies began cooperating in 1902 through a share exchange and working agreement, while retaining separate management. They formally combined in 1930 to create Firth Brown Steels. The company’s importance extended beyond ordinary steel production. Thomas Firth & Sons had developed from a nineteenth-century crucible-steel business into a producer of heavy forgings, armaments and specialised steel. John Brown & Company had built a strong position in files, railway products, springs, buffers, shipbuilding and marine engineering. Their combined capabilities gave Firth Brown a broad industrial portfolio spanning metallurgy, transport, defence, heavy machinery and naval construction. One of the company’s most enduring legacies was its role in the development and commercialisation of stainless steel. In 1908, the two predecessor businesses established the Brown Firth Research Laboratories. Under Harry Brearley, research initially focused on finding steel capable of resisting erosion in gun barrels. Experiments with chromium-bearing steels led to the recognition of a material that resisted corrosion and became known as “rustless steel,” later renamed stainless steel. The first commercial cast was produced in 1913. Research continued after Brearley’s departure, and W. H. Hatfield developed the nickel-bearing 18/8 alloy in 1924. Marketed as Staybrite, this alloy became associated with the widely used stainless-steel grade later standardised as SAE 304. Firth Brown also developed important products for railways and aerospace. In the late 1930s it worked with Southern Railway chief mechanical engineer Oliver Bulleid to create the Bulleid Firth Brown locomotive wheel, a lightweight disc wheel designed to improve strength and reduce rail hammer effect. The business also produced specialist high-temperature materials, including Rex 78, which was used for turbine blades in early jet-engine work associated with Frank Whittle’s Power Jets W.1. The company diversified through acquisitions and industrial affiliations. It acquired interests in Westland Aircraft and Markham & Co. during the 1930s, and purchased Parkhead Forge in Glasgow in 1957. Its wider history was also linked to John Brown’s shipbuilding and marine-engineering operations at Clydebank, where Brown-Curtis turbine technology contributed to naval and commercial vessels. The shipbuilding activities faced worsening economics after the Second World War and became part of Upper Clyde Shipbuilders in 1967; the organisation entered liquidation in 1971. In 1973, Firth Brown merged with the wire manufacturer Richard Johnson and Nephew to form Johnson and Firth Brown Ltd. In 1982, Johnson Firth Brown and British Steel Corporation’s River Don Works were combined to form Sheffield Forgemasters, initially with ownership divided between the private business and the British government. The successor business experienced financial difficulties, restructuring and later ownership changes. Firth Brown Steels therefore ceased to operate as an independent corporate entity, but its Sheffield metallurgical and forging heritage continued through the Sheffield Forgemasters lineage and related successor businesses.
History
The history of Firth Brown Steels is inseparable from the development of Sheffield as a centre of specialist steelmaking. Thomas Firth & Sons originated in the 1840s, when Thomas Firth and two of his sons established a steel business after leaving Sanderson Brothers. The enterprise moved to Norfolk Works on Savile Street, where it operated crucible furnaces, file-making facilities and a substantial rolling mill. During the nineteenth century it supplied iron and steel to firearms manufacturing, including Samuel Colt’s operations, and later entered the armaments business directly. Its heavy-forging achievements included the production of very large artillery pieces. John Brown & Company also began as a Sheffield steel business in the 1840s. John Brown initially manufactured files, but the company later moved toward railway products, steel springs, buffers, ship cladding, shipbuilding and marine engineering. Brown’s conical railway buffer, developed in 1846, became an important product. The company consolidated its operations at Atlas Works, opened in 1856, and used increasingly modern steelmaking processes to produce economical material for railway applications. John Brown expanded into shipbuilding by acquiring the Clydebank Shipbuilding and Engineering Company in 1899. The Clydebank operation became the group’s shipbuilding division and helped establish John Brown as a major supplier of marine engineering technology. Its Brown-Curtis turbine machinery was selected for important Royal Navy vessels and was also used in commercial shipping. This marine connection later linked the Firth Brown story with major liners, including RMS Queen Mary and RMS Queen Elizabeth, although shipbuilding became increasingly difficult after the First World War because of reduced orders, foreign competition and industrial disputes. The two Sheffield steelmakers began a formal corporate relationship in 1902 through exchanged shares and a working agreement. They continued to operate under their own management for nearly three decades. In 1908 they established the Brown Firth Research Laboratories. Research led by Harry Brearley was initially directed at preventing erosion in gun barrels. His experiments with chromium-containing steels revealed a material with unusual resistance to rust and corrosion. The first commercial cast was made in 1913. Brearley left the laboratory in 1915 after a dispute concerning patent rights, but the research programme continued under W. H. Hatfield. Hatfield’s work produced the 18/8 stainless steel alloy in 1924. Commercially branded Staybrite, it combined chromium with nickel and became one of the most influential stainless-steel formulations. The business recognised that stainless steel had consumer as well as industrial potential. At the 1934 Daily Mail Ideal Home Exhibition in London, Firth Brown sponsored Staybrite City, where stainless steel was presented through domestic and design applications, including tableware and household products. The alloy was eventually standardised internationally as SAE 304. The companies finally merged in 1930 to form Firth Brown Steels. In the following decade the business diversified through investments and acquisitions. Its stainless-steel operations were reorganised in 1934 as Firth-Vickers Stainless Steels, jointly owned with English Steel Corporation. Firth Brown acquired a significant interest in Westland Aircraft in 1936 and bought Markham & Co. in 1937. Markham was known for mining machinery, winding engines and tunnelling equipment used on major underground construction projects. In 1957 Firth Brown acquired Parkhead Forge in Glasgow. The company’s engineering research also produced products outside stainless steel. In 1938 it developed the Bulleid Firth Brown locomotive wheel with Oliver Bulleid of Southern Railway. The cast disc design was intended to be lighter and stronger than conventional spoked wheels and to reduce the hammer effect transmitted to rails. In 1939 the company developed Rex 78, a high-temperature steel used in turbine-blade applications, including early jet engines. The shipbuilding side of the wider John Brown organisation declined during the post-war period. By the mid-1960s the Clydebank yard was considered uneconomic. It became part of Upper Clyde Shipbuilders in 1967 and the consortium was liquidated in 1971. Firth Brown’s steel and engineering interests continued, and in 1973 the business merged with Richard Johnson and Nephew to form Johnson and Firth Brown Ltd. A further major reorganisation occurred in 1982, when Johnson Firth Brown and British Steel Corporation’s River Don Works were combined to create Sheffield Forgemasters. The new enterprise was jointly owned by Johnson Firth Brown and the British government. It encountered severe financial problems the following year, leading to debt restructuring, board changes and a management rescue plan. In 1998 the business was divided and sold to American purchasers. The non-aerospace operations later failed and entered liquidation in 2003, after which a management buyout helped preserve parts of the industrial capability. Firth Brown Steels is therefore best understood as a defunct corporate brand whose technologies, facilities and industrial heritage contributed to the continuing Sheffield Forgemasters tradition.
