Last updated August 21, 2026
Overview
EssilorLuxottica is a Franco-Italian multinational group focused on the design, manufacture, distribution and retail of eyewear and optical technologies. It was established on 1 October 2018 through the combination of French ophthalmic-lens specialist Essilor and Italian eyewear manufacturer Luxottica. The transaction brought together two companies with complementary positions: Essilor was particularly strong in prescription lenses, lens research and optical equipment, while Luxottica controlled a large portfolio of frames and sunglasses, major retail chains, and a broad set of fashion licensing relationships. The resulting group operates across much of the eyewear value chain. Its activities include prescription and sun lenses, frames, sunglasses, optical instruments, digital and physical retail, wholesale distribution, vision-benefit services and, following later expansion, ophthalmic diagnostic equipment and hearing-related technology. Its brand portfolio includes Ray-Ban, Oakley, Persol, Oliver Peoples, Vogue Eyewear, Arnette, Alain Mikli, Costa Del Mar, Foster Grant and Bolon. The group also manufactures eyewear under licensing or production agreements for fashion and luxury names such as Armani, Burberry, Chanel, Coach, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Ralph Lauren, Tiffany & Co., Tory Burch and Versace, subject to the terms and duration of individual agreements. Retail is a central part of the model. The group owns or operates chains and online businesses including Sunglass Hut, LensCrafters, Pearle Vision, Vision Express, For Eyes, Óticas Carol, Clearly, EyeBuyDirect and FramesDirect.com. These channels give the company direct access to consumers while also supporting distribution of its own and licensed products. Its manufacturing and technology activities include lens platforms such as Varilux, Crizal, Eyezen, Transitions, Xperio, Optifog and Essilor Sun Solution, as well as optical and diagnostic technologies associated with Essilor, Shamir, Oakley and Ray-Ban. The merger initially produced governance friction because the transaction preserved significant influence for both legacy organizations. Luxottica founder Leonardo Del Vecchio became chairman, while former Essilor leadership retained important roles. Public disagreements between Del Vecchio and Essilor chairman and chief executive Hubert Sagnières continued during the first years after completion. The dispute was later resolved in favor of a more unified leadership structure, with Francesco Milleri becoming chief executive officer and Paul du Saillant becoming deputy chief executive officer. Del Vecchio died in 2022, but his holding company Delfin remained an important shareholder. EssilorLuxottica has continued to expand through acquisitions and partnerships. The group increased its ownership of Shamir Optical Industry, acquired or invested in prescription laboratories and optical businesses in several markets, bought a controlling interest in GrandVision, and added Heidelberg Engineering to strengthen its ophthalmic diagnostic capabilities. In 2024 it agreed to acquire Supreme, extending the portfolio beyond traditional eyewear and lenses. The company is listed on Euronext Paris under EL and is included in major European equity indexes. The group reported 2025 revenue of €28.491 billion according to the cited Wikipedia reference, although financial figures should be read together with the company's own reporting for the relevant period.
History
EssilorLuxottica was created from the combination of Essilor and Luxottica, two companies that occupied different but strategically complementary positions in the optical industry. Essilor developed a global reputation in prescription lenses, optical research, lens manufacturing and related equipment. Luxottica, founded in Italy by Leonardo Del Vecchio, built a large manufacturing and brand platform around frames and sunglasses, then expanded into retail and fashion licensing. The merger therefore joined lens technology with frame design, branded eyewear, distribution and consumer retail. The combination was announced in January 2017. Although the transaction was technically structured as Essilor acquiring Luxottica, the agreement gave Luxottica founder Leonardo Del Vecchio a prominent role in the new organization and preserved important representation for both legacy companies. Required approvals were obtained from competition authorities in several jurisdictions, including the United States, European Union, Brazil, Canada and China. EssilorLuxottica formally came into existence on 1 October 2018. Delfin, Del Vecchio's holding company, contributed its Luxottica interest and became a major shareholder in the combined group. The first post-merger period was difficult. The governance arrangements gave influence to both Essilor and Luxottica leadership, and Del Vecchio and Hubert Sagnières disagreed publicly about managerial authority, integration benefits and the proper balance of power. The dispute became a defining feature of the group's early history. It was eventually settled through a leadership transition that strengthened Del Vecchio's preferred direction and placed Francesco Milleri in the chief executive role, with Paul du Saillant as deputy chief executive. Sagnières subsequently left the group. The resolution allowed management to focus more clearly on integration and expansion, although the merger continued to attract scrutiny because of the combined group's scale in the eyewear sector. After formation, the group expanded both geographically and across the optical value chain. It acquired Brille24, added stakes in prescription laboratories including businesses in Ecuador and Argentina, and increased its ownership of Shamir Optical Industry. It also acquired a controlling stake in GrandVision, whose retail network included businesses such as Vision Express and For Eyes. These moves reinforced EssilorLuxottica's strategy of combining proprietary technology and manufacturing with owned brands, licensed brands and direct retail channels. The company's portfolio inherited from Luxottica includes Ray-Ban, Oakley, Persol, Oliver Peoples, Vogue Eyewear, Arnette, Alain Mikli and Bolon, while Essilor contributed lens and optical technology brands such as Varilux, Crizal, Transitions, Eyezen, Xperio and Optifog. The group also maintains or has maintained licensing relationships with numerous fashion and luxury houses. This combination gives it influence over product development, production, branding, wholesale distribution and consumer sales. The group faced two notable controversies in the 2020s. In 2023 it disclosed a cyber incident dating from 2021 after investigating the matter and notifying law-enforcement agencies; public reporting suggested that a very large number of online accounts may have been exposed. Also in 2023, Turkish authorities imposed a competition-related fine connected with alleged non-compliance with prior obligations. These events added regulatory and data-security issues to the integration and market-concentration questions surrounding the company. Following Del Vecchio's death in June 2022, Francesco Milleri became the central figure in the group's management. EssilorLuxottica subsequently broadened its strategic scope. In 2022 Essilor acquired the remaining interest in Shamir and the group announced the purchase of hearing-technology startup Nuance Hearing. In 2024 it agreed to acquire Supreme and an 80% stake in Heidelberg Engineering. Supreme extended the group into a culturally influential streetwear label, while Heidelberg Engineering strengthened its position in ophthalmic diagnostics, including optical coherence tomography, confocal microscopy and scanning-laser technologies. Today EssilorLuxottica operates as a global, vertically integrated eyewear and vision-care group. It combines research and production with an extensive brand portfolio, fashion licensing, optical distribution, physical retail and online commerce. It is listed on Euronext Paris under EL and forms part of major European equity indexes. Its scale makes it one of the most influential participants in the global eyewear market, while its continuing acquisitions show an effort to connect eyewear with broader vision care, diagnostics, hearing technology and lifestyle brands.
