Overview
East Manchuria Railway was a short-lived private railway company operating in the Hunchun area of Japanese-controlled Manchukuo and across a short section of northern Korea. Its principal route linked Hunyung, on the North Chosen East Line in Korea, with Panshi on the Fenghai Line of the Manchukuo National Railway. Hunchun was the company’s main station and administrative center. Branches extended toward Gangouzi and Dongmiaoling, creating a small network intended to serve local settlements, mines, agricultural districts, and connections with larger Japanese-controlled railway systems. The railway originated as the Hunchun Railway, established in August 1932. Its initial plan called for a 762 mm narrow-gauge line between Hunchun and Gyeongwon, although the Korean terminus was later shifted to Hunyung because a Tumen River bridge had already been opened there in 1926. Construction was complicated by the international character of the proposed route. The first part of the crossing lay within Korea and was subject to the law and administration of the Government-General of Korea, while the remainder was in Manchukuo and fell under Manchukuo’s private-railway legislation. To avoid these conflicts, the line was opened in stages: the Manchurian section from Hunchun to Yongwanzi began service on 10 July 1935, and the short cross-border section to Hunyung opened on 1 November of that year. Passenger and freight interchange with the South Manchuria Railway was not arranged until February 1936. The line benefited from its strategic location near the Tumen River, the Korean border, and the Soviet frontier. It also served coal-producing areas, including mines near Ying’an and Hunchun. These factors made the railway more significant than its limited length might suggest. By February 1938, five daily round trips were being operated, using small steam-hauled trains and powered railcars. Services carried second- and third-class passengers and supported freight traffic connected with local extraction and settlement. In March 1938, an investment company called East Manchuria Company was established in Tokyo. On 15 June 1938, it acquired the Hunchun Railway and reorganized it as the East Manchuria Railway. The transaction brought a substantial increase in stated capital and supported a more ambitious development program. The company converted the original narrow-gauge system to standard gauge in November 1939, replacing the Tumen River bridge so that the route could connect more effectively with the South Manchuria Railway and the Manchukuo National Railway. Because the company had limited locomotive resources, it leased standard-gauge locomotives, including Dabuko-class tank engines, from the South Manchuria Railway. Expansion continued during the early 1940s. The route reached Luotuohezi and Hadamen in October 1940, while a branch from Luotuohezi through Maquanzi to Dongmiaoling opened the following month. In November 1941, the main line reached Panshi and the Hadamen branch was extended toward Gangouzi. The latter route was extended farther to Laolongkou in October 1942. At its greatest planned extent, the network was expected to cover roughly 92 kilometers, although further projects were abandoned as Japan’s position in the Pacific War deteriorated. The railway ceased operating after Japan’s defeat in 1945. The Soviet invasion of Manchuria and Korea, beginning on 9 August 1945, probably caused serious damage, but surviving records do not establish the exact date or circumstances of closure. The line was not rebuilt after the Soviet handover of Manchuria to the Republic of China in May 1946. It was eventually dismantled or abandoned. The bridge piers over the Tumen River survived, and sections of the Chinese right-of-way remained visible; part of the former alignment was later incorporated into infrastructure associated with the Changchun–Hunchun intercity railway, opened in 2015.
History
The railway’s history began with the creation of the Hunchun Railway in August 1932. Hunchun had only recently become available for intensive settlement and development after the Qing prohibition on settlement in the region was lifted in 1881. Japanese and Manchukuo authorities saw the district as a potential center for agricultural settlement, mining, and regional trade. A railway would also provide a feeder route to the South Manchuria Railway and improve connections with northeastern Korea. The original project envisaged a 762 mm narrow-gauge railway from Hunchun to Gyeongwon in Korea. The Korean terminus was later moved to Hunyung, where the Tumen River already had a bridge opened in 1926. The route presented unusual legal difficulties because a portion of the bridge and approach lay in Korea, under the authority of the Government-General of Korea, while the remainder lay in Manchukuo. The railway therefore had to operate across two legal systems and coordinate with the South Manchuria Railway for interchange. The Manchurian section from Hunchun to Yongwanzi opened on 10 July 1935. The remaining section to Hunyung opened on 1 November. Formal passenger and freight interchange with the South Manchuria Railway began in February 1936. By this time the railway was serving not only travelers but also coal mines and other local industries. Five daily round trips were operated in early 1938, using small steam locomotives, third-class and second-class coaches, and powered railcars. The company’s strategic importance increased in the late 1930s. Hunchun was close to both the Soviet border and Korea, and the regional railway system was viewed as important to Japanese military and economic planning. In March 1938, the East Manchuria Company was formed in Tokyo as an investment vehicle. It acquired the Hunchun Railway on 15 June 1938, converting it into a wholly owned subsidiary named East Manchuria Railway. Capital was increased from 120,000 Manchukuo yuan to 10 million yuan, and the share count rose from 6,000 to 100,000. The new company’s first major technical project was the conversion from narrow gauge to standard gauge. This work was completed in November 1939 and included rebuilding the Tumen River bridge, whose original width was insufficient for the wider track. Standard gauge permitted more direct interchange with the South Manchuria Railway and the Manchukuo National Railway. The company lacked a fully documented independent locomotive fleet and borrowed motive power from the Manchukuo National Railway and South Manchuria Railway. Among the locomotives associated with its standard-gauge operations were Dabuko-class 2-6-4 tank engines originally built by Baldwin for the Jihai Railway. The network expanded rapidly between 1940 and 1942. The main route was extended from Hunchun through Luotuohezi and Hadamen, while a branch ran from Luotuohezi through Maquanzi to Dongmiaoling. The main line subsequently reached Panshi, and the Hadamen branch was extended toward Gangouzi and later Laolongkou. Passenger services continued to use second- and third-class coaches. In 1942, there were two daily round trips between Hunchun and Panshi, while services also operated to Gangouzi and Dongmiaoling. Coal mines near Ying’an and Hunchun generated important freight traffic. The company’s planned development was interrupted by Japan’s defeat in the Pacific War. The Soviet Union entered the war against Japan on 9 August 1945 and invaded across the Tumen region. The railway was likely damaged during this campaign, although surviving sources do not document the precise extent of destruction or the exact date of closure. After Japan surrendered, the line ceased operation. The Soviet army transferred control of Manchuria to the Republic of China in May 1946, but the railway was not restored during the ensuing Chinese Civil War. It was ultimately dismantled and abandoned. Physical remnants survived on both sides of the border. No substantial trace of the Korean approach remained, although bridge piers were still visible in the Tumen River. On the Chinese side, portions of the right-of-way remained identifiable, with some sections later used for roads or incorporated into the alignment of the Changchun–Hunchun intercity railway, which opened in 2015.
