Druk Green Power Corporation

Druk Green Power Corporation Limited (DGPC) is Bhutan's national clean energy company and the backbone of its carbon-negative economy. Incorporated on December 24, 2007, as the sole generation utility, DGPC operates 2,471 MW of capacity across major hydropower plants such as Chhukha, Tala, and Mangdechhu. In 2024, revenue from power sales more than doubled after the consolidation of the Mangdechhu hydropower plant. DGPC aims to expand renewable capacity under its Corporate Strategy Plan for 2025 to 2040, targeting 15 GW of new hydropower and 5 GW of solar capacity.

Bhutan's hydropower journey began with the vision of His Majesty the Third King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. Under the leadership of His Majesty the Fourth King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, Bhutan shifted focus to constructing hydroelectric projects. DGPC was incorporated on December 24, 2007, as the sole generation utility. It brought existing plants under a unified operational structure. Key milestones include the commissioning of Chhukha Hydropower Plant (336 MW) between 1986-1988, Kurichhu (60 MW) in 2002, Basochhu (64 MW) in stages in 2001 and 2004, and Tala (1,020 MW) between 2006-2007.
