Doosan Group is a South Korean multinational conglomerate and one of the country's longest-running business groups. Its origins lie in the Park Seung-jik Store, opened in 1896 in Baeogai, an area now within Seoul's Jongno district. From that retail beginning, the organization developed into a diversified industrial group with activities in power generation, heavy equipment, engineering, construction, manufacturing, fuel cells, industrial vehicles, robotics, information technology, advertising, retail, sports, publishing, and cultural support. The group expanded particularly strongly from the late twentieth century onward as South Korea's industrial economy matured. Doosan traces its history to 1896, when Park Seung-jik opened the Park Seung-jik Store in Baeogai, now part of Seoul's Jongno district. The group experienced a significant environmental controversy in 1991, when phenol from a Doosan Electro-Materials facility entered the Nakdong River. The contamination caused a noticeable odor and led to imprisonment of environmental inspectors and plant managers.
