Donaldson is an American filtration company whose products protect engines, industrial processes, aircraft, bioprocessing equipment and other mission-critical systems from airborne, liquid and process contaminants. The company traces its origins to 1915, when Frank Donaldson Sr., then a tractor-equipment salesman, developed an air cleaner after seeing a customer’s tractor repeatedly fail in dusty agricultural conditions. That practical invention established the engineering-led culture that has remained central to Donaldson’s identity: solve a specific equipment problem, improve reliability, and convert the solution into a scalable filtration platform. The business began in agricultural and engine air filtration, but expanded over the twentieth century into exhaust systems, mufflers, hydraulic and lubricant filtration, dust collection, compressed-air purification and specialized industrial filtration. Its early customer relationships included agricultural-equipment manufacturers, with Deere becoming an important customer during the company’s formative decades. Donaldson’s first international manufacturing presence was established in Canada, and later expansion created subsidiaries and operating capabilities across Europe, Africa, Asia-Pacific and Latin America. A major strategic turning point came through diversification. The acquisition of Torit and Majac in the 1970s strengthened Donaldson’s position in industrial dust and air filtration, while later acquisitions added exhaust, compressed-air, aerospace, hydraulic, process and life-science capabilities. The company also developed proprietary filtration media and system architectures, including Ultra-Web fine-fiber media, PowerCore compact filtration technology and a broad family of engine and industrial products. These technologies are sold both as original equipment for manufacturers and as replacement products through distributors, dealer networks, private-label accounts and large equipment fleets. Donaldson historically reported two principal operating areas, Engine Products and Industrial Products. Its more recent organizational structure centers on Mobile Solutions, Industrial Solutions and Life Sciences. Mobile Solutions serves on-road and off-road vehicles, construction, mining, agriculture, powertrain and engine applications. Industrial Solutions covers dust, fume and mist collection, compressed air and gas, power generation, aerospace and defense, process filtration and other industrial markets. Life Sciences extends the company into bioprocessing equipment, membrane chromatography, viral-vector purification and related technologies through businesses including Solaris Biotechnology, Purilogics, Isolere Bio and Univercells Technologies. The company’s aftermarket business is strategically important because filtration products require recurring replacement and maintenance. Donaldson therefore combines engineered systems with replacement filters, service products, distribution support and application expertise. This creates a business model that balances cyclical original-equipment demand with recurring aftermarket revenue. The company serves customers ranging from independent operators and fleet owners to major global OEMs, and states that no individual customer accounts for more than 10 percent of revenue. Donaldson’s history began in 1915 when Frank Donaldson Sr., a Bull Tractor Company salesman, developed an air cleaner for a tractor operating in dusty Utah conditions. The invention addressed a practical mechanical problem: airborne dust was entering the engine and contributing to equipment failure. Donaldson commercialized the design and built a business around engine protection for agricultural equipment. The company was incorporated as Donaldson Company, Inc. in 1918, formalizing the enterprise established around the original invention. During the company’s first decade, Donaldson expanded its technical and commercial base by obtaining the Wilcox-Bennet air-filter license and introducing the Simplex filter. The company’s early relationship with Deere and other agricultural-equipment manufacturers helped create volume and credibility. In the 1930s, William Lowther joined the organization and contributed to the development of the NS Filter, which improved tractor performance. The Great Depression weakened demand from farmers and forced the company to reduce its scale, but patent transactions and continued filter production provided capital and market access that helped the business survive. World War II created new opportunities in aerospace and military filtration. Donaldson supplied or developed filtration technologies for aircraft, hydraulic equipment and specialized defense applications. The company’s research activities later extended into contamination control, collective protection, chemical and biological defense, military vehicles, missile systems, space vehicles and other complex platforms. These projects established capabilities in high-performance filtration under extreme operating conditions. The postwar period brought both expansion and organizational strain. Frank Donaldson Sr. died in 1942, and his eldest son, Frank Donaldson Jr., became president in 1951. The company expanded its product range into exhaust and muffler systems; by the early 1950s, muffler sales supported the opening of an exhaust manufacturing facility in Grinnell, Iowa. Donaldson went public in 1955. The decade also included employee strikes, the departure of key personnel who later competed with the company, and disputes involving the Internal Revenue Service over alleged hidden back taxes. Internationalization accelerated in the 1960s, with subsidiaries or operating entities established in Germany, South Africa, Britain, France, Australia and the Benelux region. Donaldson’s industrial-filtration position strengthened materially in the 1970s through the acquisition of Torit Corporation and Majac. These transactions expanded the company’s dust-collection and cartridge-filtration capabilities. Donaldson subsequently developed hydraulic-fluid filtration systems and introduced new industrial collector designs, including the TD cartridge collector. The company continued to build proprietary technology in the 1980s and 1990s. Ultra-Web fine-fiber media improved dust-capture efficiency and filter life, while the Downflo horizontal cartridge collector offered high airflow in a compact footprint. A recession affecting major equipment customers, including John Deere, pushed Donaldson to restructure and enter additional markets through acquisitions. The company acquired Tecnov, a French muffler manufacturer, in 1996 and launched Donaldson Korea in 1997. It began production in China in 1999 and acquired AirMaze Corporation for approximately $31.9 million. Expansion continued in the early 2000s. Donaldson acquired DCE dust control in the United Kingdom, Ultrafilter International AG, and later Aerospace Filtration Systems. Ultrafilter expanded the company’s compressed-air and process-filtration presence across numerous countries. Donaldson also added facilities in the Czech Republic and other locations, while developing a global network of manufacturing, sales and distribution sites. Its industrial portfolio grew to include dust, fume and mist collectors, compressed-air purification, gas-turbine filtration, PTFE membrane products and specialized systems for semiconductor, disk-drive, food, beverage and pharmaceutical processes. In 2015, Donaldson celebrated its centennial. At that time, the company described itself as a global filtration leader with more than 1,600 active U.S. and international patents and operations spanning engine and industrial applications. New facilities were opened in Skarbimierz, Poland, and in Bogotá and Cartagena, Colombia. The company received customer-recognition awards including a Master of Quality Award from Daimler Trucks North America in 2014 and Volvo Group Purchasing aftermarket awards in 2015 and 2016. During the 2020s, Donaldson expanded beyond conventional engine and industrial filtration into life sciences. The 2021 acquisition of Solaris Biotechnology added bioreactors, fermenters and tangential-flow filtration systems. Purilogics became part of Donaldson in 2022, adding membrane-chromatography technologies, and Isolere Bio was acquired in early 2023 to contribute IsoTag reagents and liquid-phase separation processes for viral-vector purification. Donaldson also incorporated Univercells Technologies into its life-sciences platform and opened a technical center in Research Triangle Park to support development and early commercialization. The company’s recent strategy has combined organic product development with targeted acquisitions. Examples include a dual-stage battery vent for electric vehicles, manufacturing-grade Purexa membrane products for bioprocessing, manufacturing-grade IsoTag AAV reagent and ArmorSeal air-cleaner technology for heavy-duty equipment. In 2026, Donaldson agreed to acquire and then completed the purchase of Facet Filtration, adding mission-critical fuel and fluid filtration capabilities in aerospace, defense and power generation. Leadership also transitioned from Tod Carpenter, who became executive chairman, to Richard Lewis, who became president and chief executive officer in March 2026. Donaldson now operates through Mobile Solutions, Industrial Solutions and Life Sciences, while retaining the core identity established by its original engine air-cleaner invention.
