Overview
Czapek & Cie is a Swiss haute horlogerie brand named after François Czapek, the Czech-born, Polish master watchmaker who established himself in Geneva during the nineteenth century. Its historical identity is closely connected with the early development of Patek Philippe: in 1839, Czapek and Antoni Patek formed Patek, Czapek & Cie, a partnership that produced finely made watches and established an important foundation for Patek’s later business. After that partnership ended, Czapek founded Czapek & Cie in 1845 with Juliusz Gruzewski, a Polish nobleman and associate of Napoleon III. The company developed a prestigious clientele and became a supplier to the French imperial court. During its nineteenth-century operation, it maintained an atelier in Geneva and commercial locations in Paris and Warsaw, serving customers that included Emperor Napoleon III, the Khedive Ismail Pasha of Egypt, and members of the House of Golitsyn. Czapek was also an author of significance in Polish horology: his 1850 book on watchmaking was among the earliest works on the subject published in Polish. The original company’s later history is less certain. It appears to have changed hands around 1869, possibly following Czapek’s illness or death, although the date and circumstances of his death are not established. Surviving watches and inscriptions indicate that the business continued for at least some time after his departure, including under a successor in Paris. The historical company therefore forms a documented but incomplete nineteenth-century chapter rather than an uninterrupted corporate lineage. The modern Czapek & Cie was re-established in Geneva in 2011. Harry Guhl, an art expert, rediscovered the name and developed a vision for its revival. Xavier de Roquemaurel joined the project in 2014, together with watchmaker Sébastien Follonier. The revived company sought to combine historical references with contemporary independent watchmaking, producing limited quantities and emphasizing design, movement architecture, finishing, and collector participation. Its first modern design study was the Czapek Chronograph, while the first full collection, Quai des Bergues, drew inspiration from a nineteenth-century Czapek pocket watch and from the address of Czapek’s first Geneva atelier. The Quai des Bergues project adapted the dial language of historical pocket watch number 3430 for a modern wristwatch and introduced the SXH1 movement, developed with Swiss movement specialist Jean-François Mojon of Chronode. Its double open ratchets and twin spring barrels reinterpreted the architecture of the historical movement while retaining a seven-day power reserve. In November 2015, the company used an equity campaign to raise more than CHF 2 million from over 100 watch enthusiasts and entrepreneurs, providing funding for its development and reflecting the brand’s independent, collector-oriented model. Czapek’s modern portfolio has expanded beyond classical dress watches. The Antarctique collection, launched in 2020, presented a more robust, contemporary sports-luxury direction while retaining the brand’s emphasis on unusual design and mechanical refinement. Its SXH5 automatic movement uses an open-worked architecture and provides a stated 60-hour power reserve. Other modern lines include the Faubourg de Cracovie chronograph family, which connects contemporary complications with Czapek’s Polish and European historical associations. Today, Czapek & Cie operates as a private Swiss luxury-watch brand serving an international collector market. Its positioning rests on historical authenticity, independent production, limited availability, distinctive dials, and technically ambitious mechanical movements rather than on mass-market scale.
History
François Czapek was a Czech-born, Polish watchmaker who arrived in Geneva in May 1832 and subsequently adopted the French form of his name. In 1834 he formed Czapek & Moreau with Swiss watchmaker Moreau of Versoix. Czapek married Marie, the daughter of clock- and watchmaker Jonas Pierre François Gevril de Carouge, in 1836, further connecting him to Geneva’s established horological environment. Czapek’s most important early business association was with Antoni Patek. On 1 May 1839, the two men established a six-year partnership in Geneva under the name Patek, Czapek & Cie. Czapek was responsible principally for watchmaking and finishing, while Patek directed sales and the commercial side. The firm employed approximately half a dozen workers by July 1840 and reportedly produced about 200 watches annually. Its output included highly finished watches that later entered important collections and auction records. When the partnership ended, Patek went on to establish the enterprise that became Patek Philippe with Adrien Philippe. In 1845, Czapek created Czapek & Cie with Juliusz Gruzewski. Gruzewski’s relationship with Napoleon III helped the company gain access to elite circles. Czapek & Cie became watchmaker to the imperial court and supplied watches to Napoleon III from 1855. The company maintained its Geneva atelier, opened a Paris shop at Place Vendôme in 1850, and established a Warsaw location in 1854. Its clientele included the Khedive Ismail Pasha of Egypt and the House of Golitsyn. Czapek also contributed to horological literature, publishing a Polish-language work on watchmaking in Leipzig in 1850. The original firm’s final period is not fully documented. It apparently changed hands around 1869, although the reasons are uncertain and may have involved Czapek’s illness or death. His date of death is unknown. A surviving stem-winding pocket calendar watch bears an inscription identifying A. Chaillet as successor to the former Czapek establishment in Paris, while another inscription refers to 1876. These objects suggest that the business continued after Czapek’s direct involvement. The brand was revived in Geneva in 2011 after Harry Guhl rediscovered the name. Guhl developed the project’s vision and brought in Xavier de Roquemaurel in 2014, with Sébastien Follonier participating as a watchmaker. The modern company began with the Czapek Chronograph design study and sought to create a contemporary independent manufacture inspired by historical Czapek watches. The first major collection, Quai des Bergues, took its name from the location of Czapek’s first Geneva atelier. Its design was based on pocket watch number 3430 from the 1850s. The modern interpretation used a proprietary SXH1 caliber developed with Jean-François Mojon and Chronode. The movement’s twin spring barrels and open ratchet architecture echoed the historic mechanism and supported a seven-day power reserve. In November 2015, Czapek financed further development through an equity campaign that raised more than CHF 2 million from over 100 international watch lovers and entrepreneurs. This funding approach reinforced the company’s independent and community-supported identity. On 26 May 2020, Czapek launched the Antarctique collection, introducing a more robust integrated-bracelet sports-luxury design. The line used the SXH5 automatic movement, whose open-worked architecture and 60-hour power reserve provided a modern technical signature. Czapek’s current identity combines historical reconstruction, independent Swiss production, distinctive dial design, complications, and small-scale collector-focused distribution.

Quai des BerguesLuxury mechanical wristwatches2015
Quai des Bergues was the first major collection of the modern Czapek & Cie. It takes its name from the Geneva address associated with François Czapek’s first atelier and draws design inspiration from historical Czapek pocket watch number 3430. The collection translates nineteenth-century dial proportions and visual details into contemporary wristwatches. Its mechanical identity is centered on the SXH1 caliber, developed with Jean-François Mojon and Chronode, whose twin spring barrels and open ratchet construction provide a seven-day power reserve.
AntarctiqueSports-luxury mechanical watches2020
Launched in 2020, Antarctique represents Czapek’s move toward a more robust everyday sports-luxury watch while preserving the brand’s independent haute horlogerie character. The collection combines an integrated-bracelet-oriented design language with a distinctive open-worked automatic movement. Its SXH5 caliber is described as providing a 60-hour power reserve and exposing elements of its mechanical architecture through the movement design. The line is intended to balance durability, elegance, and precision.
Faubourg de CracovieLuxury chronographs
Faubourg de Cracovie is Czapek’s chronograph family and connects the modern brand’s complication work with its Central European and Polish historical associations. The collection uses contemporary cases and chronograph displays while retaining the brand’s emphasis on unusual dial layouts, hand finishing, and limited production. It complements the more classically styled Quai des Bergues and the sports-luxury Antarctique within the current portfolio.
