History

Crestron’s origins trace to George Feldstein, an electronic engineer who had worked in industrial control and testing equipment before starting his own business. In 1969, Feldstein left his previous employer and began accepting engineering and repair assignments directly from other companies. One early project involved Colgate-Palmolive, for which he developed equipment intended to help automate the filling of detergent boxes with the correct amount of powder. The work established a foundation in practical industrial automation even though the company would later become best known for audiovisual and building-control technology. Feldstein founded Crestron in 1972 in Cresskill, New Jersey. The early business operated from modest premises, including space above a delicatessen, and took on a wide range of technical projects. A formative product direction emerged when Feldstein developed control technology for commercial presentation systems. His innovations included wireless remote control and presentation-management functions that could coordinate slide projectors, fades, dissolves, and other room actions. The concept expanded beyond presentation equipment to include audio switching, video projection, lighting control, and motorized shades. During the 1970s and 1980s, Crestron increasingly focused on integrated audiovisual and environmental control systems. In 1975, the company was incorporated as Crestron Electronics. It constructed its first dedicated Cresskill facility in 1980 and continued expanding its engineering, manufacturing, and support capabilities. Rather than selling only individual electronic components, Crestron developed a systems approach in which processors, user interfaces, switching equipment, lighting controls, and other devices could operate together through programmable logic. The company moved its headquarters to Rockleigh, New Jersey, in 1997 and expanded its research and engineering operations there. This period marked a major transition from a regional specialist to a global technology supplier. Crestron built a dealer and integrator ecosystem that allowed complex systems to be designed for particular buildings and customers. Its equipment began appearing in corporate facilities, universities, government buildings, auditoriums, houses of worship, healthcare settings, and high-end homes around the world. Professional education became an important part of the business model. Crestron Certification began in 1998, giving programmers and integrators a structured path to learn the company’s platforms. The program developed into Crestron Masters, introduced in the early 2000s as an annual education and training event covering programming, system design, technology architecture, best practices, and distribution. This training infrastructure helped Crestron support a specialized channel in which installers and consultants are responsible for tailoring systems to end users. In 2009, Crestron opened an Experience Center in New Jersey to demonstrate its residential and commercial technologies. During the 2000s and 2010s, the company expanded its offerings beyond traditional remote controls and room automation. Digital media distribution, networked video, lighting control, commercial collaboration, enterprise management, and home automation became increasingly important. The company’s investment in engineering during periods of economic uncertainty helped it develop products that later contributed to the DM NVX AV-over-IP portfolio. Leadership also evolved. George Feldstein remained the central figure in the company for decades and held numerous technology patents. In 2014, Randy Klein became president and CEO, while Feldstein died later that year. Klein led Crestron through the continued expansion of its commercial business and through the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, when demand for conferencing and remote-collaboration technology became strategically important. In 2021, Klein retired and Dan Feldstein, George Feldstein’s son and a former chairman and COO, became president and CEO. Crestron’s modern strategy combines hardware, software, cloud services, and professional integration. Crestron Flex addresses unified communications and meeting-room collaboration, while XiO Cloud supports centralized monitoring and administration. Crestron Home OS provides a customizable platform for premium residential automation. The company’s acquisition of 1 Beyond in 2022 added intelligent-video technologies, including automated speaker tracking and framing, to the commercial collaboration portfolio. Crestron also developed Sightline offerings that combine intelligent cameras and conferencing systems to improve the experience of remote meeting participants. By its fiftieth anniversary in 2022, Crestron had expanded to more than 90 offices and maintained a presence across multiple continents. It continues to operate as a private, family-owned company headquartered in Rockleigh, with additional U.S. facilities and a worldwide dealer, integrator, sales, and support network.
