Overview
Colors TV is an Indian general-entertainment television channel launched on 21 July 2008 by Viacom18. The service was introduced as a broad family-entertainment network, combining scripted Hindi-language programming with reality formats and other mainstream television content. Its programming mix has included family dramas, fantasy series, romantic dramas, comedy shows, and reality television, giving the channel a position within India’s mass-market general-entertainment segment. The channel began operations under Viacom18 with Rajesh Kamat as chief executive. In April 2011, Raj Nayak became chief executive, replacing Kamat, who subsequently left to join CA Media. The leadership change took place as Colors was expanding its reach and strengthening its position in the competitive Indian entertainment television market. Colors also developed an international distribution strategy. In January 2010, it became available through Dish Network in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. In those territories the service was branded Aapka Colors, meaning “Your Colors,” and shows were presented with English subtitles. The Aapka Colors name helped distinguish the service from another, now-defunct channel using the Colors TV name. Amitabh Bachchan served as brand ambassador for the channel’s launches in the United Kingdom and the United States. The channel entered the United Kingdom and Ireland on Sky in January 2010. It initially operated as a free-to-air service, later joined the ViewAsia subscription package, and subsequently underwent several changes in its distribution status. Colors was added to Virgin Media in 2011 as part of the Asian Mela package. In 2013 it left ViewAsia and returned to free-to-air satellite distribution while moving to Virgin Media’s basic package; in 2017, that arrangement was reversed and the channel again became a pay service. These changes illustrate the channel’s continuing effort to balance reach, subscription distribution, and the economics of international South Asian television. Colors has also supported related programming and brand extensions. Colors Rishtey, a sister channel, has carried reruns and programming associated with Pakistani and other television services, alongside original productions. In 2016 it carried a Nickelodeon programming block called Nick Hour India, and in 2019 it was rebranded as Colors Rishtey. Colors TV additionally hosted the Golden Petal Awards, a channel-broadcast ceremony recognizing personalities connected with or contributing to its programming; the awards were last held in 2017. The channel is now part of JioStar, the joint venture formed by Reliance Industries, Viacom18, and Disney India. Colors therefore operates within a larger Indian media and entertainment portfolio while retaining its identity as a general-entertainment television brand. Its principal role remains the distribution of mass-market scripted and unscripted programming to Indian viewers and audiences in selected overseas markets.
History
Colors TV was launched in India on 21 July 2008 by Viacom18 as a general-entertainment television channel. Its initial proposition centered on a broad mixture of family-oriented scripted programming and unscripted entertainment, including family dramas, fantasy programs, romantic dramas, comedy, and reality shows. This combination placed the channel in the highly competitive Indian general-entertainment market, where networks seek both broad household reach and recurring viewing through serial storytelling and reality formats. Rajesh Kamat served as the channel’s chief executive at launch. In April 2011, Raj Nayak replaced him as CEO. Kamat later left to join CA Media. The change occurred during Colors’ expansion period and represented a transition in management as the channel continued developing its domestic and international presence. International distribution began to become a significant part of the brand’s development in 2010. On 21 January of that year, Colors became available on Dish Network in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. In those markets it used the name Aapka Colors and supplied English subtitles with its programs. The alternate name was used to distinguish the service from a now-defunct channel that also used the Colors TV name. Amitabh Bachchan was selected as brand ambassador for the channel’s United Kingdom and United States launches. Colors entered the United Kingdom and Ireland on Sky on 25 January 2010. Before the launch, it acquired a Sky electronic programme guide slot associated with 9XM and reached an agreement to join the ViewAsia subscription package. The channel initially operated free-to-air, was subsequently included in ViewAsia from April 2010, and was added to Virgin Media in April 2011 through the Asian Mela package. Distribution arrangements later changed: in September 2013, Colors left ViewAsia, returned to free-to-air satellite distribution, and moved to Virgin Media’s basic package. In August 2017, the channel reversed that direction, leaving Freeview and becoming a pay channel again. The broader Colors portfolio included Colors Rishtey, a sister channel that carried programs from Pakistani channels and other television services in addition to original productions. Its programming included the BBC Media Action production Navrangi Re!, identified as the channel’s first original program. In 2016, Colors Rishtey carried a Nickelodeon programming block called Nick Hour India. The service was rebranded as Colors Rishtey on 1 March 2019. Colors TV also created a branded awards property, the Golden Petal Awards. Broadcast on the channel itself, the ceremony recognized personalities for their contributions to Colors TV and its programming. The awards were last held in 2017. The channel is currently identified as being owned by JioStar, the joint venture associated with Reliance Industries, Viacom18, and Disney India. Within that structure, Colors remains a recognizable general-entertainment television brand, combining Indian scripted and reality programming with distribution to selected overseas markets. Its history is defined by its 2008 launch, management transition, international expansion, recurring adjustments to pay and free-to-air distribution, and development of related channel and awards properties.
