Overview
CoinShares International is a financial-services and alternative-asset-management group headquartered in St Helier, Jersey. Its business is centered on digital assets, particularly cryptocurrencies, and is aimed at institutional, professional, and, historically, private investors. The company provides access to crypto markets through exchange-traded products, investment funds, actively managed strategies, indices, and related capital-markets services, allowing investors to obtain exposure to digital assets without necessarily holding the underlying tokens directly. The business developed from Global Advisors (Jersey) Limited, an asset manager established in 1999 with an initial focus on commodities. Under the direction of Daniel Masters and other investment professionals, Global Advisors shifted toward cryptocurrency markets in 2014. That year it launched the Global Advisors Bitcoin Investment Fund, described as the first regulated Bitcoin fund to be publicly traded. CoinShares subsequently became the group’s principal brand and expanded its activities through acquisitions, product development, and institutional partnerships. A major turning point came in 2016, when CoinShares acquired Swedish issuer XBT Provider. XBT Provider had launched an exchange-traded Bitcoin security on Nasdaq Stockholm in 2015, giving CoinShares an established platform in the European crypto-product market. The group later expanded its range to include physically backed products linked to Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, and other digital assets, as well as thematic baskets, staking-linked products, and blockchain-related equity indices. Through XBT Provider and its CoinShares Physical range, the company became one of Europe’s largest issuers of crypto exchange-traded products. CoinShares has also pursued infrastructure and institutional-market opportunities. In 2018 it joined Nomura and Ledger in establishing Komainu, a digital-asset custody business designed for institutional clients. Its activities have included market making, liquidity provision, venture investment, and other services connected with digital-asset capital markets. In 2023, the group created CoinShares Hedge Fund Solutions to offer actively managed crypto strategies, including approaches involving Bitcoin, Ether, arbitrage, and options. The company became publicly traded in Stockholm in 2021, initially on Nasdaq First North Growth Market, and moved to the main market of Nasdaq Stockholm in December 2022. Market stress in 2022, including the collapse of the Terra/Luna ecosystem and the bankruptcy of FTX, affected the wider digital-asset industry and CoinShares. The group subsequently discontinued its retail-facing offering, including its crypto trading application, and concentrated more heavily on institutional products and professional investment services. CoinShares strengthened its United States presence through the March 2024 acquisition of Valkyrie Investments, a crypto investment and exchange-traded-fund specialist that became CoinShares Valkyrie. In July 2025, its French asset-management subsidiary received authorization from the French Autorité des Marchés Financiers under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets framework, supporting the distribution of crypto investment and portfolio-management services across the EU. In September 2025, CoinShares announced a proposed New York listing through a merger with Vine Hill Capital. CoinShares therefore combines European crypto-product expertise with an expanding institutional and US-market strategy.
History
CoinShares traces its origins to Global Advisors (Jersey) Limited, an asset-management company founded in 1999 to invest primarily in commodities. The firm later became associated with Daniel Masters and a group of investment professionals who redirected its attention toward cryptocurrency markets as institutional interest in Bitcoin developed. In 2014, Global Advisors launched the Global Advisors Bitcoin Investment Fund. The fund was presented as the first regulated Bitcoin fund to be publicly traded and established an early connection between conventional asset management and the emerging cryptocurrency sector. CoinShares subsequently developed as the successor and principal operating brand of this digital-asset business. The group expanded its position in European crypto markets through the 2016 acquisition of XBT Provider, a Swedish issuer that had launched a Bitcoin exchange-traded security on Nasdaq Stockholm in 2015. This transaction gave CoinShares access to an established exchange-traded-product platform and became the foundation for a broader range of cryptocurrency investment instruments. The company later added products linked to Ether and other digital assets, physically backed structures, thematic baskets, staking-related products, and blockchain-equity indices. CoinShares also invested in institutional infrastructure. In 2018, it partnered with Japanese bank Nomura and hardware-wallet manufacturer Ledger to establish Komainu, a custody provider designed for professional digital-asset clients. The company continued to develop services around market making, liquidity provision, venture investing, and digital-asset capital markets. During 2020, it recruited senior personnel with conventional exchange-traded-fund experience as it sought to scale its crypto investment-product platform. CoinShares became a public company in March 2021, when its shares began trading on Nasdaq First North Growth Market in Stockholm. It later moved to Nasdaq Stockholm’s main market in December 2022. The company’s development during this period coincided with both rapid growth in digital-asset markets and significant market risk. The collapse of Terra and Luna in May 2022 and the failure of FTX in November 2022 contributed to losses and instability across the cryptocurrency industry. CoinShares responded by withdrawing from retail-oriented services, including its crypto trading application, and focusing more closely on institutional and professional clients. In 2023, CoinShares created a hedge-fund division offering active crypto strategies to US investors. These included approaches involving Bitcoin and Ether, as well as arbitrage and options strategies. In March 2024, the company acquired Valkyrie Investments, which was subsequently associated with the CoinShares Valkyrie brand. The transaction accelerated CoinShares’ entry into the US investment-product market. The group’s European regulatory footprint expanded in July 2025 when CoinShares Asset Management in France received authorization from the AMF under the EU MiCA regime. The authorization was intended to facilitate crypto investment products and portfolio-management services across the European Union. In September 2025, CoinShares announced a proposed New York listing through a transaction with Vine Hill Capital. Together, these developments reflect the group’s broader strategy of combining European exchange-traded-product expertise with institutional asset management, regulated distribution, and a stronger US presence.
