History
Cloudflare was founded on July 26, 2009, by Matthew Prince, Lee Holloway, and Michelle Zatlyn. Prince and Holloway had previously worked on Project Honey Pot, which gathered information about malicious internet activity. That experience helped shape Cloudflare’s initial concept: a cloud-based layer that could identify hostile traffic, protect websites, and improve delivery without requiring each customer to operate specialized security hardware. The company’s early service combined reverse-proxy networking, caching, DNS, analytics, and DDoS defense. This model placed Cloudflare between visitors and customer origins.
