Overview

China Southern Airlines Co., Ltd., branded as China Southern, is one of China's three major airline groups alongside Air China and China Eastern Airlines. The airline was established on 1 July 1988 during the restructuring of China's Civil Aviation Administration, when regional CAAC operating units were reorganized into separate commercial carriers. It emerged from the former Guangzhou Regional Administration and began operating under its own name and livery in 1991. The company completed its separation from direct CAAC administration in 1993. Guangzhou is the airline's principal base and corporate headquarters. Its major operating hubs and focus airports include Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport and Beijing Daxing International Airport. The carrier serves a broad domestic network connecting China's principal commercial, industrial and regional centers, while its international operations link China with destinations across Asia, Europe, North America, Australia and other markets. China Southern also operates cargo services under the China Southern Cargo name. The airline expanded substantially during the 1990s and early 2000s as China's aviation market became more commercialized. It introduced long-haul services to Europe, North America and Australia, acquired larger long-range aircraft, and developed maintenance and cargo capabilities. Industry consolidation in the early 2000s brought Zhongyuan Airlines, China Northern Airlines and Xinjiang Airlines into the wider China Southern group, strengthening its positions in central, northeastern and northwestern China. The group also developed important relationships with Xiamen Airlines, Chongqing Airlines and Sichuan Airlines. Fleet development has been central to the brand's growth. China Southern became the first mainland Chinese airline to commit to the Airbus A380 and was also an early major operator of Airbus A330 wide-body aircraft and Boeing 777 equipment. Its fleet combines narrow-body aircraft for high-frequency domestic and regional services with wide-body aircraft for long-haul passenger and cargo operations. The airline's blue tail and kapok-flower emblem are associated with Guangzhou, whose city flower is the kapok. China Southern joined the SkyTeam alliance in November 2007 and later participated in SkyTeam Cargo. It left SkyTeam on 1 January 2019 as part of a revised alliance and partnership strategy, while beginning a frequent-flyer and commercial partnership with American Airlines in March 2019. The airline continues to operate as a large, state-linked full-service carrier with passenger, cargo, loyalty, aircraft-maintenance and related aviation activities. Its core positioning is scale, network breadth and connectivity between China's domestic market and international destinations.

History

China Southern Airlines was created on 1 July 1988 during the Chinese government's program to decentralize and commercialize the Civil Aviation Administration of China. The new airline grew out of the Guangzhou regional CAAC organization. Although the company was established in 1988, its first commercial operations under its own branding began in February 1991, and it became operationally independent from CAAC administration on 10 October 1993. In its early period, China Southern concentrated on domestic services and became one of the country's dominant regional carriers. During the mid-1990s it began preparing for international growth by improving staff training, maintenance practices and operating standards through cooperation with overseas aviation companies. The arrival of Boeing 777 aircraft supported the introduction of long-haul services. A Guangzhou–Beijing–Amsterdam route began in November 1996, followed by services to Los Angeles and Brisbane. Airbus aircraft were added during the same period, broadening fleet flexibility. The airline listed in Hong Kong and New York in July 1997 and later listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange in 2003. Its expansion accelerated as the Chinese airline sector consolidated. In 2000, the CAAC organized major carriers into three large groups centered on Air China, China Eastern and China Southern. China Southern absorbed Zhongyuan Airlines and subsequently consolidated China Northern Airlines and Xinjiang Airlines into the China Southern Air Holding structure. The process was completed in 2004 and expanded the group's presence in central China, the northeast and Xinjiang. Cargo became an important additional business. China Southern began dedicated cargo operations from Shenzhen in 2000, initially using leased Boeing 747 freighters, and later ordered its own 747-400 freighters. The company also enlarged its wide-body passenger fleet. It became the first mainland Chinese operator of the Airbus A330 and committed in 2005 to five Airbus A380 aircraft. Boeing 787, Boeing 777 freighter, Airbus A320-family and additional A330 orders supported a broad fleet modernization program. The airline participated in the opening of direct cross-Strait charter services in 2005 and operated a Guangzhou–Taipei flight that year. Regular direct commercial flights followed after cross-Strait aviation restrictions were eased, making China Southern an early participant in the development of this market. After negotiations that began in 2004, China Southern signed a SkyTeam accession agreement in 2006 and officially joined the alliance on 15 November 2007. Its cargo arm entered SkyTeam Cargo in 2010, and group affiliate Xiamen Airlines joined the passenger alliance in 2012. In the late 2000s the carrier shifted from a primarily point-to-point model toward a hub-and-spoke system, particularly around Guangzhou, while increasing its international presence in Australia and other overseas markets. China Southern ended its SkyTeam membership on 1 January 2019. In March of the same year it began a frequent-flyer partnership with American Airlines. The airline remains a major state-linked Chinese carrier, combining a large domestic network with international passenger services, cargo operations and related aviation businesses.
