Overview
China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) is China's largest nuclear power enterprise and the world's third largest. The group focuses on nuclear power as its main business, while also developing wind, solar and other clean energy. Its business covers the entire nuclear power industry chain from R&D, design, construction to operation. CGN operates multiple nuclear power bases and actively expands overseas markets.
History
China General Nuclear Power Group traces its origins to China's reform-and-opening period and the early development of the country's civil nuclear power industry. Its core company, China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group Co., Ltd., was formally registered in September 1994. The group grew around the Daya Bay nuclear power project in Guangdong, which became the anchor of its nuclear generation business and the base for later stations such as Ling'ao Phase I and Phase II. Over the following decades CGN expanded from a Guangdong-focused nuclear operator into a national extra-large enterprise group. Its nuclear generation footprint grew to include Liaoning Hongyanhe, Fujian Ningde, Guangdong Yangjiang, Guangdong Taishan Phase I, Guangxi Fangchenggang, Guangdong Lufeng and Guangdong Huizhou. In April 2013 the group was renamed from China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group to China General Nuclear Power Group, and the core company was renamed China General Nuclear Power Group Co., Ltd., reflecting a broader national and international scope beyond its original Guangdong base. Alongside nuclear generation, CGN built out nuclear fuel capabilities with domestic projects such as Xinjiang and overseas ventures in Kazakhstan, Australia and Canada. It also developed new-energy operations in wind and solar power, non-power nuclear technology applications, digital technology, technology-oriented environmental protection, and industrial finance and integrated services. The group describes this diversified structure as a "6+1" industrial system. CGN's safety and operating record has been a recurring theme in its public communications. In March 2020 the group announced that Ling'ao Nuclear Power Station Unit 1 had reached 5,000 consecutive days of safe operation, which it described as a world record for comparable units. In June 2021 Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Station Unit 5 reached criticality for the first time. The group has also highlighted recognition such as a Grade A rating in SASAC's 2019 operating performance assessment and engineering awards for projects including the Dalad photovoltaic leader project No. 3. By the mid-2020s CGN had become one of China's largest clean-energy groups. According to its own profile, as of August 2026 it had roughly 115 million kilowatts of clean-energy capacity in operation, including 31 nuclear units in operation and 19 under construction with total nuclear installed capacity of 58.494 million kilowatts. Domestic new-energy controlled capacity in operation exceeded 70 million kilowatts, and overseas new-energy controlled capacity in operation and under construction exceeded 13 million kilowatts. Its clean-energy projects covered all 31 provincial-level regions of China and 18 overseas countries, and the group held two mainland listed platforms and three Hong Kong listed platforms.
