Overview
Centenary Bank, formally Centenary Rural Development Bank Limited, is a commercial banking institution headquartered in Kampala, Uganda. It is licensed by the Bank of Uganda, Uganda's central bank and banking regulator, and is one of the country's best-known indigenous financial institutions. The bank developed from a faith-linked and development-oriented financial initiative into a full-service commercial bank while retaining a substantial emphasis on customers who have historically had limited access to formal banking. The institution began in 1983 as Centenary Rural Development Trust, a credit trust established by Simeon Lutaakome, Hugh Francis Pulle, Paul Kateregga, Vincent Kirabo kya Maria, Emmanuel Mpande, and John Ogutu. The trust started offering financial services to the public in 1985. In 1993, it received a commercial banking licence from the Bank of Uganda and became Centenary Rural Development Bank. This transition marked the beginning of its development as a regulated deposit-taking and lending institution. Centenary's core market has traditionally included rural households, farmers, agricultural processors, small traders, small manufacturers, importers, exporters, and other micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises. Although it provides ordinary commercial banking services, its identity has been closely associated with microfinance and development finance. Its lending model has sought to serve individuals and businesses with modest incomes or limited collateral, including customers outside Uganda's largest urban centres. This orientation has helped distinguish the bank from institutions focused primarily on corporate, government, or high-income customers. The bank expanded its physical and digital infrastructure over time. Its Kampala headquarters is located at Mapeera House on Kampala Road, opposite City Square. By the late 2010s, it had established a broad branch and automated-teller network across Uganda's central, western, northern, and eastern regions. It also invested in technology and payments. In 2017, it moved to a new core banking platform developed by Intrasoft International and entered a Mastercard partnership intended to support mobile banking and related payment services. A later partnership with WorldRemit enabled transfers into Centenary accounts through that remittance service. In 2020, the bank introduced instant paperless account opening aimed particularly at people who remained outside conventional banking channels. Centenary has also developed premium and mass-market offerings. Its product range includes deposit accounts, savings products, personal and business lending, agricultural finance, payments, cards, remittances, digital banking, and services for small enterprises. In 2021, it introduced the Cente Platinum Mastercard for premium customers. At the same time, its public positioning continued to combine commercial banking with financial inclusion and development objectives. The institution is part of the Centenary Group, which also includes Centenary Technology Services, known as Cente-Tech, and the Centenary Foundation. The group has extended its banking presence beyond Uganda. In 2023, Centenary Rural Development Bank acquired MyBucks Bank Malawi, which subsequently operated as Centenary Bank Malawi. This expansion gave the group a second national banking operation while preserving Uganda as the brand's historical and principal base. Centenary Bank remains active as a privately owned financial institution. Its significance lies not only in its size within Uganda's banking sector but also in its role as a locally rooted bank serving rural communities, agricultural value chains, microfinance customers, and smaller businesses alongside conventional commercial banking clients.
History
Centenary Bank originated in Uganda's development-finance and credit-trust movement. In 1983, Simeon Lutaakome, Hugh Francis Pulle, Paul Kateregga, Vincent Kirabo kya Maria, Emmanuel Mpande, and John Ogutu established Centenary Rural Development Trust. The organisation was created to extend credit and financial services to people and communities that were not well served by conventional banking. It began providing financial services to the public in 1985. The trust's activities were subsequently formalised and expanded. In 1993, the institution obtained a commercial banking licence from the Bank of Uganda and became Centenary Rural Development Bank Limited. The change gave it the regulatory status and operating scope of a commercial bank while preserving its development-oriented mission. The bank's principal markets included rural households, farmers, agricultural processors, small traders, small manufacturers, and other micro-, small-, and medium-sized businesses. Microfinance and small-scale lending remained central to its public identity, even as it added broader retail, corporate, trade, and payment services. During the 2000s, Centenary continued building its Ugandan branch network and institutional capacity. John Giles served as managing director from 2006 until leaving the position in 2009. Fabian Kasi later became managing director. By the middle of the 2010s, Centenary was described as the largest majority-indigenous Ugandan commercial bank, reflecting the growth of a locally controlled institution within a banking market that also included foreign-owned and international groups. Technology became an increasingly important part of the bank's development. In 2011, Centenary worked with the World Bank Group on a program intended to improve lending to Uganda's agricultural sector. In 2017, it moved to a new core banking platform developed by Intrasoft International. The same year, it signed a Mastercard partnership aimed at developing mobile banking and related payment solutions. It also partnered with WorldRemit in December 2017, allowing customers to receive transfers originating through that remittance network. The bank continued to combine physical distribution with digital access. Its headquarters was established at Mapeera House on Kampala Road in Kampala, and its branch and ATM network expanded across Uganda's central, western, northern, and eastern regions. In May 2020, Centenary launched instant paperless accounts, a service intended to reduce barriers to account opening and reach people who were unbanked or underserved by traditional processes. In December 2021, it introduced the Cente Platinum Mastercard for premium customers, extending its card proposition beyond basic payment services. Centenary Bank operates within the wider Centenary Group. The group includes Centenary Technology Services, or Cente-Tech, which handles information and communications technology functions, and the Centenary Foundation, which supports social programs. The group's regional expansion took a major step in March 2023 when Centenary Rural Development Bank acquired MyBucks Bank Malawi. The acquired business became Centenary Bank Malawi, giving the group a banking presence in Malawi in addition to its established Ugandan operation. The bank's history is therefore defined by a progression from a rural-development credit trust to a regulated commercial bank with national reach and regional ambitions. Its continuing differentiation is the combination of mainstream banking infrastructure with a strong emphasis on agricultural finance, microfinance, financial inclusion, and smaller businesses.
