Overview
CBS Reality was an international factual and reality television channel that operated primarily across Europe and selected markets in Africa, the Middle East and elsewhere. The service originated as Reality TV, a joint venture associated with UPCtv and Zone Vision. It began broadcasting under the Reality TV name in 1999, with its first listed platform launch in Poland following in March 2000, and subsequently expanded to other territories, including Africa in 2001. In 2006, the channel became part of a wider rationalisation of the Zone Vision portfolio and was renamed Zone Reality. The Zone branding connected it with a group of thematic channels distributed across European pay-television platforms. Its programming mix centred on factual entertainment and unscripted formats, including police, custody and courtroom series, documentary-style investigations, real-life emergency and enforcement stories, and imported American programming. Titles associated with the schedule included Bait Car, Jail, Judge Judy and 48 Hours, alongside other factual and true-crime content. The brand entered a new ownership and distribution phase after Liberty Global acquired Zone Vision in 2005 and later sold Chellomedia to AMC Networks in 2014. In August 2012, Chellomedia announced that the European Zone Reality service would adopt the CBS Reality name; the European rebrand took place on 3 December 2012. The CBS identity was used as part of a broader partnership and branding arrangement involving AMC Networks International and Paramount Networks EMEAA. The channel was also distributed in different technical and editorial configurations. Poland received an HD version from September 2019, while a dedicated Romanian feed launched in May 2022 with its own schedule and Romanian advertising. During the 2020s, the service underwent substantial geographic contraction. It ceased broadcasting in Russia in June 2022 and Portugal in July 2022. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, the service ended under the CBS Reality name on 22 November 2023 and was replaced by True Crime. Other European closures followed, including the Czech Republic, Slovakia and the Netherlands at the end of 2023, and Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia, the CIS and the Baltic states in early 2024. By the end of 2025, the channel had also withdrawn from Poland, Romania, the Middle East and Africa, alongside the closure of the related Film Cafe service in those markets. CBS Reality therefore became a discontinued television brand rather than a continuing international channel; reference material states that worldwide broadcasting ceased on 1 January 2026.
History
CBS Reality developed from a European factual television service originally known as Reality TV. The channel was established in 1999 as a joint venture involving UPCtv and Zone Vision. Its first identified broadcast launch took place in Poland on 17 March 2000 through the Wizja TV satellite platform, which was associated with UPC. The service subsequently expanded to Africa in November 2001 and operated as a multi-market pay-television channel rather than as a single national broadcaster. A major structural change came in 2005, when Liberty Global, the owner of UPC, acquired Zone Vision. In 2006, the owners consolidated their thematic channels under the Zone brand, and Reality TV became Zone Reality. The renamed service retained its focus on unscripted factual programming and reality-based storytelling, with schedules built around law enforcement, crime, courts, investigations and other real-life subjects. It also carried imported programming from American factual and reality networks, including programmes such as Bait Car, Jail, Judge Judy and 48 Hours. Chellomedia announced in August 2012 that the European Zone Reality channel would be rebranded CBS Reality. The change took effect on 3 December 2012. The CBS Reality identity formed part of a wider international channel arrangement connected with AMC Networks International and Paramount Networks EMEAA. In February 2014, AMC Networks acquired Chellomedia, and Chellomedia was subsequently rebranded as AMC Networks International. This placed CBS Reality within AMC's international portfolio while preserving its distribution across third-party pay-TV platforms. The service continued to adapt its feeds and technical distribution. Poland received an HD version from 23 September 2019. A dedicated Romanian feed launched on 13 May 2022, carrying a different schedule and Romanian advertising, although promotional material and trailers were subtitled in Romanian. These localised versions demonstrated the channel's reliance on territory-specific distribution arrangements rather than a uniform global feed. The channel's later history was defined by withdrawal and rationalisation. CBS Reality closed in Russia on 1 June 2022 and in Portugal on 1 July 2022. The United Kingdom and Ireland service closed on 22 November 2023 and was renamed True Crime under the same ownership. The channel then disappeared from the Czech Republic, Slovakia and the Netherlands by 31 December 2023, followed by closures in Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia, the CIS and the Baltic markets on 3 January 2024. The remaining services in Poland, Romania, the Middle East and Africa ended on 31 December 2025. Reference material records a final worldwide cessation on 1 January 2026. CBS Reality's lifecycle consequently ran from a pan-European reality-TV proposition to a specialised true-crime and factual brand, and finally to a discontinued channel whose principal UK and Irish successor branding was True Crime.
