Overview
Cathay United Bank is a Taiwan-based commercial bank and one of the principal banking businesses within Cathay Financial Holdings. Its domestic franchise was built around a nationwide branch network and a broad range of retail, corporate, wealth-management and financial-market services. The bank operates under the Cathay United name in Taiwan and through overseas branches, representative offices, subsidiaries and joint ventures across Asia. The institution originated as United World Chinese Commercial Bank, commonly abbreviated as UWCCB, which was established in 1975. Its early history included a major bank robbery in December 1982, when NT$14 million was stolen. At the time, the incident was described as the largest bank robbery in Taiwan. The event remains one of the notable episodes associated with the bank's predecessor, although it did not define the institution's later business strategy. A major transformation occurred in 2003, when United World Chinese Commercial Bank merged with Cathay Commercial Bank, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cathay Financial Holding Company. The surviving legal entity was renamed Cathay United Bank, combining the UWCCB platform with the Cathay financial group identity. The merger established the current brand and positioned the bank as a core banking arm of the wider Cathay financial-services group. Cathay United Bank's domestic activities include personal deposits, lending, payment and card services, mortgages, consumer finance, commercial lending, cash management, trade finance, foreign exchange, investment products and wealth management. Its corporate franchise serves companies ranging from small and medium-sized enterprises to larger domestic and cross-border businesses. The bank also participates in financial-market activities, including foreign-exchange and money-market operations, particularly through its Singapore platform. International expansion has been concentrated in Greater China and Southeast Asia. The bank acquired a majority stake in Singapore Banking Corporation in Cambodia in 2012 and agreed to purchase the remaining shares in 2013; the Cambodian operation was renamed Cathay United Bank Cambodia in 2014. The Cambodian business gives the group a local commercial-banking presence with branches and offices in Phnom Penh and other cities. Cathay United Bank also maintains or has maintained overseas branches and representative offices in markets including China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand. Vietnam has been an especially significant market. In 1990, Cathay United Bank and Vietinbank established Indovina Bank, a Vietnamese joint-venture commercial bank. This made Cathay United Bank an early Taiwanese banking entrant into Vietnam. The joint venture is headquartered in Ho Chi Minh City and has operated through branches and transaction offices. The bank's regional strategy has also included investments and proposed acquisitions involving financial institutions in the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia. These initiatives have generally been pursued with Cathay Financial Holdings affiliates, particularly Cathay Life Insurance, and reflect an effort to build a broader Asian financial network rather than operate solely as a Taiwan-focused lender. The group remains anchored in Taiwan, while its international network supports cross-border corporate banking, trade, remittances, foreign exchange and regional investment activity. Cathay United Bank is not separately represented by the 2882.TW stock ticker; that ticker is associated with Cathay Financial Holdings, its listed parent. The bank's present identity is therefore best understood as a major operating subsidiary and banking brand within a diversified financial-services group.
History
Cathay United Bank traces its origins to United World Chinese Commercial Bank, established in Taiwan in 1975. The predecessor institution operated as a commercial bank serving domestic customers and businesses. In December 1982, it became the target of a major bank robbery in which NT$14 million was stolen. The incident was reported as the largest Taiwanese bank robbery at that time and is the principal historical scandal associated with the bank's predecessor. The bank's modern identity emerged from the 2003 merger between United World Chinese Commercial Bank and Cathay Commercial Bank. Cathay Commercial Bank was a wholly owned subsidiary of Cathay Financial Holding Company. Although UWCCB remained the surviving legal entity, the combined institution was renamed Cathay United Bank. This transaction integrated the predecessor bank into the Cathay financial group and created the brand used today. Following the merger, Cathay United Bank developed a full-service domestic banking model. Its activities include personal deposits and loans, mortgages, cards and payment services, corporate and commercial credit, trade finance, cash management, foreign exchange, investment products and wealth management. Taiwan remains the bank's core market, supported by a large branch network and broad customer base. The bank subsequently pursued regional expansion, particularly in Southeast Asia. In 2012 it acquired a 70 percent stake in Singapore Banking Corporation in Cambodia, with approval from Cambodia's National Bank. In 2013 it agreed to acquire the remaining shares, and in 2014 the Cambodian operation adopted the Cathay United Bank Cambodia name. The Cambodian network has included branches and offices in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, Kampong Cham, Bavet and Battambang. Cathay United Bank also expanded through the Cathay group's investments in other Asian financial institutions. In 2014, Cathay United Bank and Cathay Life Insurance acquired a stake in the Philippines' Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation. The transaction later attracted attention because RCBC was connected to the Bangladesh Bank cyber-heist; RCBC's president resigned in 2016. The available reference material does not identify Cathay United Bank as the perpetrator of that incident. In Indonesia, Cathay Life announced in 2015 a plan to acquire a substantial stake in Bank Mayapada. In Malaysia, Cathay United Bank and Cathay Life agreed in 2017 to purchase Bank of Nova Scotia Berhad Malaysia, subject to regulatory approval. These initiatives illustrate the group's approach of combining banking and insurance resources when entering or expanding in overseas markets. Vietnam has been another long-standing regional market. Cathay United Bank and Vietinbank established Indovina Bank in 1990. The joint venture was an early Taiwanese banking presence in Vietnam and developed a commercial-banking network headquartered in Ho Chi Minh City. Cathay United Bank has also operated branches, sub-branches and representative offices in mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand. A mainland China subsidiary formally opened in 2018. The bank's overseas network supports cross-border corporate clients, trade flows, foreign exchange, regional liquidity and investment activity. Its Hong Kong and Shanghai operations focus heavily on Greater China, while Singapore has been described as active in regional foreign-exchange and money markets and in investment-grade Southeast Asian credit. Through this combination of domestic scale and Asian reach, Cathay United Bank functions as the principal commercial-banking brand of Cathay Financial Holdings.
