Carnival Sunshine

Carnival Sunshine is a cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line and owned within the Carnival Corporation & plc group. The vessel entered service in 1996 as Carnival Destiny, representing a major step in the growth of contemporary mass-market cruising. Built by Fincantieri at its Monfalcone shipyard in northern Italy, the ship was the first passenger vessel constructed with a gross tonnage exceeding 100,000. At the time of its debut, it was the largest passenger ship ever built, surpassing a record that had been held by Queen Elizabeth for more than five decades. The ship was christened in Venice in November 1996 by Lin Arison, wife of Carnival Cruise Line founder Ted Arison. Carnival Destiny was designed as a large, resort-like cruise platform rather than simply a means of transportation. Its onboard offer has included swimming pools, multiple dining venues, lounges, nightclubs, a casino, a spa, and entertainment spaces. A major refurbishment in 2005 expanded and updated public areas, while further work in 2010 addressed a propulsion problem and introduced or renovated features including a Lido Deck movie screen and guest cabins. These changes helped extend the useful life of the ship as newer and larger vessels entered the market. Carnival announced a much more extensive transformation on 6 March 2012. The approximately US$155 million project was intended to modernize the ship substantially and rename it Carnival Sunshine. The work took place in dry dock in Trieste, Italy, during 2013. It included the addition of Carnival-branded entertainment, dining and leisure features, cabin improvements, and a racing-themed water park with one of the larger slides in the company's fleet. Installation of replacement backup generator systems delayed completion by about a month. The renovated ship was relaunched on 5 May 2013 and formally renamed Carnival Sunshine at a New Orleans ceremony on 17 November 2013, with Lin Arison again serving as godmother. After the conversion, Carnival Sunshine continued to serve the North American cruise market, primarily operating from United States ports and visiting destinations in the Caribbean and the Bahamas. It sailed seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries from New Orleans until April 2014, then moved to Port Canaveral, Florida, where it offered voyages ranging from five to nine nights. During the summers of 2016 and 2017, the ship operated from a rotating set of northeastern and southeastern homeports, including New York, Charleston and Norfolk. These programs combined shorter Bermuda cruises with six- to eight-night Eastern Caribbean itineraries. From May 2019 through January 2025, Charleston, South Carolina, served as the ship's full-time homeport. Its schedule there concentrated on four- and five-night Bahamas cruises, including calls at Nassau, Freeport, Half Moon Cay and Princess Cays, while occasional longer trips reached the Eastern Caribbean. Carnival had previously planned Charleston itineraries to Cuba, but those plans were abandoned after changes to United States policy restricted cruise travel to Cuba. In February 2025, Carnival Sunshine moved to Norfolk, Virginia, for year-round operations. The new deployment offers six- to nine-day cruises to the Bahamas and Eastern Caribbean and represented the first year-round homeporting of a cruise ship from the Port of Norfolk. The vessel remains an active example of Carnival's strategy of redeploying mature ships among regional American ports while maintaining a broad, accessible vacation proposition.

Carnival Sunshine began life as Carnival Destiny, a Fincantieri-built cruise ship constructed at Monfalcone in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy. The ship was completed for Carnival Cruise Line and entered service in 1996. Its introduction was historically significant because it was the first passenger ship to exceed 100,000 gross tons. It also became the largest passenger vessel in the world at the time, taking the record from Queen Elizabeth after more than fifty years. Lin Arison, wife of Carnival founder Ted Arison, christened the ship in Venice in November 1996. The original Carnival Destiny embodied Carnival's large-scale, entertainment-focused approach to cruising. Its facilities included several pools, restaurants and other food outlets, lounges, nightclubs, a casino, a spa and other leisure spaces. A significant 2005 refurbishment updated the vessel after years of operation. In 2010, it entered dry dock for work associated with a propulsion problem; that period also brought cabin renovations and the addition of a movie screen on the Lido Deck. On 6 March 2012, Carnival announced a comprehensive modernization program costing approximately US$155 million. The project was intended to give the aging ship a new product identity rather than merely perform routine maintenance. During 2013, Carnival Destiny entered dry dock in Trieste for the conversion. The program added and refreshed dining, entertainment and recreational facilities, including a racing-themed water park and a large waterslide. The installation of new backup generator systems extended the work and delayed the planned completion by roughly one month. The ship was relaunched on 5 May 2013 under its new name, Carnival Sunshine. Its formal renaming took place in New Orleans on 17 November 2013, again with Lin Arison as godmother. Following the conversion, the ship's itineraries remained centered on United States homeports and Caribbean-region destinations. It operated seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean voyages from New Orleans until April 2014, then moved to Port Canaveral, Florida, for five- to nine-night Eastern, Western and Southern Caribbean cruises. During the summers of 2016 and 2017, it alternated among New York, Charleston and Norfolk. Those deployments included four- and five-night Bermuda trips alongside longer Eastern Caribbean cruises. Charleston became Carnival Sunshine's permanent homeport from May 2019 until January 2025. The ship primarily offered short Bahamas voyages, with destinations such as Nassau, Freeport, Half Moon Cay and Princess Cays, while also making occasional six- to eight-night Eastern Caribbean trips. A proposed Cuba program from Charleston did not proceed after United States restrictions on cruise travel to Cuba changed. In March 2022, Carnival Sunshine participated in a company fleet gathering associated with Carnival's fiftieth anniversary. In February 2025, the ship moved to Norfolk, Virginia, where it began a year-round program of six- to nine-day cruises to the Bahamas and Eastern Caribbean. This deployment was described as the first time a ship had been homeported year-round from the Port of Norfolk. The vessel also experienced a serious storm event in May 2023, with flooding affecting crew accommodation areas and damage to the crew bar. Despite its age relative to newer Carnival ships, Carnival Sunshine remains active because its large capacity, broad onboard facilities and flexible United States port deployment allow it to serve the company's mainstream cruise market.
