Overview
Carnival Fantasy was a cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line and the lead vessel of the Fantasy class. Constructed by Kværner Masa-Yards at its Helsinki New Shipyard in Finland, the ship represented an important stage in Carnival's development of large, purpose-built vessels aimed at the contemporary mass-market cruise segment. It was floated out on December 9, 1988, completed on January 27, 1990, and formally named Fantasy on March 1, 1990. Tellervo Koivisto, wife of Finland's then president Mauno Koivisto, served as the ship's ceremonial godmother. The vessel entered passenger service in 1990 and later became known as Carnival Fantasy after Carnival added the company name as a prefix to its Fantasy-class ships in 2007. The ship initially operated from the Port of Miami, serving destinations in the Caribbean. In 1995 it moved to Port Canaveral, continuing to support Carnival's Florida-based cruise network. Following Hurricane Katrina, Carnival Fantasy became the first Carnival ship to return to Louisiana in the fall of 2006. New Orleans subsequently served as an important home port for the vessel, including cruises to Mexico. The ship's deployment changed several times over its career. Carnival announced in September 2009 that it would base the vessel in Mobile, Alabama; it was later relocated to Charleston, South Carolina, before returning to Mobile in November 2016. Carnival Fantasy underwent several significant maintenance and enhancement periods. A drydock refit in the fall of 2008 updated shipboard facilities. A February 2016 refurbishment added exhaust-gas cleaning equipment and modified selected restaurants and childcare areas. Another refit took place in January 2019. In April 2019, the vessel assisted the United States Coast Guard during the rescue of 23 people at sea, an event that illustrated its continued operation as an active ocean-going passenger ship late in its career. The ship was also affected by the COVID-19 crisis. Carnival suspended operations across its fleet on March 14, 2020, and later extended the planned resumption date from April 10 to October 1. In July 2020, Carnival Corporation confirmed the sale of Carnival Fantasy for scrap, together with Carnival Inspiration. The ship left Miami for Aliaga, Turkey, on July 15, 2020, and was beached there for dismantling on July 29. Scrapping had begun by August 2020 and was completed in September 2021. Carnival Fantasy therefore remains historically significant as the first and namesake vessel of a large Carnival class, but it is no longer an operating cruise product.
History
Carnival Fantasy was ordered and built as the first vessel in Carnival Cruise Line's Fantasy class, a series that became one of the largest cruise-ship classes by number of ships. Kværner Masa-Yards constructed the vessel at its Helsinki New Shipyard in Finland. The ship was floated out on December 9, 1988, completed on January 27, 1990, and formally named Fantasy on March 1, 1990. The naming ceremony was conducted by Tellervo Koivisto, wife of Mauno Koivisto, who was then president of Finland. The ship entered service later in 1990, establishing the basic design and operating pattern that would be associated with the Fantasy class. Fantasy began its career sailing from the Port of Miami on Caribbean itineraries. In 1995, Carnival moved the vessel to Port Canaveral, another major Florida cruise gateway. The ship later became part of Carnival's response to the disruption caused by Hurricane Katrina. In the fall of 2006, it was the first Carnival vessel to return to Louisiana after the hurricane, operating from New Orleans on cruises to Mexico. Carnival subsequently announced in September 2009 that the ship would be based in Mobile, Alabama. It was later deployed from Charleston, South Carolina, before returning to Mobile in November 2016. The ship received repeated technical and hotel-area updates. It spent approximately a month in drydock during the fall of 2008. In February 2016, Carnival installed diesel-engine exhaust scrubbers and changed selected restaurant and childcare spaces. A further refit occurred in January 2019. In April of that year, Carnival Fantasy supported the United States Coast Guard in rescuing 23 people at sea. The vessel's final period of service coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic. Carnival suspended its entire fleet on March 14, 2020. Although an April 10 restart had previously been contemplated, the suspension was later extended to October 1. In July, Carnival confirmed that Carnival Fantasy had been sold for scrap. The ship left Miami for Aliaga, Turkey, on July 15 and was beached there on July 29. Reports indicated that dismantling had begun by August 26, 2020. Scrapping was completed in September 2021. Carnival Fantasy's career thus covered three decades, multiple United States home ports, several refurbishment cycles, and the rise and retirement of one of Carnival's most extensive ship classes.
